I got all 50 The interesting thing is how some of these idioms came to be. ''Show a leg'' for ''Wake up'' (for example) comes from the old days when, on a ship, the men had to get up to work but the ladies could stay in bed, so ''showing a leg'' literally told the person waking people up what sex you were.

@MrMousley Wow, congratulations on scoring 50/50! That's impressive! Thank you for sharing the interesting origin of the idiom "show a leg." It's fascinating how language evolves and how historical contexts influence idioms. Indeed, many idioms have intriguing backstories that give us a glimpse into past customs and practices. 47 this time. I answered golden handshake correctly, but in US it is often referred to as golden parachute. This is usually for a CEO who was forced to resign though. I correctly answered feeling yellow as nervous, but I usually associate yellow as cowardly. One of the three I missed was blowing off steam. If I think about it, I can see relaxing would work, but I answered exercise. I picture blowing off steam as being really angry or stressed and doing something strenuous like lifting weights, punching the bag. or chopping wood to actually blow off steam. Sitting on a lawn chair on a white sandy beach would literally be relaxing or recharging your batteries, rather than an example of catharsis, i.e. blowing off steam.

Hello to everyone! Does the word "seldomly" exist? As far as I know, only "seldom" (an adverb) is used in the English language.
@thelighthouse13Ай бұрын
@АлександраШкурина-л4я Hello and a warm welcome to the channel! I'm so glad you joined the conversation. You're absolutely right in pointing out that "seldom" is the more widely accepted form, and it is indeed an adverb. While "seldomly" does occasionally appear in usage, it is considered non-standard and is much less common. Stick with "seldom" for correct and formal use. Thanks for raising such an insightful question, and I hope you enjoy exploring more content here!
