Two all-time greats portrayed here, both born in the XIX century and both with remarkable stats despite the WWI (in which they both served) lost years. Joe Smith (the captain) and David Jack (first goal ever scored at Wembley here, and he scored one more for the final 2-0) to this day 2nd and 3rd best goalscorers for Bolton after Nat Lofthouse, and among the best first league all time top scorers, both around the 250 goals. Smith was born in 1889 and was 34 here, would play until age 42 then become a legendary coach for 23 consecutive years at Blackpool, managing the team in the Matthews Final, their 1953 FA Cup win (ironically against Lofthouse's Bolton). It was also him who signed Stanley Matthews. Jack born in 1898 and son of a former scottish international, would later replace Charlie Buchan at Arsenal, becoming the first ever 5-digits transfer and being protagonist of the Chapman era successes until retiring in 1934. Two greats yet such simple, nice guys

Wow. 100 years ago... the silent commentary seems so jovial and friendly ("Well done, Hammers! Better luck next time!") and then England won the World Cup there in '66.

Apparently this is the biggest crowd for football ever. 300,000. Officially stated at 126,000, (tickets sold) but everyone knows it was over full by at least double. No seats, no space on the terraces, and at least 100,000 spread around the pitch.

I always like to wind up spurs fans who have a justified inferiority complex about Arsenal and keep insisting they are a big team. I tell them that West Ham must be bigger than spurs as more people watched this game other match in the history of football history

They kind of got forced onto the pitch to escape being crushed The hillsborough disaster would of been completely prevented if the fans could of spilled out onto the pitch like this. But instead they were crushed against the fences.

There were 259 recorded murders in England and Wales in 1923, with a population of around 38 million. In 2023, there were 590 murders in England and Wales, with a population of around 59.5 million. So the murder rate is roughly equal between now and 1923.

From the BBC Sport article. A rare instance of worthwhile coverage from that organisation, with a pleasantly surprising lack of complaining about the dearth of diversity. One can only shudder at the crime and violence that would ensue with the current population of London in such a situation. 100 years. The past is a different country. One from which we took - or were led down - the wrong path.
