12th July 1553 was Lady Jane Grey's third day as Queen of England but Mary Tudor was already intending to do everything in her power to seize the crown. Historian Helen Castor explores how Mary's allegiance grew in size and also how Lady Jane started to lose the loyalty of the Privy Council, which led to her becoming a prisoner in the Tower of London.
In 1553 Tudor England, Wales and Ireland is taken to the brink of a bloody civil war when the dying King Edward VI, son of Henry VIII, leaves the throne, not to his elder sister, Mary, but to his cousin, the Lady Jane Grey.
This is a story of intrigue, conspiracy, political manoeuvring and a capital city preparing to be attacked. It is also the story of a young woman, ferociously manipulated by powerful men in the palace, who ends up losing her life as a result.
The life of Lady Jane Grey is a tragic narrative. From the moment Edward VI draws Jane into the line of succession, her terrible fate, on the block in the Tower of London, is sealed.
Helen Castor is a historian and a medievalist who has studied the She Wolves, those women who held power in various ways throughout the medieval period. Now she sets out to take a close look at the first woman to sit on the English throne, not as consort, but as a reigning Queen. But Helen discovers far more than a story about a Tudor Queen. The story of Jane Grey is surrounded by myth, confusion and propaganda. Images turn out not to be Jane, well known stories turn out to be fake and many of the books disagree on the details. Helen asks why the first woman to be proclaimed Queen of England has attracted so much bending of the truth.
Helen undertakes some Tudor detective work and turns back to the primary sources in an attempt to separate the truth from the fiction. She builds the real story of Jane Grey and those dark figures that surrounded her, tracing her world, and the nine days she spent on the throne.

Let's not forget who her granny wqas either. The formidable Isabella of Spain, who donned armour and led her troops alongside her husband. These were not ladies to be trifled with! I think we actually have the Tudor Age back to front. Whilst the men are posturing, preening and playing power games it is actually the Women who were the tour de force. Not just the Royal ones either. Margaret Beaufort, Bess of Hardwicke, Elizabeth Raleigh, Katherine Parr, Anne Boleyn, Grainne O Malley; they were just some of the very influentional, powerful ladies during the Tudor age.

The fact that the nobles were surprised at Mary's ability to mobilize quickly and with authority is puzzling. She was the granddaughter of Isabella and the daughter of Catherine after all, both of whom were wise and savvy warrior queens. That combined with her stubborn and shrewd Tudor side made her a formidable opponent when her back was to the wall.

(Late response but…) I honestly disagree with this documentary’s premise that Jane’s supporters were surprised Mary raised her standard. If they weren’t expecting meaningful resistance, then why would they hide Edward’s death and make a mad dash for the Tower? I think they did miscalculate their strength compared to hers, but I don’t think they expected Mary to do nothing. Just like I don’t believe Jane had *no idea* she was a candidate for the throne before Edward’s death.

Mary I was not the couple’s firstborn child. Aragon’s firstborn was a stillborn daughter, born in 1510, followed by Henry Duke of Cornwall (born and died after 2 months) in 1511, followed by two short-lived sons (some sources say they may have stillborn) in 1513 and 1514 respectively. Mary I was born in 1516 ( their only child to survive past infancy) followed by the last, another stillborn daughter in 1518.

I've read that there are even some books where the leather binding is made stronger by the oils found on human skin! How cool is that?!

The modern Church of England only exists because Anne Boleyn played hard to get with Henry VIII. That is where it's roots lay. That is the reason why it was created. You misunderstand me. I think Anne Boleyn was brilliant. Her own sister Mary had been used by Henry VIII as a mistress, which hurt her reputation when the king ended it. Anne was smart enough to know that playing hard to get would make the king want her even more, and she was exactly right. Look at the lengths Henry went to in order to marry her. He created a whole knew Church of England because the pope wouldn't give him an annulment to his marriage with Catherine of Aragon. That was my point. It certainly wasn't meant as a criticism of Anne.

It's HIS fault Jane died. If he had refused Northumberlend she would have never been executed. Then once he beat Jane into submission he couldn't even hold the council together while Northumberlend was fighting in HIS place on the battlefield! Ive known men like him in my life, weak, cowardly, greedy, lazy, and selfish. I wouldn't be surprised if he was FAKING his "fainting" fits. I once knew a guy that faked a pancreatitis attack and had surgery he didnt need just to get out of bootcamp and he had only been at bootcamp for TWO days. THAT is who Jane's father was. He wanted the power and wealth of being father to the Queen of England but he didn't want to actually work to get it or risk himself to protect her. Poor Jane. But i think she was doomed no matter what her father did at that point. If he HAD gone to lead the army instead of Northumberlend he probably would have lost the battle. He had zero battle experience and probably no military or strategic education, he wasn't a very charismatic or inspiring leader and I have a feeling he probably would have run away during battle or ordered a retreat. I really think King Edward should have made his will and intention known before he died as soon as he had decided. It would give the people time to come to terms with it and most people wouldn't dare to defy the rightful King while he was still alive. The fact it was kept hidden until after he had died was a huge mistake

It was painful to listen that many of those who were in the side of Jane became traitors and support Mary, instead. Northumberland underestimated Mary's local support, and Jane's mistake was ordering Northumberland to replace her own father to lead the army in Cambridge. Too far-away from England to protect her.

The boy king, who designated Gray as successor, was an idiot to believe that his powerful half sisters, who were in line first, would accept being set aside for a bigotted teenager, who had not a chance to survive court politics and intrigues let alone public disapproval. Mary had been awaiting her moment to become queen for decades, sacrificing her life to that dream. She was raised as a princess to succeed her father who later changed his mind as we know but he did restore her to the succession. Jane Gray should have known that an Aragon woman was too strong to defeat.

Matilda led troops in her bid for the throne, so there was a precedent. She was fighting against King Stephen who usurped the throne from her. Poor Matilda she was denied her throne, though her son Henry II became Stephen’s heir, and now a historian is overlooking her. This is the second mistake made by this historian. The first was saying Mary was the oldest child of Catherine and Henry VIII, she wasn’t, she was the only child to survive more then a few days.

I think it is obvious that Mary's support came from the fact that people knew her and had loved her mother, Catherine - but who knew Lady Jane Grey? However, had the fight been between Mary and Elizabeth, her half sister, things would have been completely different. Mary's supporters against Jane most probably ignored religious beliefs to a certain extent - the contest was entirely about the legitimate heir to the throne, not about religion. This would not have been the case in a battle between Mary and Elizabeth in which religion would have played the foremost factor. I do not think that Mary would have won that particular battle.

One phrase stands out, for me. Jane lost the support of some, even most of the council when she refused to give her husband a crown, essentially making him King. As the men considered this, along with Guildford Dudleys refusal to accept her decision, this now makes the men wonder if Jane will be any better than Mary on the throne... basically why fight for Jane if the people want Mary... and Im sure Marys age and possible barrenness because of it, and Janes liklihood of childbirth, if Guildford can be brought back to the fold, was a very real concern. So many considerations...

If Jane Grey had remained Queen and Gilford recalcitrant she could have devoiced him under the precedent set by Henry VIII, as the head of the Church of England, and on grounds of failure to preform his husbandly 'duties'. Also, Mary was ironically known for her mercy outside of a very small group of protesters. In the whole of her reign she executed a total number of 300 people, many of which she tried very hard to spare ( just like she tried to spare Jane’s life by all means possible. She even tried to say Jane was pregnant but when the court tried to have Jane examined she became very upset and refused, which makes perfect sense). The nickname “Bloody Mary” was a big part of propaganda against her during this time. She was actually a lot less likely to execute people than her Father, brother, and even her sister Elizabeth I. Mary was known to pardon people( again, far more than anyone else in her family) and would often offer last minute pardons AS people were about to be executed. During her reign she did nothing shocking by burning people alive. In her time, this was pretty standard “punishment” as horrible as that sounds. Her dad, her brother, her sister, and even Martin Luther had people burned at the stake. I’m not trying to excuse her actions. I am simply deeply upset when I see comments that perpetuate false conceptions about historical facts that have long been perpetuated by myth and popular belief.

That 300 people you mention were only the people she had burned for not being Catholic. And that's an average of more than one a week during her reign. She was NOT less likely to execute than her sister, and comes out at least as bad as Henry VIII on religious affiliation. And for the most part, H8 did not spy on people and try to search out Catholics. Mary was a vengeful, persecuting 'Big Sister' -- truly.

I see a lot of hate towards Anne Boleyn here, but new studies state she didn't play 'hard to get'. She hated Henry, she left thinking he would forget about her but he was adamant. She was villainized terribly.

I have always felt (imo) that Jane should be officially recognized as a Queen. I'm not excusing what happened and I do believe she was a pawn. But right or wrong: she was given that title and she took it, she had control (for awhile), she was seated in that throne and wore her crown because of Edward's decision. That certainly wasn't Jane's fault. I mean, it isn't as if they took Edward out and put Jane in his place. Edward wanted her there. History is history, and some of it isn't pretty and tied with ribbons. To me in my heart, she'll always be, if only for 9 days, a Queen of England. ❤

It doesn't surprise me at all that Jane's downfall was brought about by treachery. I do not think there was another era of English history in which treachery and perjury were so rife as in the Tudor era. Was it because in earlier ages, politics had only been decided by the aristocrats, whereby in the Tudor era commoners rose to exalted rank and apparently changed their flags according to the wind direction?

Why on Earth did they have King Edward wear a blazon with Scotland's Royal coat of arms, the red Lion Rapant on a golden background, on his tunic, seen here at 03:00 minutes, instead of England's three Lions (or Leopards, as is often maintained) ?
