A double-acting cylinder is a cylinder in which the working fluid acts alternately on both sides of the piston. In order to connect the piston in a double-acting cylinder to an external mechanism, such as a crank shaft, a hole must be provided in one end of the cylinder for the piston rod, and this is fitted with a gland or "stuffing box" to prevent escape of the working fluid. Double-acting cylinders are common in steam engines but unusual in other engine types.

Fun fact, in electronics terms, this is called a bridge rectifier.
@gooddealonly
@gooddealonly 3 жыл бұрын
The AC power a SOURCE that supplies a continuous reversing polarity current. The bridge rectifier "redirects" each direction of the polarity to the same output of either positive or negative. The bridge rectifier redirects and does not move the current The pump is working with a static pool of liquid. There is no flowing of the liquid and therefore no direction change to rectify anything. The cranking mechanism, however, changes the rotating motion to a reciprocal linear motion of the piston. The liquid was moved by being sucked into the cylinder by the linear motion of the piston-like plate. The double-action makes the pumping more efficient. The comparison to the bridge rectifier with this double action pump is NOT similar.

I just imagined having to calculate a couple of those in parallel with a phase shift applied to them in the hydraulic exams at my UAS, luckily this was not done but the preasure spikes and phase shift would make that task into a nice bonus points head scratcher, especially under a time limit and exam stress. Not to mention all the technical questions one could ask around that setup.

@@AnkleBiter3854 I work in a factory where we make large double acting piston pumps with two cylinders. Pressure is up to 120 meters and flow 300+ cubic meters or hour. They are made with a crankshaft mounted through a large gear wheel, with a piston on each side of the gear wheel. If the two pistons work completely opposite of each other ( one going up and the other going down simultaneously), the shift in pressure when the pistons change direction, will make a lot of noise and shake the tubes violently. So the crankshaft is made so the pistons has a 90 degree difference instead of 180 degrees. I guess that is what he is trying to be technically about.

@AnkleBiter3854 3 жыл бұрын
@@youghurt2k how is this different compared to any other engine? Does this make it more efficient in fuel? Is it better in the way that it is much faster than a regular engine with the same amount of pistons? If you mean a sprung piston-ball-disc check what you gain in backflow and water hammer prevention plus omni positional installs you lose in pressure drop thus flow rate vs a swing check for two equally line sized valves. I've seen swing checks with and without return springs. Don't play the video upside down with the current checks. Spring loaded swings might still work though ..
@Froggability
@Froggability 2 жыл бұрын
I suggest springs make it worse, reduce the flow, and another part to corrode or fail over time. Back pressure alone does the job

The only problem with this design would be sealing and lubrication. Like if you were to use a mechanical seal or packing on the reciprocating shaft, it would have to be replaced constantly, and would leak pretty easily. Also, oil from the crank would drip onto the piston shaft and likely make its way past the seal, contaminating the water being pumped. or water seeping past the seals would contaminate the oil. Also what's protecting the cylinder and the seals from hydraulic lock? If the outlet check valve fails on the down stroke, or some water gets trapped under the piston. Water being a non compressible fluid will either try and find it's way out by any means (often explosively), or provide so much resistance that it destroys the driver turning the crank.
