As an ex / redundant miner, it's great to see some of you young lads showing an interest in the pits. I just wish you could have gone down one of our deep mines and witnessed with your own eyes how we worked and lived. Myself and work mates working some.2,500 /3,000.ft below ground ..at around 120 degrees ! & ³Dropping down 1,000+ shafts at a mere.14 mtrs per second. Oh, and yes, I truly miss those days, even though it cost me the use of my right arm in a roof fall ! But bless ya kid.👍

Thanks Greg! My great grandad was a miner, and I was brought up overlooking the Orgreave site. Closest I’ve been is going down to pit bottom at the coal mining museum - great experience. Thanks for watching!

@@greg5639 I'm nothing special! Don't under sell yourself, you kept houses warm and factories supplied with power. You are part of the backbone of this nation. You are infinately more important than any of the pen pushing politicians who don't work for us but work for the aristocrats.

As a lad from a traditionally small mining town outside of Sunderland, who now lives in Sheffield, I always like finding out about different aspects of Northern history. This was very interesting and well presented, and I look forward to more of your videos.

Very much appreciated! Glad you enjoyed. I have a few videos planned up your neck of the woods but probably won’t be until I start seeing the effects of my pay rise! 😂

I worked at both,I actually went down that shaft every day, as a haulage lad, into the Swallow Wood Seam, it was known as the Barrow/ Barnsley Main number 2 shaft, the other shaft that reopened in 1985 was known as Barnsley Main number 4 shaft, after being sealed shut in 1966.

The track lines you mentioned lead off to join the massive coal railway network that barnsley once had linking all mines in barnsley (there was loads) with the major line’s leading to the docks at hill to ship the coal out.across the road in the park was a massive viaduct that’s not there anymore and also one over stair foot roundabout that’s gone. The railway lines that once stood are now the trans penine trails

Is the shaft filled in or just capped off?

Hartley Colliery was another massive loss of life which i believe led to the requirement to have 2 shafts as opposed to just the 1 that Hartley had

There was another massive loss of life because of explosion at the burns colliery at Stanley co,durham. Its hard to imagine kids of ten years old working in that hell now

Unreal isn’t it. Very sad history of that industry. Provided so much positive alongside much heartbreak too.

Same as @crazypitf below (also from Sunderland, from a mining background in the East Durham Coalfield, Murton), just stumbled across this, and it's something I didn't even know about. I had previously thought the Hartley one was the worst, and I wasn't even close, the one in Senghenydd was the worst UK one. But this, and the others, terrible, really terrible. Thanks for this video.

What an awful tragedy , is there a monument on the property listing all the victims ? If not perhaps you could suggest the possibility of having one put up . I think that would be a proper thing to do to honor the victims . What do you think Sir ? All The Best Terry
