Ollie: "I would say though unlike a virus, when you've been exposed to memes, you don't generate immunity to those memes" Okay, fully aware that I'm taking this far too seriously but, you sort of do. If you see a meme once and it's funny, you laugh and might share it, but if you've seen the exact same meme a second time you probably won't laugh and share it, so you're sort of immune if you think of laughing and sharing as "being infected and contagious".

Here's a fun fact: The word "meme" was coined by Richard Dawkins, who used it to explain self replication in genetics. The word's use today is still appropriate, as it is used to define simple units that replicate and change over time (just like funny memes do).
@homelessrobot4 жыл бұрын
It was not used to explain self replication in genetics, its to explain a parallel between genetic proliferation and cultural proliferation. In the same way that genetics takes advantage of chemistry and sexuality to duplicate, mutate, and select for 'good' biological structures, culture takes advantage of human psychology, interaction, and communication to duplicate, mutate, and select for 'good' cultural artifacts. Why are hats a thing? Why are there so many different sorts of hats? Why are there a few particularly popular sorts of hats? The memes of ancient people.

Idk if this is at all related, but the word "même" in French means "the same"...?? I'm interested to know if that's from the same root or something
@LagMasterSam4 жыл бұрын
@@lizziebethh From Richard Dawkins book, The Selfish Gene... "We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. 'Mimeme' comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like 'gene'. I hope my classicist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme. If it is any consolation, it could alternatively be thought of as being related to 'memory', or to the French word même. It should be pronounced to rhyme with 'cream'."
@homelessrobot4 жыл бұрын
@@LagMasterSam Yes, the root of the word is a combination of 'gene' and the greek word that 'mnemonic' comes from, 'mnēmonikos' which means "relating to memory". It's a mind-gene.
