I’d like to think that most Americans would get these all right because they are sooo basic and it is multiple choice so they’ll recognize the right answer. Start asking people things like who wrote the Declaration of Independence and you’ll have a real mix of people that know and people that don’t even know who we declared independence from. That said, I fear some people would get even these basic things wrong. When I was a kid i got into an argument with another student in our typing class because the kid was insisting there were 52 states when you include Hawaii and Alaska. We asked the teacher to settle it and she said he was right. This was a teacher of children.

Ask Brits to name as many US states as they can, then ask Americans to name as many English counties as they can. (50 states, 48 counties - seems a fair challenge) I expect most Brits could name at least half and I'd be amazed if Americans could name half a dozen.

I think you’d have to include Northern Ireland because that is the distinction between the United Kingdom and Britain. Britain are the three countries on the island of Great Britain (Wales, England and Scotland) but the United Kingdom are those three plus Northern Ireland. But I think you raise an interesting point. Is Northern Ireland by itself a country given the history as to how it became separated from the rest of Ireland and thus never joined the Republic of Ireland when it was formed. I think you’d have to say yes, it is a country as much as Scotland and Wales are. It has its local government and its own cultural identity.
