As far as I can tell VAR is there so that the prefered favorites can get a penalty kick to decide the games that are close. If I was coaching I'd tell my teams to kick at the arms in the box. Don't even worry about being on goal, jut kick hard and fast at any opposing player in the box and then raise your hands calling for a hand ball.

Congrats England, I am pulling for you from here in the US. FWIW, tho...I am wondering at this point of the level of reffing we have so far seen in 2 days is indicative of what it will be in rest of tourney - because the reffing thus far has been poor and bad decisions have resulted in undue influence on a few of the final tallies, sadly. That was not a Hand Ball at start of match because : 1) the arm was not in an unnatural position (despite announcer's claim) when you consider direction of momentum of defender and 2) ball played hand, hand did not play ball. These are two 'considerations' under FIFA rules, and both considerations were 'negative'..thus should not have been a handball foul, should not have been a PK.

The penalty given in Sweden-Thailand was even worse. The Thai player had her arm down. The ball got kicked against her hand. No decent referee would've given that penatly.

The handball rule is stupid. It is a natural thing for players to raise their hands to protect their face from the ball. Does Fifa expect rational human beings to allow a football which can be moving over 100mph to strike them in the face?

Too many handballs are given in instances where defender is too close to attempt any kind of deliberate handball. No right-minded person places the upper body in a position where it can be struck by a speeding football without trying to protect in some way.

Clearly unintentional handballs should not result in penalty kicks. Not a difficult rule to enforce within goal area, though league would need to keep track of defenders with handball violations to ensure honesty.

As an American I think it was ridiculous that it has taken British Women's football so long to hit its present stride. When US Manger Jill Ellis left England as a young girl there were no opportunities for her in football. When she came to New Jersey, every town and hamlet had a competitve girls youth football program and also top rate High School and University programs. Better late than never I guess.
