It's a shame lineker and shearer didn't get more game time together..would of been a great partnership if lineker had been a few years younger!
@cddb54086 жыл бұрын
damian Omen I was thinking the same. 10 years between Lineker and Shearer and then about the same age difference between Shearer and Owen as well. Although Owen never scored more than 2 in a major tournament where as Liniker and Shearer got golden boots but would've been good to have 2 strikers at the same tournament getting many goals between them.

I think that it’s because they used proper film cameras in those days rather than the digital ones they use today. Photography experts, is this correct?

BAD finish by Jeff Thomas there 1:54 - those old enough to remember will know that finish haunted him for the rest of his career.

So many legends on that field. What a pity that Lineker/Shearer partnership was so short lived.

I bet everyone thought back then that Lineker would beat Charlton's goals record.
@ihateyoumother-fucker32045 жыл бұрын
He got stuck on 49 goals because in his last appearance he missed a Penalty against Argentina @ Wembley. PS he must have felt slightly better though a couple of years later when R.Baggio skied his penalty against Brazil in that WC finial.

When you see the lineups and their records to that point (also their groups), that's almost impossible. Also ENG to the semis 4 years later, France World Champions 6 years later... Maybe there was something in the water back then 😂

It's notable that FIFA/UEFA radically changed around their qualification process for Europe after 1994. "Play-offs", "more complex seeding methods", "playing more games per qualifying group", "doubling the number of teams the qualify for Euros" etc etc right around this period. IMO this was doing solely because they wanted to ensure the "big" teams (England, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and to a lesser extent Netherland, Portugal) qualify every single time. UEFA knew making larger groups, 2 leg play-offs etc would almost guarantee qualification for teams with large squad depth. I think not having TWO of the "big 5" teams at the World Cup was the final straw for them.

My first and (to date) only England game in the flesh. Privilege to see Shearer score on debut and Lineker with a classic finisher's goal (I think Jimmy Hill described it as 'like a mongoose after a snake' - even that thug Boli couldn't stop him. TBH I'd forgotten Cantona played that night. Shame for Geoff Thomas with his howler but he has since made his mark by fighting off leukaemia and becoming a charity hero. Have to say I was put off going again for years by the shambolic ticketing arrangements which meant we missed the KO, and the dire state of the crumbling old Wembley.

My first visit to the old wembley, was to watch Birmingham v Carlisle in the final of Auto windscreens cup in 1995. It was a dull game, only livened up by the first golden goal, which blues scored. I remember going for a pee, and thinking, this place is a bit of a dump. In 2001 blues played Liverpool in the league cup final at the new Cardiff stadium. It was light years ahead of wembley. It was magnificent.

@@pwareham61 I was at that match too. Wembley was indeed crumbling but it had loads of character. Carlisle dug in and matched Birmingham in the game, but the gulf in divisions eventually showed (especially after Mountfield went off)

Haha, that Thomas shot will never be forgotten. This was the Taylor era and England were a shambles without Waddle (who was class, but that idiot Taylor didn't like him) and Gazza (always injured).

The first one by Lineker was a decent effort. the one by Geoff Thomas was a bit terrible though, but do you expect from a 2nd division midfielder
