As a retired engineer and science educator, Al boats in salt water is a problem. The metals that can be used as sacrificial anodes is Mg, Zn is fine for steel, bronze because it is higher on the reactivity scale but the only usable metal above Al on the reactivity series is Mg, magnesium. Zinc is lower than Al on the reactivity series.

Brian, a word of caution… I spent my entire career working in sheet metal shops and every day I am paying the price of not wearing hearing protection. Hearing loss is a major drag! Protect your ears! Hammering on those frames and grinding all of those welds is hurting your ears. Hearing loss is permanent. I didn’t give earmuffs and ear plugs the priority that they deserve. Don’t make the mistake that I made. ( I have been following you for many years and motored across Sandy Hook Bay (NJ) just to say hi, once while you were anchored there. I so appreciate your videos). Brian you should look up some of the black magic some of the old timers in automotive restoration can do with an English wheel to match factory curves when making patches for old sheet metal car bodies. Watching them remake panels for old 20s-60s cars is amazing.

Another advantage of aluminum is it makes a great faraday cage. If you ground the mast to the boat properly lightning shouldn’t bother you.

I'm curious why you didn't invert the windows for the bridge area and provide more of an overhang to keep it from heating up that part of the cabin. It seems half the explorer vessels do that and the other half don't. Have you considered rigging it for a camera to get a better view in front of the boat since the mast is center and forward? Are you doing any vibration and sound insulation for the cabins and isolating motor and mechanical noises for the mechanicals directly? Or a separate capture area under the engines so a leak can be identified quickly and not mix with your bilge and have to be traced back? Will you be applying a fairing coating and painting?

I just want to point out that the panel you did the comparison is not the typical laminate of a hull. It would be at least 3mm on outer skin. Also, you can make a sandwich laminate with same puncture resistance as the aluminum one, you just need to size the outer skin adequately. It could maybe be costlier and or heavier but, the low impact resistance is not characteristic of the material Glass fiber but of the construction. As context, I worked at a fiberglass car factory. One of the "tests" we did for costumers was hitting the body with a hammer. There was no dent or mark left, you can be sure that would not be the case with an aluminum or even steel body.

Years ago Tristan Jones made small trinkets to sell to supporters back in the day before the internet. He would engrave the longitude and latitude of his position when he received the request for a medallion. Maybe you could etch an image of Delos with your signatures and the longitude/latitude also. It's just a thought. Safe travels!

boat builders deserve to make a living too. and if it wasn't for them, you wouldn't even have access to the knowledge to do this. And if a boat builder passes this knowledge along to You, and you never pass it along, they wanted their time. It's one thing to want to do it yourself, it's another to suggest that it's a waste of money to support master boat builders... without them, boating disappears

They should make aluminum welders that have built in thermal cameras/sensors that automatically help you control overheating
@sanderdol116 сағат бұрын
I think your "test" between solid aluminium and thin sandwich is intentionally misleading. How thick solid fiberglass is the hull of Delos? Did you check? If you knew it was just a thin sandwich you would not sail it, right?

Aluminum is only 70 gpa while steel 200+ gpa -means still will not bend and is quieter. Steel is best for abusing that's why bmx bicycles for jumping and knife blades are from steel. Chromoly steel has about same strength/weight ratio as aluminum but question is protection... Much more important=we are in last days,repent, believe Christ died to take your sins,obey Him=get Saved. I believe digital money with ID digital will be "mark of the b"(among other marks=mostly spiritual). Good luck !!
