I lived in Castle Combe back in 1976. The house(s) I lived in you can see just to the right at the end of the bridge 1:11 and 6:45 the one with the peaked entrance. The house belonged to my then fiancee's parents. The house in fact consists of two houses. The stone faced house and the white house beside it. They purchased both houses and connected them. We lived there for 6 months. It was very quiet indeed. Back then, as today there were no street lights. There were two pubs in the Market Square. One for the locals and one for the tourists. The one for the locals had a parrot and a beer drinking dog. This is the village where they filmed part of the original Dr Doolittle movie. Fun fact the wall along the creek was built for the movie Dr. Doolittle and only dates from the 1960's. The only problem we used to have was when buses of tourists would visit the village. They thought that no one lived in the houses and they often just walked into the house unannounced. That was always fun.
@MAINER47795 жыл бұрын

I watch the movie because my then fiancee's father can be seen sitting in the upstairs window during the scene they filmed along side the "river". Since there are no street lights in town walking home from the pub was a bit tricky. Also all those "shoppes" did not exist when I lived there. We used to walk on the Manor House grounds. We had permission from the Manor House.

This is not the first time America looked for able and willing men from Europe to work in America. My grandfather, Leo, at the age of 16 sent a letter to Henry Ford at the Ford Factory to work in America. He arrived from Italy knowing only a few words and $3 to his name. He promised Henry Ford in the letter never to miss one day of work and in 52 years he never missed one day of work. My grandfather was a man of his word and was a good friend of Henry Ford.

Such a beautiful and appreciative video....many, like you good people, who realise there is life outside of London, are seeing more than, perhaps 90% of people, who have lived in the UK for all their lives! People were really tiny back then (check out Queen Victoria, who was only1.52 ms)........

London holds no appeal for me as I prefer the countryside, the small villages, the winding & narrow roads, no heavy traffic and just listening to the birds and taking in all the lovely sites of nature.

It's funny, we've received a bit of flack for "walking around and peering in windows" etc which we never did apart from the places that were intentionally open to tourists. All in all we agree though, the little towns are very special to us when travelling. It's a blessing to see places off the beaten path. Although we do love London though!

I remember when I brought my American friend to visit my hometown and he was having an absolute field day 😂 He couldn't believe there was just a 12th century church in the town square like no big deal and got pretty excited when I took him to the popular café here, which probably looks very English with the Tudor black and white style. It was kind of sweet because I don't think he, like many others, had really considered stepping out of London and yet he said he loved it so much more 🙂
Being a life long "Beauty and the Beast" fan , I agree with Jon, Castle Combe doors look like Belle's little(French) provincial town. Castle Combe is absolutely beautiful. I bet the manor is a bed and breakfast. Thanks for sharing

Watched 13 February 2020. UK. A trip down memory lane. Visited Castle Coombe several times when I used to live in Bristol. Little known fact is Castle Coombe was used to film the original Dr Dolittle film with Rex Harrison back in the 1960s I think it was. Thanks for downloading. You seemed a lovely couple. I only wish someone had invited you into one of their homes to look around. Thanks once again. X

@Michael Walton Sir, Saikat is a hindu bengali name and he is a hindu. We hindus have never attacked any country , never enslaved anyone on the basis of culture, race or religion. British has looted us but we aren't taught to hate british or anyone. We believe in " Vasudhiva Kutumbakam"( its a sanskrit word) which means " The whole world is a single family. " We are spiritual , a true hindu can never ever have materialistic thoughts. Don't compare us with " Peacefuls" ( M...ms) . Rather I would say you should visit our Motherland India once and must visit our temples ( I am not telling you to embrace hinduism, never , I am requesting you to see how we live , you can get the positive vibes). England will be a great place if you deport all the " peacefuls" .

Perhaps the village could install parking lots outside the village limits where people could park and board small vans/buses and be brought into town. Make it only a walking village to tourists. Of course people who live there can park at their homes or wherever. This is done on Oahu with Doris Duke’s home beside Diamond Head. It was the only way the neighborhood would allow it to open to the public. Works perfectly. Such a lovely hamlet.

Time your journey well. The M4 has long roadworks and can cause huge traffic jams but still a better alternative to taking an expensive train. Take extra care on the narrow country lanes especially at night and expect huge problems finding a place to park your car when you get there. The weather will always be an issue so take your umbrellas. Watch out for wide vehicles on narrow country lanes.

Alycia' comment about the current value of those tiny cottages, is very relevant. Virtually every one of such places in Britain, were in effect, 'Hovells' of the poor peasants, They were--until comparative recent decades, very spartan, crudely appointed , and in need of expensive repair. BUT--because of their exquisite location, and history, they were quickly bought up by the wealthy and well -to-do. as holiday homes/ weekend homes etc . who could afford the huge costs of modernising them, even to luxury standards..

Do you know if the smaller doors were for defense purposes or were the earlier generations just shorter than today? In many old houses, even the interior doors are lower.
@davidhoward24875 жыл бұрын
People were much smaller, is one reason, but over time I think the ground has dropped under the weight of the stones...Also, in castles, the stone staircase was built to be tight, and the steps went in a right spiral, so invaders would be made to use their left arm for sword fights...

@copferthat3 жыл бұрын
No, people were much smaller the farther you go back in England, due to the diet etc. If you were to wake up in London in 1800 you would think you had landed in Lilliput, as the average height of men would have been around 5’ 5” and women 5’.
@ianpodmore96663 жыл бұрын
I used to live in a 16th century cottage, sadly in the Black Country and not the Cotswolds but the roofs were head bangingly low and the doors were a good 6 inches smaller. Average male height in the UK was about 5 foot 4 inches in the 16th century, it's 6 inches more today.
