I was at this game at Wembley. Bad call to disallow the goal for Russia. Glad we have VAR now to iron those out). But Russia got better as time went on. They of course, got to the semis at Euro 08.

Heskey used to get a lot of stick, but he was a superb target man. The ball could stick with him up top which worked so well for the players around him.

If Capello had picked Michael Owen, he would have become Englands alltime top scorer, but Capello never even bothered travelling to St. James Park. Owen was inform for Newcastle in 2008 scoring loads of goals! At the age of 27 he had scored 40 goals for England and could have had more. Just telling the truth.

I remember watching this game live ans thinking Owen was gonna get the record at the time. Such a shame. After his injury he could have played for a few more years easily and passed Charlton.

Defoe was better at the time

Defoe had his chances, but bottled it in big games. Owen even after his pace went could finish, and even in big games against big sides. Different mentality.

Anything about Owen is the truth except his age by 08 his already 29
@bocjagne28784 ай бұрын
@@jzlnz That's still very young. Easily had atleast 3 more years at the top. Look at Messi and Ronaldo.

This was a really good line-up that functioned brilliantly. But of course, they abandoned it as soon as bloody Rooney was available again.

We were playing Russia at home. A team we would regularly beat, especially at home. The game plan with Heskey in the side was always to lump it forward and Owen would feed off the knock-ons. Against very average opposition like Russia, we would win these games all day long. Against Brazil, France, Spain, Germany, Argentina, etc, the Heskey option was very limited at best. The return of a Rooney would result in a far better team, with more fluidity and actually keeping the ball (to make things happen). We still didn't succeed with Rooney though, due to the terrible coaching and management England have always suffered with.

Do you have the away game vs Russia?

1:00:29 Never underestimate how good Heskey was at those knockdowns.

Owens second was brilliant, just knew where the net was and smashed it in. No chance for the keeper.

Now I came to know why England golden generation never perform at the utmost level as they often play unnecessary long ball and were too slow

Coaching over the past 10 years has focused on ball retention and you can see that England are much better than they used to be. But actually, ball retention has improved for most sides over the past decade because coaches have suddenly seen the light that better posession was key.

@Dead-Ball-Situation @abfan8333 refreshing to read something positive about England. Southgate hasn't got everything right of course not but we had a good squad in 2000s and never progressed beyond QF. There were some fantastic individual players but they did not gel they would rather be wearing their club shirts. Under Gareth everyone wants to be playing for England (well maybe not Ben White but overall...) yes there has been the odd nervy performance the odd toothless one - happens to the best of teams occasionally- but nothing as bad as say South Africa 2010, Euro 2016 or indeed not qualifying for Euro 2008.

this game should be England 1-1 Russia, at that time, it was worst version of England team from 2008-2016, Russian team played too much defensive in the first half, second half Russian did better
