You know, little over a year back I did a Halloween AMV using this song, but I had no idea what the lyrics where so I pretty much just tried to match footage with the tone of the song. What surprised me was listening to this, reading the translations, and thinking back to my AMV, I was pretty darn close to matching the lyrics with the footage. PS: I actually like the phrase "Shatter" for this song, although it's not as rhythmic as Kowarero.

That gets into the whole argument of 'transliteration vs. adaptation/translation', which is an interminable argument; for my part, the fact that the words 'shatter' and 'break' are awkward in that context in English is enough reason to use some other word. Others might disagree, and there's really no right answer in the broad sense.

At 2:32, at the end is "Sphaela", which if I remember right means something along the lines of cage. I can't help but to wonder if the hymnos is in a way saying "Release your spirit/mind from the cage of your body", or along the lines, since 'be shattered' is one of the main portents in this song.

@missdeona According to the revatail(s) who executed this hymmnos in the game, SUBLIMATION is not for making people "die", but for disconnecting each person's soul from the physical world and making everyone be free from agonies of the ordinary world -- although people would think it isn't any different from "death" -- That's why I didn't use the word "die." I feel, however, "Be shattered" sounds somewhat stupid o_o I still wish I could find much more appropriate English word.

@doomblaster300 Thank you :) But, although it's true that hymmnoses are primarily for expression of emotions, accurate translation is still crucial. It's because translated text, in essence, must convey the original text as exactly as possible. The translation of hymmnos lyrics, too, should be exact so that people can accurately understand the emotions contained in the words. So I do my best to fulfill that when translating them... but, in fact, it doesn't always go well ;)

Wow, this Japanese is really formal and archaic-sounding. Fitting for a song of rage from the planet itself, the controlling and reigning force of life and death, looming and presiding over the insignificant humans it once loved. Is this what Final Fantasy 7 would have been like if some things were different? Like...the planet giving up on the people destroying it and the people trying to save it?
@aquagondrag

Except the planet isn't who sings this song or any of the Sublimation parts. You're confusing it with XaaaCi.
@aquagondrag
@aquagondrag 6 жыл бұрын
XaaaCi is merely a declaration of intent by the Planet and a transmission of the feelings it has toward humanity. It has no actual effects, and it doesn't need to have them either because the Planet has already sent the Antibodies to carry out that task.

"Sphaela" means "world" in New Testament of Pastalie. And both myself and others have tried deciphering what it means, but since the meaning of one of the words is unknown, it's impossible to fully translate it. That sentence translates more or less to this: "Praise the absence of laments! Praise 'kieghi'! Praise sadness! Praise this dying world!!"; where 'kieghi' is the unknown word.

Maybe "Break (away) " could have worked? I've studied a little of Japanese, and I remember that "Kowareru" can mean "to break, to shatter" to an extent ^.^;; And with the mention of disconnecting a person from agonies, trying to break them away, could that sort of translation work?

Never played it (yes blasphemy, I know.) But I do plan to get into the Persona franchise, I've just been procrastinating it for a while now. Simply explanation being "my heart flutters along like the wind." meaning (anime/game-wise) I always end up finding something that peaks my interest to the point where I just ignore the other things I was planning to do. Eventually I will get around to things, it just might take months-years before I do.

@ChurchOfArceus I think that can be a good suggestion. Although "to be torn apart" sounds more like "切り裂かれる(kirisakareru)" in Japanese, it sounds more natural. In fact, an online Jp-En dictionary provided by goo, a Japanese web portal, said that "kowarero" means "to be broken", "be destroyed", and "be damaged."

@suiryuukishi Oh, that's definitely the vital factor I overlooked for a long time since the beginning of the video-making o_o But I doubt "Die!" sounds highly suitable in that content, either: a human can certainly "die," but can a world "die?" Maybe I'll stick to somewhat literal translation if I revise this video (of course I'll try to use much more proper expression, though.)

@AbstractGarden... given the nature of japanese to english tenses, however- "to be" is generally dropped... it'd be something closer to saying "break" or "shatter" than to put in the "be shattered". English generally ignores all adverbs and pronouns when it comes to command "imperative" language. Often replacing it with an exclamation point. So it'd be something like "Shatter! Shatter! Shatter! Disintigrate!" Closer psychological meaning... if not closer literal.

@suiryuukishi P.S. There was a typo in one of my replies: instead of "the content of everyday life," "the context of everyday life" is correct.
@AbstractGarden
@AbstractGarden 13 жыл бұрын
@suiryuukishi As a result, the idea of "the total destruction of the world" might be distorted into something like a massive killing. That's what I intended to say when saying "but can a world die?" (I admit it was very unclear, though.) Therefore, I want to find another expression which sounds more natural than "be shattered" and is closer to the original phrase than "die" is. But I'll also put "die" in consideration as an alternative.

why do i have the feeling that when someone finally is able to translate that line of gibberish at the begining it will be something ominous and terrifying. has anyone ever tried looking for hymmnos words in that giant mess or is it just one phrase?
@AbstractGarden
@AbstractGarden 13 жыл бұрын
@suiryuukishi Actually, the expression 'world is dying' isn't awkward even in the content of everyday life. But if people hear someone saying "die!," usually they would instantly think that he/she wants "someone," or any sort of living things, to die. In this regard, using "die!" can give false --and quite a concrete-- impression that the lyrical narrator wants to kill (only) living things including mankinds. (cont'd)

They're "corrupted" sentences and so are meant to be untranslatable as I understand it. I think somewhere on the conlang wiki someone broke it down into a likely sentence in proper NTP (the language the rest of the song is in), though I don't know if that comment is still up.

@udsuna Because of my lack of knowledge of English, I didn't realize the word "shatter" could be used in that form. I might have considered "Shatter!" only if I'd known that... I feel all the more I should improve my English harder XD One thing what I'm a little concerned about is... it seems that people who see "Shatter!" would ask, "shatter what?" Hopely, the phrase like "Disintegrate" would clarify the meaning of "shatter", though.
