Austria look good because their coach is playing the right players in the right system and in the right spots. They're not the greatest of players, but they know their system, trust the coach and know their roles. That's the difference between a good coach and a bad one. Brian Clough was a master at this. His NFFC team of the 70/80s were not the best individuals, but as a collective and coached correctly, they were winners. Southgate is clueless. He's only done well in previous tournaments because he's had some of the best players in the world dragging his negative tactics along and played some of the worst teams in those tournaments. As soon as England meet a decent team, they always failed.

It’s a shambles and the problem is that despite this team not working for 3 games now, he’ll start the same team for the 4th game, it’s the definition of madness. You’ve got Kane at striker playing like a CDM, you’ve got Foden at LW playing central, you’ve got Bellingham at 10 playing like a LCM/LW, trippier at left back cutting in playing like a left DM it’s a shambles. How can the whole country see it but Southgate not. Rice 6 Bellingham 8 Foden 10. Foden actually played well centrally but the problem is he was supposed to be LW so when he picked up the ball in the middle Kane was behind him, nobody was on the left and the only option he had was to the right. Slovenias RB who plays for European giants Celje had the easiest night of his career it’s embarrassing. Not expecting any change for the next game. Also brining mainoo in means more of Foden at LW and more of Bellingham at 10 which obviously isn’t working. The argument I’m making would mean dropping Gallagher which is a lot more likely and should be obvious and not too risky even for Southgate. Bellingham’s a box to box 8, his shirt got retired playing that position, he got a transfer to Dortmund and dominated the bundesliga playing that position and a 100m move at the age of 19 playing that position. Suggesting Bellingham as an 8 isn’t that wild, he’s an 8.

Palmer and Mainoo showed more in a few mins than some have shown in 3 games. There is no reason not to start them both. 2 mins for Gordon is a crime against humanity. Start him too. I know, I’m ripping up the team. I don’t mean to but it’s knockout time so there is no more time for lethargy. When an over 70’s walking football team could have matched England in the first half, such was the lack of movement, you know and can see what the problem is. The 3 I’ve mentioned came on and the first thing they did was move…it lifted everyone. Even Kane got involved more. We can no longer play static “pass to feet and stand still” football.

How do you get Foden & Bellingham in their best positions? Well Foden is best in that inside right pocket, cutting in and shooting on his left. Bellingham likes to drift left and drive in from there. So play them in those positions and build the team around them, it's not difficult. Kane is up front, Rice in the middle, Stones & Guéhi at the back. Walker will play because of his experience and recovery pace. Pickford in goal.That leaves 3 more positions to fill. The most obvious is to go with a back four, Trippier/Shaw at left-back, and two wide players to stretch the pitch. On the right it can be Saka/Palmer/Bowen, on the left you could play Gordon/Saka. We can press high, or if needed, Bellingham drops alongside Rice and we defend a bit deeper. An alternative could be to play like Bayer Leverkusen. Guéhi, Stones and Walker form a back three; Rice and Mainoo sit in front of them; Saka/Shaw plays as a left wing-back, Trent as a right wing-back. But Southgate isn't about to change the system in the knockout stages of a major tournament.

Because good and great teams win because of great balance, a collective team and not great individuals playing what looks like for themselves, you drop either Bellingham or Foden, you cant play both. Southgate is at very best an average championship coach and thats being kind.

England falling into the same trap they always do, and have done for decades. Round pegs in square holes, playing "names" instead of a cohesive team. Fifteen years ago it was unthinkable not to play Lampard or Gerrard, it never worked, yet they played time and time again. When players like Carrick (a naturally more defensive player) would have added far more balance to the team as a whole.
