Hi guys. I have a bit of a theory regarding the shark behaviour, more to add to what you have. If you have a look at where Ascension is, it's a hell of a distance to somewhere else, ie the next food opportunity if you're an ocean shark, which already puts them on hyper alert for a investigating everything possible. Also, the behaviour of both fishermen and the (less informed) personnel on the island regarding disposal of fish entrails and other food waste over the years hasn't been well thought out (the main cutting table on the quay side luring the sharks right into the dinghy landing stage) and has marked humans out for investigation as a possible food source, so the sharks behave very differently to those in some of the isolated reef spots you have dived where there is irregular human contact or visitation. Another great video, & well done to Liz for managing to land the only single bloke in the entire North & South Atlantic :-)

This was my favourite episode in a while. It had great travel experiences with new people and the shark incident and how Brady analyzed it was amazing and insightful. I also love the dynamic of the new crew. Alex seems just totally balanced, mindful, and cool. Liz just seems like a blast! And her musical improv is so good. And Lisa seems like the sweetest thing ever!

I always look forward to your videos. Your visit to Ascension is of particular interest. I spent three years at the former NASA satellite tracking station, at the Devil's Ash Pit. Ascension is also where I learned to scuba. It was a great place to dive, play tennis, drink beer... :) Safe travels!

You are mostly correct about sharks; well done. Sharks do have a good sense of smell but the lateral line is not used for that. They also detect electric fields. Be thankful you only had to deal with one, it is indeed unusual to see such aggression from a single animal! Back in my diving days, we sometimes carried a bang stick for emergencies: never needed to use it, but it gave a sense of security. The scariest part is getting into the boat, when you can't see them.

Great video, a top mix of facts, Brian I love the way you relay the detail, being a Brit Iknew of Ascension but I didn't know it had no civilian runway any more. Team/ Wingmen what a hoot with Lizbef! Really appreciate your stance over the shark situation after so much experience around them and Brady your analysis over its actions in the encounter. The runway is only temporarily closed to heavy aircraft (except emergencies), It's being fully re-surfaced at the moment. It will re-open to heavy traffic in 2022. At that point people will be able to get a flight from Brize Norton in the UK again (then onwards to the Falklands). Currently the Falklands flights do a stopover in Dakar instead.

I’ve been waiting for this video for a long time. Private aircraft can land on the island under special permit. I flew a group of fishermen in there in 2008 and spent 2 weeks in that hotel. It was he coolest trip of my life. No sharks back then though... we dove there and it was amazing. I recognize a lot in your video! Even some of the people are still there!

I love your vids of Ascension And st Helena. I went to school on Ascension Island I lived in two Boats village ,and the only school on Ascension is at the foot of green mountain. I lived there for 6 yrs with my family, when you go to green mountain I recommend you walking through the tunnel near the Administrators house .you will come out on the back side of the mountain, with a great view of The Devils Ash pit .Beware of land crabs pinching your toes. thanks and safe sailing.
