It's more like teaching highschoolers how to use weird, obscure, rarely used but smart-sounding science jargon rather than how to interact with actual human beings. It's robotic and unnatural. I've met hella smart Koreans but only few of them can use English properly, if the tests are so hard that even native English speakers are having a hard time doing them, they should be geniuses lmao.

This is Patrick yesss I feel like schools should teach English that people would actually use and need if they were to visit an English speaking country and not make everything sound so robotic and intelligent. In reality, most English speakers use just easier and understandable words

Pun Jab I yeah that one is the exam. But to pass that exam, they need to learn right? Just imagine the time they had to learn, plus other subjects that they had to learn, versus the level they had to reach in that relatively short period of time. I'm pretty sure most of them would agree that it wasn't a fun learning experience.

@@cHiKa0o0 that's like learning how to run before u even learn to walk, it makes no sense. U gotta be able to master the basics & fundamentals of the language itself first. Comprehending thesis & dissertations is more of a skill (a high level one at that) rather than the study of the language itself. In most places, this skill is acquired AFTER you're in college, not a benchmark to get into one

@@cHiKa0o0 If the purpose of language studies is to learn a language and not many post-high school Koreans can hold a varied conversation in English, I'd say the curriculum failed. The purpose of the test is quite stupid, why would you need to have the ability to analyse any sort of thesis without even having a solid grasp of the language itself. Us students in Britain where English is our first language, only learn how to deconstruct difficult English passages at a later stage, perhaps around 17/18. I can't expect Koreans to be on that level if it isn't their first language. Basics first!! Always!!

@@cHiKa0o0 theres nothing wrong with learning high-level english but to teach that kind of english isnt kinda useless? I mean english speaking countries cant even comprehend that english easily. And also even theses nowadays dont even use that many big words. My english and research teacher taught us to use easy to understand wordd and should not use big words if theres a simpler words that can be used. That kind of english should only be to student who want to specialize on english language or subject in my opinion.

@@johnnyjoestar7143 I have to disagree with you on some points. I've learned French as a 2nd language since kindergarten which I think is essentially how English is taught in Korea. In my country, when we're in our senior year, we have to read 3 books, deconstruct passages from them, answer some (admittedly far easier than the Korean SAT) questions, and write a short essay. I think it's unfair to judge language skills by conversation only. Most of the time, in jobs in my country, you'd need to write more than speak the language so more emphasis is put on that. Fluent conversation skills can also be acquired, for example we put more emphasis on that in my college than in high school because in my major it was deemed as needed. I can't say that the majority in my country speak or even write well in French. But I'm sure almost no country can say that about any foreign language.

Fun fact, If you are in an English class in Canada(and probably most English-speaking countries) and you managed to write an essay with sentences like this, you'll get your marks taken off. There's a limit to how long and complex a sentence should be before it becomes incomprehensible.

This isnt common outside of canada? But yeah, that's very true here. Later down the line (cant remember what grade) I vividly remember having to write these weekly papers with a strict half-page limit (usually some proposed prompt / question that we had to agree/disagree/argue with). I can't even begin to imagine the nightmares that would cause for people in Korea if they grew up learning language like THAT.

(and for anyone that says that it sounds "easy", there's a few reasons why those short-prompts seemed quite difficult looking back, but basically tracks back down to "outgrowing habits" as well. While its true that "academic fluff" was indeed always discouraged; in the grades leading up to this we were taught a very ... structured (albeit basic) methodology of writing "effective paragraphs" (topic sentance, core argument/statement, 2-3x supportive evidence, concluding sentence) etc etc But the whole point i believe was learning how to strip down and get to the core of your argument in a short amount of time (and that theres more than one way of wriying a paragraph lol) - this was MANY years ago btw, so might be remembering wrong too lol

English gcses certainly don't have this, but i feel like the sentences are unnecessarily convoluted and while you are rewarded for accessing a higher range of vocabulary it would be viewed as excessive if used like the examples in this vid.

It's funny that even Korean students who do well on this English test would struggle to have a normal conversation with a native English speaker. I lived with a few Korean exchange students for a bit when I went to college/university here in the US. One of them was an exchange student from Seoul National University (SNU) - which is regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea. While the guy scored really well on this test when took it, he was unable to communicate well in spoken English. He often couldn't understand what native English speakers were saying, and the way he constructed his sentences was really awkward. The exam really is a poor assessment of students' English language skills; it basically assesses their ability to take a test, which is of no value outside of a schooling environment.

That's sorta what I was trying to point out in my comments. It tests university level comprehension skills. I can comprehend Spanish fine but were to ask me to speak it as my second language I sound like there's mashed potatoes in my mouth. I'll conjugate verbs wrong, mix up similar words, and make an utter fool of myself. Comprehension does not equal language mastery, unfortunately.

Most major books in English literature that one might read at a university level are not written with the kind of fluffy, bombastic phrasing that the Korean English test seems to use. The test is likely written by people who have never been to an English-speaking country or even stepped outside of Korea, and it shows. The test questions read like what a non-native English speaker thinks elevated English sounds like - high-sounding and verbose, but lacking clarity. There's really no value in training students to parse through obscurantist language like that, especially if they can't even master basic written and verbal English. Both the content of the test and the rationale behind it are deeply flawed.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It takes some practice to read scientific journals, but not ten hours of study per day for years. It feels like they take basic sentences, grab a thesaurus, and then substitute more obscure words for the common ones. Just...damn. I really feel for those kids.

@@soullessangel207 its because its not mandatory for us to take it all our life- only from grades 4 to 9. I chose to continue to take it, and there's kids in my class that are pretty much fluent because of earlier exposure and french immersion programs. But most people drop french in grade 9 and forget everything.

As an ESL teacher for 17 years I still get students who would speak this way. It sounds like a speech. I would often remind them that people/native speakers and people in general do not talk this way. It's hard to wean them off. As a matter of fact, many feels stumped when they try to speak normally.

@@simdawn633 정말 영어 뿐만아니라 모든게.. 그 학창시절 긴 시간동안 흥미와도 전혀 상관없고, 인성과도 상관없는 교과목을 배우며 시간을 다 날려먹게 만들고, 그만큼 시간 투자를 하더라도 상위 몇퍼센트에 들지 않으면 무용지물로 만들어버리는.. 결국 졸업 후 대다수 학생을 시스템의 약자로 만들어버리는? 그런것 같습니다. 중고등학교 6년이 짧은 시간도 아니고, 이 시간동안 자신이 정말 흥미있어하는 분야를 깊게 공부한다면 정말 엄청날것같은데.. 개선됐으면 좋겠네요 진짜 :)

많은 한국분들이 오해하시는게 수능영어 지문을 한국 영어교육과 교수 출제진들이 쓰는거라고 생각하시는데 사실 수능 지문은 외국대학(상당수가 미국대학) 교수들 논문이나 칼럼,기사등에서 문제로 출제할만한 단락을 발췌해서 출제합니다.발췌한 단락에서 한국교수진들이 어려운단어는 고교생이 이해할만한 어휘로 바꾸고 빈칸뚫고,순서 섞어서 순서문제 출제하고,요약 문제 출제하고 그렇게 문제를 한국교수들이 만드는거지 원문 글 자체는 외국대학 교수들 글이 대부분입니다.많은 외국인들이 한국 수능 영어지문보고 일상생활에서 잘 안쓰이는 글이라고 하시는데 당연한게 일상 생활에서 쓰이는 글이 아니라 외국대학 교수들이 쓴 학술적인 글들이 많으니 그런거죠.대학수학능력 시험에서 영어는 일상회화를 잘 하는 학생들을 변별하는게 아니라 대학교에 진학해서 영어로 된 원서를 얼마나 잘 이해하고 수학할만한 능력이 있는지를 평가하는 시험입니다.

아직도 많은 사람들이 착각하고 있는데, 저건 대학수학능력 시험이지 영어시험이 아닙니다. 대학수학능력시험은 대학교에서 학문을 수료할 수 있는 능력을 테스트하는 시험이고, 대학교에서 학문을 수료하려면 영어를 얼마나 유창하게 하느냐가 중요한게 아니라 외국 학자들의 원서를 얼마나 정확히 이해할 수 있느냐가 중요하거든요.

@@user-ff7es7ws7i 논문에서 쓰건말건 수능 지문은 차다리 논문처럼 논리의 흐름에 따라 전개하면 모를까 겨우 몇 줄 안에 전부 담을 수 없는 내용일 뿐더러 그렇기에 뜬금없이 맥락도 안맞고 단어도 이상한거 끼워놓고 짜집기해서 만들어진 개억까 지문이기에 문제가 있다고 생각해.

@111 11 영어 폐지하고 국어 시험도 국어가 아니라 언어논리로 바꿔야 한다. 애초에 수능 초기 계획에서 영어 있지도 않았고 영어 출제 목적도 대학 원서 독해 능력 배양이라는 건 수능 출제 기조 중 어디에도 나와있지 않다. ㅅㅂ논리력 타령할거면 그냥 국어 비문학+논리학 과목을 아예 따로 개설하거나 해서 해. 왜 쓰잘데기없는 배배 꼰 영어 지문으로 그딴걸 쓰냐? 당장 대학에서 저따구로 논문 쓰면 F맞고 강퇴고 회사에서 PPT할때 저딴 문장구조로 PPT하고 보고서에 박아놓으면 즉시 좌천이다. 알기는 함?ㅋㅋ

@@user-wb1ko3rr9f 그건 다른 얘기입니다. 한국 영어 시험 문제 많습니다. 싱가폴 거주자로 여기도 한국 만만치 않게 교육열 치열하고 사교육 많이 시킵니다. 영어 교육 한국이랑 정말 다릅니다. 일반원어민이 자기 모국어 시험을 어려워 하는 거랑 다른 문제에요.

미국에서 평생을 살다가 고등학교때 처음 한국 학교를 다녀보고 작년에 수능쳤는데 아직도 첫 영어 모의고사를 잊을수가 없어요.. 이게 뭐지 이게 뭐지만 남발했던,.. 그리고 상위권 대학교 가려면 사실 영어는 그다지 어려운 과목도 아니고 무조건 1등급 먹고 들어가야하는걸 알고나선 한국식으루 영어 공부 열심히 했네요.. 계속 하다 보니 회의감도 느껴지고 내가 지금까지 써온 영어는 뭔가 싶어서 많이 힘들었눈데 이 영상을 보니 진짜 수능식 영어는 문제가 많다는걸 다시 느끼네요.. ㅠㅜㅜ 어려울걸 알지만 하루 빨리 고쳐져서 학생들이 정말 필요한 영어를 배우는 날이 오면 좋겠어요 ㅠㅜ

The main reason why exams are like this in Korea is because there are a lot kids who want to go to a top university. They purposely make it difficult and confusing (but technically grammatically correct) in order to distinguish students who are ''better'' in English. It is literally an English puzzle. If the English exam was normal, there would be so many students who ace the test and it would be difficult to know who is ''better''.

수능을 가르치는 영어강사입니다만, 사실 한국의 수능 영어 문제는 단순한 단어 문제는 아니라 생각합니다. 첫째, 내용이 앞뒤가 안 맞아요. 원문을 제대로 이해하지 못한 자들이 분량을 맞추느라 제멋대로 짜집기를 하기 때문에, 인과관계가 안 맞는 경우가 허다합니다. 이건 출제자들이 제대로 된 글쓰기 공부를 해본 적이 없기 때문입니다. 둘째, 문법이 안 맞아요. 엄밀히 말하면 틀렸다기보다는 심각하게 어색합니다. 표현이 어려운 것과 표현을 잘못한 것은 엄연히 다른데, 그걸 구분하지 못합니다. 전치사의 의미도, 문장 속 문장의 이유도 제대로 이해하지 못하는 경우가 허다합니다. 중의적으로 해석 가능한 문장을 너무 좋아해요 이 자들은. "내 마음을 읽어봐"식이죠. 셋째, 상황에 안 맞는 단어가 너무 많아요. 역시 이 또한 분량 맞추느라 편집을 잘못하기 때문인데, 학술적 언어를 앞뒤 설명 다 자르고 이야기하곤 합니다. 원문을 보면 그 단어 하나 설명하느라 한 챕터를 쓰곤 하는데, 이걸 잘라먹으니 알 길이 없죠. 이건 한국의 대학교 실정을 잘 보여주는 것이기도 합니다. "나는 말하는 재주도 글 쓰는 재주도 없으므로 개떡같이 말할 테니, 알아먹을 수 있는 놈들만 내 수업 들어라"는 교수들의 태도지요.

기억은 반복의 문제이지 주입식 교육의 문제가 아닙니다. 자기주도 학습과 주입식 교육의 차이는 학생들이 스스로 찾아서 공부하려 하느냐 아니냐일 뿐이에요. 사람들이 착각하는게 주입식 교육으로는 활용하는 유형의 문제를 풀지 못할거라 생각하는 건데, 실제로는 활용이라 해봤자 기본에서 약간 비틀고, 또 거기서 꼬아버리고 그걸 뒤섞는 과정의 반복이기 때문에 오히려 주입식 교육으로 개념들을 우겨넣고 문제풀이를 반복하면서 익혀나가는게 문제해결력을 더 높일 수 있습니다. 이는 독일 사관학교에서도, 현행 중-고등교육 수학과정에서도 찾아볼 수 있는 사례죠.

American and Korean SAT exams are different from Brits SAT. The closest is to take both GCSE's and A-Levels but A level exams requires 2 years of study that are subject specific, unlike the SAT's which is comprehensive to your learning starting from high school. A levels are definitely harder and more mind numbing. I remember a math question I skipped and the question was, "Mr. Thomas was perpending on riding the 7:40am train, but decided to take the 8:12am train instead. It takes 48 minutes to arrive in his office and advertently gets delayed for 2 minutes around the 25 to 28 minute mark due to a haphazard zigzag road. If the bus driver speeds up from its usual 40km/hr to 50km/hr, would Mr. Thompson arrive before 8:56am or not? Explain."

Since I'm not good at math and does not memorize any equations whatsoever, I always try to solve it logically and inadvertently make a made-up equation of my own. Sometimes, I get the answers right, but that still doesn't apply since you need the actual equation and not just some theorized probability even if you got the answers right. I wish the Department of Education in our country acknowledged this kind of stuff. Beats me, maybe I just don't know I'm already making hard equations into easy and improvised versions of it.

AFAIK most of these texts are supposedly chosen by professors in Korean universities majored in English Literatures/English Education. Not all of those texts are written by them, actually, they are excerpts from news articles, novels, or even academic journals, so most of them are not translations. I am not sure if this is still the case since there have been several changes introduced last decade, but in its core they are not some translated text but somewhat written by English natives. Of course that does not prove they are well-written or well-suited for these kind of test. Another thing to be considered is that English in Korean education is not comparable to French or Spanish educations in English-native countries. Primary aim for these tests are to prepare students when they go to university. Most of the texts you need to study throughout university are written in English with highly sophisticated styles, so you actually need to read these kind of texts quickly during university to survive. So English is obligatory course up to 9 years in primary school to high school in Korea. KSAT sure do have other foreign language tests like French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, and so on, but they are not as harsh as these. I do acknowledge that these tests are ridiculously hard and stressful, and I am not trying to defend it at all, because I've been through all these. Heck, I even took depression medication on the KSAT year. Surely there would be much better way to do this, and I suspect that the way it is done is in its current form probably due to the cost to make this like TOEFL or something like that.

Then again, KSAT English test has some kind of difficulty curve throughout test, and there are much easier questions in the test, like much shorter sentences and much easier to pick answers that could be answered almost instantly. I believe these are the most hard questions, less than 6 questions per test if I remember correctly, and I think I took 2 minutes to read through one question.

So I looked it up and tried one of these Korean English tests. I tried 5 questions and got them all correct. What I noticed is it seems to be about comprehension. It reminded me a lot of reading tests I had in primary school. It uses complex words and stuff that you haven’t been taught but you work them out from context. I think I actually had reading tests very similar at about the same level at the start of high school. For a second language though, these tests would be hard. I’m sure English high school kids could manage it though.

제 나이또래 세대는 초4학년인가 5학년부터 영어수업을 시작했는데 그때 수업이 얼마나 재미없었는지 아직도 기억이 나네요...초등학교 저학년 때 따로 다녔던 영어학원에서는 영어회화 위주로 재밌게 가르쳤었기 때문에 그때만 해도 제가 영어를 재밌어한다고 생각했는데 초등학교에서의 영어문법 수업 이후부터 영어를 완전히 놓았습니다. 특히 고등학교 영어선생은 공부잘하는 학생들만 잘 가르쳐주고(그래봤자 수능영어지만) 나머지는 아예 대놓고 개무시를 하던 선생이었죠. 당연히 영어에 관심이 생길 일이 더욱 없었고요. 대학 들어와서 혼자 미드에 관심이 생기게 되면서 조금씩 감으로 영어를 알게됐고 문법을 정말 재밌게 잘 가르쳐주는 학원선생님 덕분에 흥미를 느끼면서 공부를 하다가 교내 지원을 받고 가는 어학연수 프로그램에 합격해 미국도 다녀왔습니다. 여기까지 돌이켜보니 제 영어공부에 있어서 학교가 도움을 준건 정말 단 한가지도 없더군요. 과연 이런데도 우리나라 영어교육에 문제가 없는것인지 의문스러울 뿐입니다.

나는 초등학교 3학년때 학교에서 처음 영어라는 걸 접했는데 너무 재미있었음 회화든, 단어든, 문법이든 다 좋았는데 영어가 딱 싫어진 시기가 고등학교때 3~4페이지가 넘는 영어지문 4,5개를 줄줄줄 외워야만 칠 수 있는 내신 시험이 너무 진절머리나서 영어 싫어짐. 진짜 이건 아니다 싶었음. 없던 외국어 공포증도 만드는 대단한 나라

It’s actually so sad that Korean kids have to go through this, I could not imagine. They just memorize stuff without learning anything. I’m currently an accounting student in the US and our tests are hard but we are tested on content that we’ll actually put to practice. Learning is journey, I really hope Korea changes their education system and creates an environment where students can actually like going to class and learning.

This is the reason Suicide rate is so high in Korea. And another sad fact is, their govt. is really proud of their education system because it created the oportunity for SO MANY Koreans to be in highest positions in international companies. It wasn't even close to this in 1950s. They consider it an important progress. What they won't even consider is that how many students are suffering mentally and physically. Simple logic "I suffered and worked really hard when I was student, why would young generation have it easy?" It's a toxic Asian Public sector mentality. Also, another fact is Korean Education ranking is higher than many western countries and they take pride on it.

Yep but in the end, it's all to go to a good university. Suffer for a couple of years, and we will have a better one after we become adults, or at least, that is the general thought here. The gov. is the problem. If you become a top student, then it is basically a status symbol. Schools are THAT important. If you went to a college in the countryside, then few people would employ you. Everyone works the absolute hardest they can because they want a job in the future. Even rich kids and etc aren't exempted. As I said before, your school is basically your status in life. It's sad, but all of us want to be employed, living happy lives.

The thing that they’re doing wrong in the video is that they’re actually reading the paragraphs. After going through some of these questions, you notice that about 50% of the paragraph is absolute nonsense that doesn’t help you in answering the question. Sometimes, the answer can be determined from one sentence. Therefore, you should be reading the multiple choice answers first and then skimming the paragraph. To study for this test, you aren’t studying English per say. You’re rather studying how to more efficiently take a test.

this is basically like the GAT/UCAT exam, there is a way of answering each question, you have to learn how to answer them with limited time. involves many hours of practise questions.

I am so glad this is not how we are taught English in our schools. English is a required language for us to learn from preschool. It is our second language (for some maybe 3rd), and almost everyone and anyone here can speak it, though some may not be fluent, but enough to understand in a conversation. I wish the Korean government or educational system can reform their English curriculum so that it will be more useful to their students.

I grew up with Hong Kong primary education and moved to the UK at age 10, and the convoluted formal style of English is the English we learnt! The emphasis was on grammar and (exaggerated) pronounciation. Things were much easier once I moved!

회화 실력을 늘리려면 영어권 원어민하고 직접 대화하는 방법 밖에 없습니다. 영어를 책이나 오디오로 공부한거 하고 대화하는 것은 생리학적으로도 뇌의 영역이 틀립니다. 직접 해보시면 본인이 금방 느껴집니다. 생각자체를 계속 영어로 해야 하고 즉각적으로 생각이 말로 바뀌어 입에서 나오도록 연습하는 방법 밖에 없습니다.

꼭 외국인과 대화를 해서 연습할 필요는 없다고 생각합니다. 물론 그게 제일 좋은 방법이겠지만 말하는 게 안되면 말하는 걸 연습하면 되겠지요. 가령 외국 드라마에서 배우들이 하는 말을 그대로 따라해본다던가 거기에 자기가 말 한 것들 그대로 녹음해서 자기 스스로 확인하고 뭐가 문제인지 파악하면 그걸로도 충분히 많이 늘 것이라 생각합니다. 작문도 마찬가지로 자신의 생각을 영어로 바꿔서 적다보면 늘겠지요. 다만 주의해야 할 점이 한가지 있는데 실력이 느는데 시간이 오래 걸린다고 해서 실망해선 안된다는 겁니다. 외국인이 한국에서 한국말 배우는데 1년이 지났는데도 말은 잘 알아듣는데 발음이랑 문장 구성력이 어눌하다고 지능이 떨어지나라고 생각하지는 않지요? 다른 나라의 언어를 배우는데 시간이 적게 걸리지 않는 게 당연한 거죠. 하물며 외국인들 사이에서 배우는 것도 아니고 혼자 독학하는 데 미숙할 수 밖에 없는 거니까 실망하지 말고 꾸준히 하다 보면 좋은 결과가 있을 겁니다.

My son got 100 on this two years ago. And he spent ALL his hours awake on studying different subjects for the Korean SAT. Ever since elementary school actually. Watching this video makes me sad and breaks my heart. He would have been so much happier and received so much compliments from his teachers. Here you hardly get any of such encouragement.I feel sorry for my three kids studying in Seoul. I wish I had loads of money so we could move to a country like England to actually enjoy life.

There are so many truly smart people that wind up feeling stupid because they didn't fit well in the one-size-fits-all education system. If that's you, don't be discouraged. Use that to fuel your desire and forge your own unique path in life, and that will show how broken and senseless the system is

I always knew that if I spent the time to study for a standardized test, using all the tricks and learning the patterns, a perfect score is achievable. I just was too lazy to cram like that when not cramming would yield a pretty good result anyway. I wasn’t trying to get into Harvard but for those people who are, a sufficient amount of time, probably also money for prep classes that just teaches strategies to pass exams, I’ve always found it to be pretty attainable. Like I said, I never studied and got good results so the thought of actually devoting time and effort into it made me think it wouldn’t be that hard.

김이강 물론 빠르게 지식을읽고 해석하는 능력'도' 중요합니다 하지만 말씀하신 배경지식이 크게작용할때도 있습니다. 올해 논란이 많았던 수능 국어 31번도 있고 EBS연계교재에서 읽었던 연계지문(천변풍경, 오발탄, 비문학 명제지문, 일동장유가)같은 것들을 공부하여 배경지식이 된 학생에게는 좀 더 이해하기 쉬울 수 있습니다. 비판적 사고 역시 수능에 존재하고 그부분은 오히려 평가원에서 강조하는 점이라고 볼 수 있습니다. 2019 6평 10번, 2018 9평 18번 2017 수능 19번등 과 같이 주어진 관점에 근거하여 비평하는 문항이 있습니다. 물론, 고3 수험생의 능력을 과대평가하고 낸 2019수능은 아쉬움이 있습니다. 하지만, 공부의 길을 선택한사람들에 한해서 그들의 학습을 받는 능력을 평가 하고 대학이 이를 참고할 수 있게 해주는 수능이라는 시험자체는 굉장히 잘 만든 시험이라고 생각합니다.

한국수능영어의 목적은 진짜 영어실력이 아니라 변별력을 주기위한 게임에 불과함. 왜냐하면 1등부터 꼴등까지 줄을 세워야하는게 목적이거든. 진짜 영어실력을 키우기위한 공부와 그것을 평가하는 시험이 아님. 그냥 평가원에서 만든 정말어려운 게임에 불과함 . 그 게임의 룰안에서 1등하면 좋은대학가는거고 꼴찌하면 안좋은대학가는거임.

왜 논문에서 따오는진 아시는지.. 대학다니시면 알텐데 보통 대학교재는 원서로 많이들 쓰는데 그럴때 논문단어가 필수적임. satiety 심리학에서도 자주 나오고 여러곳에서 나오는 전형적인 논문 단어. 그냥 논문 해석 능력 평가라 보면 됨.

수능 영어를 만들고 만들어왔던 대한민국의 교수진들은 어린 세대들에게 정말 큰 죄를 짓는 거임. 세상 좋아져서 네이티브들이 이렇게 객관적으로 말해주지 이 사람들이 없었으면 이런 영어가 얼마나 얼토당토 없는 영어인지 알 길이 있나. 상황이 이런데 한국의 영어 교육이 매우 크게 잘 못됐다고 제대로 목소리 내는 교수 한 명 없으니, 한국의 식자층이라는 분들은 정말 뭐하자는 사람들인가 싶음. 이런 영어 시험 고득점 받고 인서울 들어가는 대학생들이 과연 어디가서 영어로 토론이나 가능하나? 이 학생들 잘못이 아니라 이런 잘못된 교육을 시키는 소위 학자라는 사람들이 정말 문제임. 솔직히 웬만하면 비판하고 싶지 않은데, 이런 영어 지문은 아이들 순번 매기기 위해서 억지로 만들어 내는 지문이나 마찬가지... 왜 열심히 한 학생들을 슬프게하고 영어를 더 싫어하게 만들고 오히려 영어 경쟁력 없게 만드는지?... 차라리 토플 고득점을 목표로 공부시켰으면 좋겠음.

This absolutely shocked me. I can’t believe Korean teenagers are expected to be able to comprehend this absolute NONSENSE in less than a minute. I couldn’t imagine being a teen again and trying to deal with the stress of this. Does shine some light onto the subject of why Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Too much pressure and expectations. So very sad. 😔 Learning a new language regardless of what level, should be fun and enjoyed. Being able to communicate with people from a different culture through language is such a magical thing and to do this, is to take all of the enjoyment out of it. My heart genuinely goes out to the students that have had to go through this.

Many Different Things At what point in my comment did I say anything remotely racist? I’m sorry if what I said upset you, was not my intention. I was just stating that the English questions that the native Korean speakers have to answer are so incredibly difficult. As clearly viewed in the video, you can see highly educated native English speakers having trouble deciphering these questions. So expecting someone who regardless of their native tongue trying to figure these questions out in 60 seconds seems ridiculous. Maybe next time actually READ what someone has written before calling them a racist or anything of that sort. Spewing that type of garbage doesn’t look good on you. ☺️ P.S. make sure to let the authorities know about my previous comment if any mass shooting happen to a Korean community. @@seongkyungpark6900 지금 포커스가 다른듯. 목표가 대학입시든 뭐든간에 학교에서 하나의 언어를 배우는데 배워도 회화를 못하는 교육, 제도 자체가 무슨소용이 있냐는거. 언어과목이면 회화공부를하고 회화시험을 봐서 말그대로 제2외국어를 구사하는 방향으로 가야된다는 말임. 대학입시를 위한 수능에 외국어 문제가 저딴식으로 나오기때문에 저딴공부를 할수밖에 없는 지금 상황에서는 수능이 문제인거지. 그래서 댓님이 말하는게 교육이 잘못돼도 한참잘못됐다고 하는거.

@@user-cl5ly4yr5x 확실히 포커스가 다름. 일단 인문계고교는 대학을 목표로하는 고등학교인건 틀림없음. 그리고 대학은 국내연구뿐만이 아닌 해외연구등을 읽고 더 발전시키기 위한 인재를 원함. 회화가 되는 인재를 원하는게 아님. 그래서 영어교육도 독해위주로 하는거고요. 그리고 사실 서연고 애들 회화도 잘하고 수능영어로 배운거 잘써먹음. 위에서 찡찡대는애같이 뭐 독해도 못하고 회화도못하는애들이 배워서 회화도 못하는데 왜 이런걸 하냐! 하는건 그냥 인문계 고교 및 대학이 원하는 인재상을 모르는 그냥 입시란걸 이해못하는 사람인걸 혼자 증명한겁니다. 그리고 외국인들 제2외국어로 영어를 배우는게 아니고 영어를 외국어로 배우고 후에 제2외국어로 뭔가 하는건데, 걔들은 일단 입시라는거에 대한게 좀 달라요. 우리나라처럼 개나소나 미친듯이 대학대학 거리는게 아니라 공고 상고등 여러가지 고등학교 잘 이용해서 자기 먹고살길 찾고 굳이 대학을 안가서 대학 진학률이 낮아요. 그러니까 인문계를 가는애들은 그냥 공부도 잘하고 머리고 좋은애들이 많음요. 그리고 언어의 구성도 비슷하다보니 배움이 빠른점도 있는거임. 다른상황의 문제를 같이 보려고하니 댓님처럼 히한한 의견이 나오는거고 자기의 못난점을 공교육의 탓으로 돌리는거임. 한번이라도 공고 상고등의 다른길을 생각해보고 자신의 상태를 생각햇더라면 입시공부를 안햇을지도 모르는거임.

My English test had three different stages. First was somewhat of a multiple choice part - focusing on the different tenses, making us choose the correct words etc, this part also included reading, somewhat similar to this, but not as hard of course :). Then a speech part with a random topic you yourself pull out at a random - it was 5 minutes of non stop dialogue with one of the assigned teachers. And last part was again a randomly pulled topic - where you had to write an essay of either 350 or 500 words (can't remember now, it was like 13 years ago). All of this took place over 4 hours, Eastern Europe.

방금 수능 치곤 나온 학생으로써 정말 현타오네요..ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 사실 맞아요 지문을 읽고 이해한다기 보다 감이 사실 더 먼저입니다 항상 중간에 상반되는 이론 나와서 그게 글의 주제또는 빈칸인게 대다수라.. 되도않은 쓰지도않을 단어들 죽어라외우고. 단어+감.. 이게 뭐야..ㅠㅠㅠㅠ 그리고 국어 정말 너무했어ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ 진짜 어려웟어요ㅠㅠㅠ 화작문에서 다풀고 20분지난거 알고난순간 충격과 공포 그 자체였습니다...화작문에서 20분이라니... 덕분에 과학비문학 문제 하나날렸습니다 참 고오맙습니다... +제가 비문학잼병이라 보통 화작문에서 15분이내로 컷하고 그 나머지 단축한 시간 모두 비문학에 쏟아부어버리는 스타일인데 네 수능이 절 시험에 들게했어요..ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 과학같은건 원리이해하고 응용하는것때문에 좀 시간 오래걸리는 편인데 그래서 암튼 과학비문 2개틀렸더라구요^^ (나쁜말나쁜말 몹시 심한말) 영어는 어려웠다는게 아니라 그냥 풀면서 내가 지금까지 배워온 야매스러운 요령으로 푸는게 느껴져서 현타왔다는거지 뭐 망치지는않고 볼만큼 봤습니다 예..ㅎㅎ 수고했다고 댓달아주신분들 모두 넘나 감동... 다들 수고하셨어요:) 실기열심히해서 좋은대학가서 여기다가 또 글 추가하고싶네여 암튼 전 이제 연습하러 갑니다 감사합니당❤

Same problem as Vietnam. Our english education system focus mostly on grammar, pronunciation, stress but no coversation actually. I only learn how to comunicate until i go to university where teachers and friends all speak English and i have to respond in english.

I've been an esl teacher since 2016, and yes, they do understand the passage but conversing is really hard for them to do. And they always use difficult vocabs too which aren't used in daily conversation. Another problem, is that during their English class, they don't converse in English and do activities that will stimulate their skills in using the language

모든 비난을 영어 공교육으로만 돌릴 문제는 아니라고 봅니다. 공립학교에서 어학원식 ESL 코스를, 혹은 비슷하게라도 가르치려면 모든 학교에 영어가 모국어인 사람 혹은 모국어 수준으로 구사하는 사람이 필수적으로 필요하기 때문에 이 문제를 일단 해결해야 합니다. 더불어 한국에서는 일상생활에서 영어 사용 환경에 노출되는 경우가 많이 낮은 편이고, 그렇기 때문에 필요성도 낮지요. 유럽어와 달리 영어와 한국어/일본어 사이의 언어학적 거리도 상당히 멀고요. (영어가 모국어인 사람들이 러시아어, 히브리어, 힌디어, 태국어 를 습득하기 위해 걸리는 평균 학습 시간이 1100시간인 반면, 한국어와 일본어를 배우기 위해 걸리는 시간은 2200시간입니다.) 일상 생활에서 영어 사용 환경에 잘 노출되지 않기에 보통 사람은 영어로 의사소통을 해야 할 필요성을 크게 느끼지 못하며, 영어와 한국어는 서로 굉장히 다른 체계의 언어이기 때문에 훨씬 더 많은 노력을 필요로 하는 것이 주된 이유고, 공교육은 부차적인 문제 - 그렇다고 해서 지금의 영어 교육 체계가 무결완벽하다는 말은 아닙니다 - 라고 봅니다.

왜놈시대에 왜놈들의 문법위주의 영어 교육이 그대로 이어져 오고 있는 것이 원인. 그 전 조선시대 영어교육은 회화위주의 제대로 된 독자적인 교육이었다고 함. 당시 조선시대에 만든 영어 교재 보면 run 발음 표기를 “을러~언” 이거 보고 기가 찼다. 한글로 표시 할 수 일는 발음 표시로는 정말 최고라고 생각

True. These morons at Korea's education ministry probably think that insanely difficult tests = better education. I've spoken to many university students in Korea and very few of them could even help with directions. Their English tests are the equivalent of teachers trying to find the most difficult shit they can think of and shoving it down the students' throats. They are setting them up to fail. It's the most idiotic thing I've seen on such a grand scale. It's the same thing in Japan by the way. It's like trying to teach calculus to people who haven't even mastered basic arithmetic yet.

@@Unb0rnify the kids who are acing it have been prepared to memorize texts and ace this test specifically. If you throw them in a spontaneous english environment they probably wont do as well. Standardized tests like this one don't measure your intelligence, but your test taking skills

They do it because it a test for whether or not you can do academics at high level in English. When you read an academic paper, the whole point is that at the start of the paper you know nothing about the topic. Studying for this exam trains you to get past that and actually comprehend concepts that are alien to you. There's an exam called the GMAT in the UK and US that is a prerequisite for a lot of higher education, and the English portion of the exam is pretty much identical to what was in the video.

수능을 치진 않았지만 고등학교 인생의 절반동안 수능을 위해 달리고, 나머지 절반동안 영국 수능인 에이레벨을 위해 달려온 사람으로서, "imagine giving this exam to an english student studying french" 했을때 그 웃음의 의미를 알것 같아요, 웃기지만 슬픈 웃픈 현실이에요. 영국 교육이 무조건적으로 한국 교육보다 낫다고 하는건 아니고, 영국에서의 공부가 헐렁하다는 것도 아니지만 엄청난 시간을 투자해 의미없이 토시하나 빠짐없이 본문을 외우는 공부와 자기가 원하는 사랑하는 공부를 하는 시스템은 뿌리부터 다르기 때문에 많이 안타까운것같아요. 영국남자와 셜록을 보면서 영국에 가고싶다는 꿈을 키워 가족과 영국에 오게된지 어느덧 4년, 지금은 영국에 혼자 남아 대학을 다니면서 요즘따라 지치고 힘들고 한국에 가고싶었는데 영상보면서 한국에서의 치열하지만 친구들과 재밌었던 고등학교 생활 생각하면서 다시한번 힘을 내보려고요:) 영국남자 항상 긍정의 힘을 채워주는 영상 만들어주셔서 감사합니다! 보실지 모르는 제안이지만 영국/런던에 있는 유학생 대상으로 영상 컨텐츠 제작 해보시면 어떨까요?ㅎㅅㅎ 아무쪼록 항상 감사합니다 응원합니다❤️

I'm glad that you brought this up. I don't think this only happen in Korea but in China, Japan, and the least i know, my own country, Vietnam. Most students have no idea what's the point of "learning" these stuff, it wasn't for communicating but for competing and surviving. "The pressure adds nothing"
