The 'moderate' team that won against England 2:0 in the same qualifiers, won against Argentine 3:2, against Italy 2:1 (when they already progressed from the group), then won against Yugoslavia and Sweden, and against Brasil for 3rd place. They only lost against Germany 1:0 on a waterlogged pitch. Lato was best goalscorer of WC '74 and Szarmach had only one less goal. Deyna was chosen as 3rd best player in the world by France Football for Ballon d'Or in '74. And in 1975 this team defeated the Netherlands 4:1 in European qualifiers - Cruyff and co. Yeah, truly 'moderate' team.

In 1973, the audience still yelled "Animals" to the Poles. It was doubly sad, especially after the Poles fought for England in 1940. and then Churchill sold Poland to Stalin.

People say England were crap throughout the 70s just because they didn't qualify for the 74 and 78 finals. But look at the qualifying groups. Each time only the winners went though. No runners up or play off spots. In 74 we lost out to Poland, and despite what Channon says here they went and proved their worth by coming 3rd in the finals. In 78 we lost out to Italy on goal difference. No shame losing out to Italy, who went on to come 4th.

Exactly we were very good in the 70's and deserved to go to the two WC's. They were a far better than the team that got to the Semi finals this year I think.

@@r4h4al Hello Michael, I respect your comments but excuses don't justify not qualifying .In 73 we were unlucky but a aging squad and no pace to match a young polish side. Also we relied on scoring but as the late Bill Shankley ust to say the ' Score lines speaks for it self . The English were so close to qualify for the WC in Germany. They dominated that Wembley match but as Rinus Michels ( Dutch NT trainer of that time) said in one of the interviews during qualifications, the Polish team had greater chance to qualify.

Paul Breitner said that it was Poland, and not the Netherlands, who were the best team he played against in the 1974 WC finals. Can’t imagine him saying the same thing about England. The trouble with England is that they think they are one of the best teams

It's interesting to see how much traumatic this was and still appears to be for England's football after 40 years. Opinions are just opinions. England was not as great and Poland was not as average as it is claimed in this movie (Poland beat Italy, Argentina and Brazil the following year). Usually one would rather rationalise a defeat like that: England was unlucky in the game but at the end got eliminated by a team that turned out to be 3rd in the world. Instead Channon is in a superiority complex denial: we're the best in the world but there was a clown on the other side in the goal. Fortunately there are a few following matches over the years to prove it... ;-)

No question England was a better team at Wembley as Poland was better earlier that year when they beat them in Poland 2:0... but saying that Poland won 3rd place and was "moderate" was out of line. English arrogance shows. At the world cup if Poland met England there is no doubt in my mind England would be defeated.

I was always wondering why after 1973 game on Wembley Polish Football Federation did not organize any friendly game with England until they met on 1996 in World Cup.in Mexico where they lost . Polish football.team was one of the best in the world at that time especially in 77/78 and they would crush any team , especially the team like England ..78 Mundial Team was the strongest .polish team ever with many young talented players but .inside conflicts between old and young players made this team completely immobilized. Some players were fighting between each other and others refused to play.. That was one of the reason they finished 5 in 78 Mundial.

The way Channon tells it we were a great side just a millimetre away from winning everything. The arrogance or stupidity of the man. The England team were very poor hence they didn't qualify for a single tournament between 1970 and 1982. They sound like Aston Villa fans who cos they won a big tourno once then they could have won it every year.

We didn’t *ALL* call Tomaszewski a clown - only CLOUGH did. You can see Brian Moore (the host) arguing with him at the time. And it haunted Clough as a comment and is notorious as one of the worst bits of punditry in British TV history
