to be fair, it was only one person (an outspoken person!) who called the keeper a "clown", not the whole nation. There was no shame in being edged out by Poland, they were one of the best teams in this era as they showed in 1974 and 1982 world cups.

A few years after this game, Brian Clough contacted Tomaszewski to apologise. Beating England at Wembley during 1970's wasn't such a shock and Poland in 1972-78 was likely the 2nd or 3rd best European team of that time. It was just a shock for those people in England who were living in fantasies that their football is "best in the world". It has never been and will never be.
@dreamdream0119 жыл бұрын
bandwagon22 Poland was playing phenomenal football during that time. Likely they had the best team at the time in Europe and in the world. Sure they lost to Germany during the WC in a game played in abnormal conditions. Also, they lost their 2 best strikers. Lubanski was injured during first game with England and Szarmach couldn't play that game against Germany either. Huge loss to the team. I wonder how would Germany do just without Gerd Muller alone.

Always fascinating to revisit this. It must have been such a hammer blow for the English national team at the time- they seemed to take many years to recover. A few things stand out for me: - Brian Clough's behaviour was tragic- so little respect and he must have felt such a fool afterwards. There's so much focus on Norman Hunter, yet the great Bobby Moore made a bigger mistake during the game in Poland which resulted in Poland's second goal- rarely mentioned directly as a historical note.

Cloughie was right. I`ve never seen a luckier goalkeeper in my life. Looked like something you`d see in a circus. Ball was hitting him everywhere, ankles, shins, studs, arsehole. He was flapping at crosses, missing his punches. Shots were blocked on the line, kicked off the line, woodwork saved him. Absolute clown like performance but it was just his lucky day. You could replay that game a thousand times and England would have won every other game. Unbelievable. And to rub salt in the wounds, the Poles went on to finish 3rd in the World Cup leaving everyone to wonder what might have been.

Having read most of the comments here, I have to add my two cents. I don't know if Clough apologized to Tomaszewski, but reportedly they became quite friendly and there were no hard feelings. Fact is that our team was highly motivated because the English players and press acted very over-confident prior to the match, some disrespectful remarks had been made. Fact is also that the English side played very well and it was a shame only one team could qualify from this group.

england pretty much blew qualification long before this game - the lost away to Poland and drew 1-1 with Wales in Wembley. Poland were arguably the best team at the 1974 World Cup Finals finished top scorers and winning 6 of the 7 games, they played there - with a waterlogged pitch being to blame for their narrow loss to west germany.
@Monkas14 жыл бұрын
I think the authors of this document underestimated the Polish attack in that match. There were some hundred per cent situations there with Lato facing the goalkeeper alone among them. However the situations in which England couldn't score were amazing and there were plenty of them.

That October 17 World Cup qualifier at Wembley in 1973 between England and Poland is now fourty seven years old. As a teenager of thirteen I was shattered as so many of my classmates that included LVK when England failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany.That 1-1 draw with England enabled Poland to pip the former thus qualifying for the Munich finals. Sir Alf Ramsey's future as the England supremo was sealed with that failure to qualify but it did not lead to his immediate sacking which came in effect May 1974. What are we to make of England's crucial World Cup match with Poland that fateful night at Wembley on 17 October 1973? Yes it was the Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski dubbed the "Clown" by Brian Clough whose miraculous saves albeit by luck denied England her finest hour in football. So many chances went abegging that night.Chivers,Channon,Clarke, Peters,Bell and Kevin Hector had their chances but the ball just would not go in.And England forced 26 corners to Poland's just two. But the visitors defended magnificently to hold on to the draw thus sending England out of the World Cup finals since 1950. It was Sir Alf's last ever charge of England in a competitive but the FA of England should have sacked him much earlier. All the same it was the blackest day in English football and for Martin Chivers it would be the last time he wore the England shirt as he would never play for the country again.

For those of us who were there, either watching it on the box as I was or at the ground...... It was a feeling that stayed for quite some time. Don't forget, Poland went onto beat Italy in the Group game (we would have been playing against them had we beat the Poles) 2-1.... again Tomaszewski played a blinder... he did make some great saves, but a lot of the stuff we fired in was straight at him so he looked like he'd made a great save.

One of the few occasions when Brian Clough was wrong. Poland finished 3rd in the '74 World Cup, and I think they finished 3rd in ''78. I think most England fans realise that there is some way to go before England become a top international side. As many posts have rightly stated, always respect your opponents and never underestimate them. England had already been beaten by Poland so should have known this game would be no walk in the park.

@staszekgobi I don't know if you noticed, but before Britain declared war on Germany TWO countries invaded Poland - Germany and Soviet Russia. We may have helped to get the Germans out of Poland, but we sure as fuck left the country to rot under Stalin as soon as we had done. So how exactly did Britain save Poland during the 2nd world war? The Poles who fought bravely in our military did much more to save British freedoms than the Brits did for the Poles.

It should also be mentioned that although Poland would go on to prove that they had deserved to qualify, the team to play against England wasn't the same team that became a sensation in West Germany. The latter would never have to defend their goal for 90 minutes, because they were a much more offensive and confident team. Mlynarczyk was deifinitely not a better keeper than Tomaszewski, he had some major mistakes in important matches. And I agree with Goldyn:That save against Clarke was amazing

I could not agree more. Poland had a great team in the 70`s and early 80`s.The only reason why they did not win the world cup in 1974 or at least make the final was that their attacking fire power was greatly reduced by the referee who allowed the semi final game against Germany in ankle deep puddles of water to proceed , which resulted in a 1:0 loss to the host nation. Poland against Holland would have been a spectacular final and I would have placed my bet on Poland.

Anyway POL finished 3rd in WC next year scoring most goals in the tournament and beating ARG, ITA and BRA, Lato became top-scorer with 7 goals. In '78 ENG also didn't qualify to WC while POL finished 5-6th. In '82 ENG was eliminated in 2nd round, POL gained bronze again. At last, in '86 Lineker scored hat-trick against POL. In 90's both teams played regularly in WC/EC qualifications. ENG always won at home and usually drew away.

Ramsey was England's greatest manager by a long way. If he had allowed himself to be pressured by the media into picking Greaves for the 1966 final instead of the hard working Hunt or the in form Hurst, England would have lost. Greaves never produced the goods in 1962 or 1966 and was rightly left out.
