England 1-1 Colombia (1988)

England and Colombia play out a 1-1 draw at Wembley in May 1988. In a front of a sparse crowd, the visitors catch the eye with their stylish football and include characters such as Carlos Valderrama and Rene Higuita. Gary Lineker gives England the lead, before the late Andres Escobar equalises to the delight of the travelling fans. England win the Rous Cup (having beaten Scotland three days earlier), but the players receiving a ticking-off from manager Bobby Robson for swapping shirts before the presentation!

Robson has a point and yes Colombia didn't score or get beyond his defence enough. But the way Colombia played should have been a proper education for his guys who, because of their technical inefficiency, were mullered 2 months later in West Germany and have suffered in competitions ever since.

Andrés Escobar, joven defensa que marcó el gol del empate en este partido amistoso, jamás imaginó que 6 años después enlutaría con su muerte al fútbol mundial.
