Hi Gill 👋 May I ask that you do teaching in any academy or educational institution in the UK? My niece is planning to go to Britain this year and willing to physically attend your language sessions if hopefully there will be such an opportunity. I admire your great work over English teaching and I will be grateful for any information to help my niece learning from you 😊

I am very happy to have a chance to read the sonnet 27, which is among the poems in the small blue book I purchased at a gift shop in Stratford-upon-Avon! This small sonnet book has been on my bookshelf untouched for a long time. Today, thanks to Gill-sensei, I took the book from my bookshelf and found this sonnet. I don't think my English proficiency is enough to appreciate fully the beauty of the sonnet, but I find this sonnet captivating! Thank you for this good video!

Very interesting topic! The structure of 14 lines and 10 syllables stays the same as in the spanish sonnet, but the rhyme has a different pattern. In spanish it was normally ABBA, ABBA, CDC, DCD. Nice to learn some literature, and that is a beautiful poem!

Wonderful poem and class. In my opinion all classic authors describe universal situations which have validity through centuries. I think that the first line, when Shakespeare says: ...I haste to my bed, is related with lines 11 and 12, which contain the key words: ghastly, black and old. I think he means, in other words: despite the ugly and dark night that I know is awaiting for me, I go to bed in a hurry to dream, without sleeping, with you. That's really love in a marvellous poet's soul. Sorry if I've disturbed you.

Hi Gill, just found this on internet which could back up what you've just explained. Sonnet 27 in modern English: Weary from travelling, I hasten to my bed - that welcome place of rest for limbs tired out from travel. But then another journey begins in my head that puts my mind to work after my body’s work has ended; because my mind begins another, arduous, trip, from far away from home, to where you are, keeping my drooping eyelids wide open. It makes them stare at darkness, as blind people do, except that my imagination makes me see your image, that hangs like a jewel in the black night and makes it beautiful, transforming its old face to a young one. Look, now! Because of you, neither my limbs by day, nor my mind by night, enjoy any rest.

@Davgil I would first of all like to point out that I am not really a poetry lover and just happened to come across Gill one day on KZbin however I’ve just re-read your sonnet and here are my thoughts. I am, by no way, an expert in these manners but as you say, I’m a native. 100% British, but living in France since 1981! 1. I agree with you; ‘foolish’ is better than ‘stupid’. 2. I would leave ‘breach the dissimulation’ 3. You’re quite right, we would pronounce sylvanite like ‘night’ so at the end, why not: “Yearning to praise and greet, our sweet, honest Oasis of secrets, sharing her knowledge Unfolding the treasures of the British language!”

Hello, Gill. I really appreciate your nice lesson. I always watch your classes, they are all interesting and helpful. May I suggest you dedicate more of your teaching time on Engvid to Shakespeare's plays and poetry?
