As a Leeds fan I know from experience in 1970 how good JJ was . Terry Cooper was a great defender for us but he really struggled against JJ in the 70 European Cup semis as well as this game . Also it shows how influential Billy Bremner was as he's always in the camera shot whichever part of the pitch the action is .

Jinky was something else. He along with George Best were the best dribblers in the British Isles (with all due respect to Sir Stanley Matthews). I grew up watching both of them on the 1960s, and they were out of this world. Both of them left us too soon.

An absolute legend! I remember him as a kid when he used to visit his sister in law down in Bothwell Lanarkshire as Jimmy used to be out running down from Viewpark Uddingston. He would stop and play football with all the weans (kids) me included. I’ll never ever forget those days. Some of us wore Rangers shirts but that didn’t make a difference to him as he rose above that narrow minded mind set as he was all about football. My dad was from Viewpark and Jimmy had a cup of tea at ours before going to see Francis. Apparently one of his idols was Garrincha. For me he was one of the best players of all time and up there in terms of ability with the greats. He just didn’t get the recognition that he deserved. Even now with the very popular EA Sports FIFIA Ultimate Team video game he’s not included. In that game that sells millions Globally they have players rated as icons. None of the 1967 Celtic team are included nor indeed the Rangers team who won the European cup winners cup either. As a Rangers fan I can say we were all proud of Jimmy and tbh Celtic too as we are all Scottish and the same culturally identity. If your a true football fan then blue or green should make no difference in your admiration of a great player RIP Jinkie

@@HarmsFootball No problem. Many times we had a kick about with him. With 20 weans trying to get the ball off him and Jimmy dribbling around us with all sorts of skill moves 😊. We even followed him up to Wood Dean football pitches more than half a mile away with him sort of being like a pied piper. Yes the Garrincha influence is there with the quick change in direction. I recall him doing step overs too but curiously he didn’t incorporate that in to his game

There was a documentary on stv a good while back about wee Jimmy and his background in viewpark. It tells of how his primary school headmaster could see a talent in him. It showed the parks that he used to practice his skills on - dribbling around milk bottles with big heavy boots on was another thing he did. His girlfriend ( later wife ) tells how he was non stop football practice. Just to think he was a small lad from a housing estate in Scotland.

Dubin the ball and our boots let in water as no plastic cover so dubbin was rubbed into the ball to keep the water out .. but it lasted for 20 mins then became water sodden and heavy. the balls were called case balls and had laces to cover the inflater thing.. I am talking 1062 Cos I was the one who used to dubbin the balls ready for games, which got you out of a lesson.. by 1971 the balls were much more advanced but still heavier than today's balls

As a scottish man myself we did have some great players but couldn't do it at big tournaments one day I hope things change. Our current squad under Steve Clarke still need a jimmy johnstone and a Kenny Dalglish but also I feel we need a world class central defender or two cos we concede goals at the top level you have to be rock solid. Held on to the ball too long as time and gave the ball away a lot but ran around giving so much. England looked to foul him as the only way to stop him.he had very close control which is difficult to defend against!

Apart from a few nice moments in the first half. He mostly lost the ball, running into brick walls. On a side note: the ball moved like a brick back then. Modern balls move so swiftly with just a tap. Makes for faster moving games.

Yeah, it's far from his best performance - although there are some mitigating circumstances to be fair. He was targeted by English defenders in the first time, they kept kicking him without any mercy, hence his second time performance being not as effective. And Scotland was just horrendous tactically. I've included a couple of episodes from the second time where Johnstone kept making good runs but his teammates either ignored them or failed to pass the ball to him accurately. In the last 30 minutes Scotland reserved to kicking the ball forward in Johnstone's general direction - nice move, considering that he's 1,62m tall and there's Bobby fecking Moore leading England's defense!

A fine wee player from a time when Scottish football meant something on worldwide basis. That said, the only real moment from this clip is at about 2.30, where he twists Terry Cooper’s blood and even makes Sir Bobby get his shorts dirty! An achievement in itself.

Richard diver, that was true. Terry cooper must have hated wee jinky by this time. Sure in 1970 at hampden in the european cup semi-final wee jinky gave terry cooper a right roasting all night, its one if not the best i have seen a winger ever make a left back look so bad as if cooper had never played football before. I can clearly remember cooper trying to kick jinky or make a tackle and cooper completely missesd the player altogether never mind the ball and kicked fresh air and spin around and fell, wich i did too when i was age 9. And when cooper did it we were all howling with laughter it was just so funny. Then jinky went past cooper and lorimer as he cut inside and made cooper and lorimer run into each other hard. But they had to play on they were getting slaughterd out there as it was. Bremners goal was a peach. And so was that very low header by bobby murdoch, that was a great header that one. 139,456 thousand were there that night, and the rest!

Jinky was legendary etc but his light was starting to fade here. 70/71 was a season where he'd excelled at club level. After that he steadily declined and was in the American soccer league four years later. Alcohol problems then Motor neurone disease meant he died just 61 yrs old.
