I've shared some of my doubts in comments/video descriptions post-publication. I've also explored complements more in depth in my member-only playlist. kzbin.info/aero/PLfQSN9FlyB6Q9KcdNzhIsJBnkYq7Z4REy You'd be welcome to join even for one month to check out those lessons. 🙏

Hi Daniel. I'm glad this lesson was useful. I have some other grammar and writing lessons that native speakers may find useful. If you need to review the parts of speech for some reason, you can find a 3-part lesson in my grammar playlist. www.englishwithjennifer.com/students/yt-videos/ I know a number of native speakers have used my older videos on types of sentences to review basic structure. NOTE: I apologize for making a slip of the tongue twice towards the end. I said "sentence" instead of "subject." The pattern is subject + verb. This is the longest grammar lesson I made to date. I hope you'll take the time to watch the full lesson. Watch it in parts if you need to take breaks. :) Follow the links to related videos, too. You can click on the "i" in the top right corner to see my recommendations. UPDATE: December 2022 I've since modified my understanding and explanation of the SVOO sentence type. I've considered whether or not a prepositional phrase can actually be called the indirect object. It would be more accurate to simply consider the entire prepositional phrase as the second object without naming it the "indirect object." See my new lesson ditransitive verbs. Like you, I'm on an ongoing journey of learning! Thank you for allowing me to guide you and share my understanding as I continually aim to improve and refine it.

The sentence "I haven’t been practising" is not an SV (Subject + Verb) sentence in its simplest form. It includes auxiliary verbs and a present participle, making it more complex. Here’s the breakdown: Subject: I Verb phrase: haven’t been practising This structure involves auxiliary verbs ("have" + "been") and the main verb in its -ing form ("practising"). So, it's a Subject + Verb phrase sentence, but not a pure SV pattern.
@EnglishwithjenniferАй бұрын
To teach basic sentences patterns, I'd label it as SV. We can always break down a subject (noun phrase, for example) or a verb further if necessary.

Jennifer, could I ask a question related to subject verb agreement one of my students asked me whether to use a plural or singular verb in the following sentence : two eggs and a piece of cake ( is or are ) my breakfast . thank you in advance
@Englishwithjennifer7 жыл бұрын
If you have more than one thing, the subject is plural: Two eggs are broken. If you view all the items as one unit, the subject is singular: Two eggs with a slice of toast and some juice is my usual breakfast. This is true with numbers as well. How many people are coming? - I think 5 or 6 are coming. Oh, that's nice. 5 or 6 is fine. We have a small table. 8 would be too many.

Hi Jennifer, so the pattern SVC is the same as the pattern SVCC: Example: I am excited and I am excited about the trip. The first sentence is the pattern of S+V(Liking verb+ subject complement. The second one is the pattern of S+V+subject complement( which describes the subject)+ adjective complement( which explains the adjective).
@Englishwithjennifer6 ай бұрын
Not all sources agree on the role of prepositional phrases in certain combinations. In the end, it's just best to remember "excited about" as a collocation. But, yes, I see "I am excited about the trip" as SVCC. Subject + linking verb + subject complement + adjective complement. Sometimes complements are necessary, but other times they're there for clarification or more detail. For example, when I introduce myself, it would be weird to say, "It's nice" instead of "It's nice to meet you." The infinitive phrase is a necessary complement.

Some grammar can be picked up through exposure. Reading is key for this to happen. However, focused study of grammar can heighten awareness and sharpen accuracy. Practice tasks with teacher feedback allow a learner to apply what was learned. Those who haven't studied grammar may feel comfortable with conversation and may generally get their point across in every situation, but some errors may become fossilized. I encourage language learners to give attention to all skills for exposure and production (listening, reading, speaking, writing). I don't always teach grammar directly in my private and group lessons. Focused study is often something I use to address inaccuracies I hear in students' production.

Hi Edson. This was an experiment to see how we all handle a longer lesson. ;) In any case, it's something you all can come back to and watch in parts. Take care.

Hi jennifer. I think that everyone has to learn these patterns but after knowing how to speak. What i mean is that rules always come after. I know how to build a sentence without knowing these patterns. I think they exist to adjust the language like any language, but they are really useful

Yes, you need some language already to make sense of the patterns. Some grammar can be learned through practice and use. Other aspects need to be studied directly. It also depends on the learner. One method doesn't work for everyone. Thanks for reflecting on this.

Dear JenniferESL I do not object to learning or repeating things that need to be done so to. I can swallow my pride with ease. The thing is I'd rather do things all-inclusively in English . The Swedish in my sixth form , A-level, practice book doesn't get me triggered as does Finnish. TY. I also discussed this with my mother during her last weeks at the ward. I still manage this basic stuff.

Your knowledge of different languages has most likely sharpened your mind and given rich insights. Yes, there's value in repetition and review. Of course, it's only natural to desire some novelty as well!
