Such a shame. The Underbanks and Market Place, in an affluent town, would be prime real estate. Such character. I was born and raised in Stockport. It's still "home" despite leaving in 1989, and only returning occasionally. I may pay it one last visit, for a pint or two in the Market, for old times' sake. I live in South West France now. Most of my ties to Stockport have either died or moved away, as I did. I've run out of excuses to visit the old home. It's just nostalgia now. In truth it was never the most glamorous of places, grim really, but friendly. I grew up there, so I saw it through the eyes of a child. Robbies Mild still runs through my veins, along with the wines of my new home near Bordeaux.

Pedestrianisation => dereliction. Stockport did it first in Edgeley a quarter of a century ago. 30% vacancy rate (then one of the worst in the country) within ten years. Now this [as seen in video] and PITA parking schemes have ruined the town centre for business too.

True but im always walking around stockport and the shops that primarly open are the more modernised shops.

@@chriscoulson3356totally not true, the underbanks is full of old style independent shops. The marketplace is thriving with regular events for food and products with things like Foodie Friday which is a huge hit once a month. This video looks like it was taken on a Sunday as those some with the shutters down are simply closed for the day It would have been interesting if the film maker hadn’t cut the parts of the town they had to go through to find these closed premises as it would have shown some beautiful, unique and thriving businesses all over the place…..but I guess when you have an angle you have to stick to it. Stockport isn’t perfect, it’s had many years of decline, but in recent years it is having quite the revival with heavy investment throughout the borough, which will have been seen, but again that doesn’t suit the particular video. If the Film maker does return I’d love to join them and give them a tour of the town.

Lived in Stockport my whole life. This is the most biased/ selective video I've ever seen. Plenty of independent shops and bars are thriving now. Personally I think the town centre is the best its been for years. Its finally a nice place to go out for food and drinks (only in certain areas of course).

your not forgetting foodie friday my fellow Stopfordian and the new bus station and brand new costa coffee at bredbury roundabout, Stockport is the place to be this does highlight some areas that look our weakness and need a tiny litul TLC to restore to conditions on par with the new bus depo and costa coffee in bredbury, but these arent even the worst , the worst is that mantlepiece of yer mams 😂

288.000 people living in Stockport in 1991 and 292.000 people living there in 2021. Such a small increase compared to the population increase and add in the change of living in terms of all these shops which no longer serves a purpose

I used to live in Newcastle under Lyme so about forty miles south of Stockport but I would find myself there fairly frequently say twice a month. I now live in London and haven't been there in about sixteen years. But what on Earth happened? Other than years of a Tory government and Brexit, but that's happened all over and things look back but this just looks awful.
