The lack of natural technical ability in the old England teams was quite shocking. I remember the gulf in skill between England and the other nations being particularly evident in this tournament. Only to leave all the talent on the bench
@JamesCM863 жыл бұрын
@@jeffrejr1 this type of response is so ridiculous. England’s results in major touches consistently improved since this disaster, check the record. So it’s CRYSTAL CLEAR improvements have been made, only now are England managing to get to the latter stages of competitions. Stop crying because your favourite players from your club aren’t playing. Managing a national team is a completely different beast.
@sheilaburrowes90812 жыл бұрын
The idea that Gerrard, Lampard, Carrick, Cole, Rooney and co. (and Scholes, Beckham et al. just before them) didn't have immense levels of technical skill is ludicrous. This was during a period in which English clubs, with English players playing a lot of key roles, were in CL finals every single year. And a decade in which English players had been Ballon D'or candidates/winners. I tend to subscribe to the idea that the system, management, and use of players etc. were all wrong, and that the players didn't have chemistry as a team, on or off the field. And that very few of them managed to replicate their club form for England, whether due to lack of commitment or something else entirely (it was probably a variety of factors that will forever remain a mystery, like how Rooney somehow managed to go almost his entire career without a WC goal, until he scored a solitary consolation in the twilight of his footballing years for a paltry record of 1 in about 10 matches). I don't know if our 2018 and 2020 squads were, on paper, actually any stronger than the "golden generation". Certainly, I think there were some XIs from the '90s and '00s that were individually more talented than our current XI. The only real difference seems to be that most memeable of attributes: passion. And a greater team spirit and chemistry. And, perhaps ironically in the age of social media narcissism, lesser egos. Even the truly elite players like Kane don't project an aura of being above their teammates or above putting in the grind for their country, regardless of the opposition. (Though I'd suggest that Kane, in particular, also hasn't fully applied his ability at club level to England, despite his ridiculous goal record. Which is notable at an NT like England with Southgate where some players, like Pickford, retain their positions purely by playing _better_ for country than they do at their clubs. Sven would never have kept a player in the team based on international form alone, for better or worse. It does seem like Gareth's loyalty strategy pays off a lot of the time, see also: Pickford's heroics in the Euros and WC shootouts.) The only thing we can say for sure is that the elite players from the "golden generation", when they've spoken about that era, have largely focused on cliques, club rivalries, a lack of chemistry, and mismanagement (e.g. Sven's tendency to prioritise names over the system, especially when he tried to play Gerrard, Lampard, and Scholes all at the same time).

After this game Capello benched Green... but instead of starting a young promising Hart, he puts in Calamity James in goal
@RoadCone4113 жыл бұрын
TO be fair, Green was not a terrible goalkeeper but obviously this game scarred his confidence and will always define his England career. I see a lot of similarities in the way Green played to the way current England keeper Pickford plays now, the major difference is Pickford is reliable where Green was shaky when it counted. There really was no way to recover from Green's gaffe in the eyes of the English supporters, so somebody else had to go between the sticks in South Africa (I know Green did had a few more caps after this tournament.) Also lost in here is that the USA team was on the ascendancy, four years away from their best performance at a World Cup - they fell flat against Ghana but really hadn't been too bad for most of the 2010 tournament. After Green's miss, 1-1 with the USA seemed an appropriate result. In general, the 2010 England team defined what it was like to be an England supporter during this period. There was talent on the pitch for sure - Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, and Hart - but also so many question marks and a lack of creativity, as well as no spark when it was needed. This was especially evident when compared to the Brazilian, Spanish and German teams of the period. An easy qualifying group didn't do enough to prepare this England squad for real tournament experience; this was a classic case of expectations being far too high for what this group of underachieving players were capable of producing. Fast forward 11 years...I just watched an inspired England team beat Germany 2-0 in the Euros. This team may or may not go on to win this tournament but they're playing team-first football, a group of talented players who seem to gel much better than some previous iterations of the Three Lions. Southgate has made all the right decisions so far, albeit all games played at Wembley having certainly helped. Southgate seems to have the right personality for the job, something you couldn't always say about Capello or Hodgson, but now, after beating the oldest enemy (and Southgate exacting a small amount of payback), England is going to have to deal with something it hasn't had to in a long time: the weight of expectations. I, for one, really hope this 2021 team does not get too comfortable yet. Unlike what we saw from England in South Africa, hopefully they have an extra gear or two they can pop in to when times get tough. The Germany game could have easily been 1-1 heading down the stretch.

Who's here after they NOW faced eachother in the Women's World Cup?
@tufty19906 жыл бұрын
Have to say, felt this at the time still feel it now, howler is certainly Green's fault, but a completely forgotten wonder save in the second half kept us from going out and it certainly wasn't his fault that England couldn't score more than one goal against a team they should've been leagues ahead of. Mistake yes but unfairly villified IMO
@rohanmarkjay3 жыл бұрын
Just like every WC or Euro. They think they will get into the semis or final easy. Then everyone is surprised when they are inevitably knocked out early.
