He was easily the best loosehead in world rugby at only 24, and could have been one of the all time greats.. 120kgs, fantastic technique, great around the park, and the most destructive loosehead I've seen since Rodrigo Roncero.. The lions tour in Australia showed just how good he was..

He was by far the strongest forward in the Tigers squad even at 23. Healey's achilles heel was his propping in his early days and had to work extremely hard on it. We would often target him as a weak link in the scrum

He was American anyway, he did get injured but that wasn't what stopped him playing, it was the realisation that he was basically putting his spine on the line every scrum. He's still physically very fit and a big fan of MMA, he just chose the right decision and got out before his spine turned into an accordion. Corbs was absolutely superb. Hopefully the US can persuade more of their legit fit guys to stop playing Fatball and play rugby

Ireland had to put a loosehead in the tighthead spot before the 2nd half. This was when there was only one prop replacement on the bench. Thank god they changed it to 2 because tighthead and loosehead are entirely different positions and very few props can play both.

Tight head and loose head are infinitely different positions, different angles, different body position and far more. It's extremely rare for top level props to be able to play both sides safely, which is one of the reasons the laws were changed so specialists in all 3 positions were on the bench..

Great shame that Alex Corbisiero's career was so badly affected by injury. He was a phenomenal scrummager and the primary reason for this dominating performance from the English front five. And this was the basis of the pack that went on to crush the All Blacks in the Autumn of that year. That pack never played together again due to injuries. Obviously a relief to other nations. Against Wales at the Millennium stadium in 2013 then the scrummaging would have been different. Joe Marler got nailed that day by Adam Jones. Had Corbs been loose head the outcome would have been very different.

How rare is it that the loosehead gets one up on the tighthead? When I played ruggers at school (and I played full-back), the tightheads seemed to have most of the tricks, but I never figured out what sort of tricks the loosehead can pull to destabilise the opposing tighthead? Brilliant scrummaging, akin to what we did against the Aussies in RWC 2007 when Andrew Sheridan monstered the Aussie scrum.

It probably was but it is a very true reflection of the scrums in last year's Eng-Ire game. I can't remember the exact stats but I think Ireland lost 4 or 5 scrums against the head, gave away numerous penalties with a bad technique and were generally steamrollered. Of all the "dead rubbers" this was one of the most impressive by England. Ireland had spent the 2012 championship building on lineout authority and didn't have the bulk at the scrum

Did you see the conditions in this game? The week before England had scored three very good tries against France, but you can't expect that in the rain like this. Against SA we did struggle in the first halves of games, but by the end of the series the pack were performing very well. Given that they're still young on the whole it's pretty promising.

No one would dispute that between 2004-2011 the Irish had a wonderful side, shown by the results of Munster and Leinster in the HC. But I would point out that as bad as England have been since 2003, they've still reached the world cup final and another quarter final. The challenge now for for Ireland is to replace the players who've gone. O'Driscoll, Hayes, O'Callaghan etc that will be a tough job.

I even think a lot of us in Ireland were happy to see England win this one. Last year after Ireland won, in his interviews all he said was that that performance against England was missing from the rest of the championship. We had a disappointing campaign. It was about how poor Ireland were up until then. The infamous knowledge/wisdom quote which was directed at Martin Johnson. Playing is not the same as managing a national team. That was mind games, not arrogance.

This game was in the Six Nations last year - all of the substitutions in the Irish front row were to do with injuries. Mike Ross limps off on the verge of halftime and the youngster (Tom Court if I'm not mistaken) then gets an absolute lesson from Corbisiero. To be fair to Cian Healy he had the upper hand on Cole on Sunday (in the scrums) - but he got smashed in this fixture

Normally just for restarting after a minor offence but when the force is with you it's a great way to knock someone's dick in the dirt. (ex front-rower here, but that was last century...!)

I thought this was very unfair on Tom Court. He was a loosehead and at the time you could only have one replacement prop in your 22. It wasn't his fault if he was a loosehead who was put on to substitute a tighthead, especially not against one of the world's best. His reputation was ruined here but he was actually a very good player when he played at loosehead. This was the match that lead to the change whereby the 22 was turned to 23 and both a replacement loosehead and tighthead were allowed. Seeing the scrum collapse so dangerously every time made the IRB get its act together and make a decision on it.

It’s amazing to see so many comments that don’t seem to acknowledge that simple fact. If England’s 2nd choice loose head was playing at tighthead against Mike Ross, it would’ve been the exact same thing in reverse. I suppose it feeds into their self image or something. “Manshaming” and “dominating” with their “English beef”. Ireland had been manhandling England for a few years at this stage and they wet themselves with excitement when this happened.

ahaha well done well done, same number of tries as australia. this is australia who have a world class backline so im pretty happy. england were naive, fine, its a young team. im not pleased with the result but if we can cut the mistakes then im pretty optimistic. if we had taken our penalties, could have been a very different result.

This is a pretty fair assessment I think it was the worst performance at scrum time I have ever seen. We should fair better in 2013. What is your take on Robshaw? I think he is a great player, probably made the wrong decision the last day but to be fair England didn't look like getting a try. You reckon the captaincy will change hands before the 6nations?
