vangrails hehe, I think we should try to distinct them by this way. /ae/ is tense vowel sound ( using facial muscle). /e/ is lax vowel sound ( just use throat). In this video She use too much /e/ for /ae/, so it is diffcult for us, who are learning English as second language, to distict. I mean using more /a/ when saying /ae/
@vangrails

Sure we all hope that native English speakers pronounce the /ae/ more like an /a/ so that we can hear the difference but the problem is that they don't do that.

To most people in the world these sounds are indistinguishable. I can barely hear the difference, it's incredibly subtle, but the real torture comes when I use these words and I never know which one of the the native speakers are hearing me pronounce.

@@rina.1799 Point is that this two sounds are similar and different people can have not only different accents but different articulation also. So one native speaker can pronounce the first sound the same way as another native would pronounce the second sound. And I consider this as the weakest part of English language. In comparison with Russian language, common hardly drunk Russian still sounds way more clear than sober native English speaker.

The æ is literally something between "a" and "e". Try to say them both at once(start with "e" flowing into "a") and you'll get the sound. It's slightly softer than just "e".

That's because she barely pronounces them differently. I'm a native English speaker and it's difficult for me to tell the difference in the way she pronounces them. There is definitely a difference between the short 'e' and short 'a' but she does not pronounce them clearly at all.

Para os brasileiros que não entenderam a diferença, é simples. Por exemplo: Quando for æ: Bad= béad( o som do a aparece logo após o som do é, e a boca se alonga para baixo). Quando for e= Bed= béd ( o som claramente é mais curto, só será ouvido o som da vogal "é", sem o "a", e a boca se abre pouco).

@@rafaelelorriaga2386 E sem contar se a palavra que voce está dizendo não estiver "stressed" , então o som do ae em "and" poderá ser basicamente o som de N, quando nativo fala rapido fica dificil de notar a diferença entre esses sons, English is a stressed-based language then that´s why the "schwa" sound is one of the most important sounds to master if you´re a non-native english speaker, then this whole vowel ae and a difference is thrown out of the window depending on the case of course.

Não são dois sons diferentes, a vogal /æ/ é só um som, uma vogal. /ɛa/ é outro som. Um jeito q eu explicarisa seria: para fazer o som do /æ/ é só fazer som de /ɛ/ (é) mas com a boca em posição de fazer um som de /a/

i hear the diference bit u know, when we were learning that in school, we just used one sound, because in fact it is almost same but i actually do a diference uncousciously sometimes... Sometimes not. For me, as Czech speaker it just seamed like u took our sound for a and made it little more similar to e. we make a sound as in "ask" od "car" word. I believe most foreign people dont care about that, only nativee speaker. But it still can ve pretty easy for you as you recognise that a in that video is just hybrid between e and normal a like in "aquarium" for example.

At the minute 6:42 when pronouncing the article "the" in the sentence "The elephant kept..." why is she pronouncing it /ðə/ instead of /ði/ ?? Isn't it that when you want to emphasize the following word or when the following word starts with a vowel (as in the "e" for "elephant") you should pronounce the article "the" as /ði/ ? Hope anyone can help a bit here. Tnx. Btw, congratulations for the channel. Very well produced and nice teachers.
@Morphimus
@Morphimus 9 жыл бұрын
ReParkerPlolz Yes, she should be pronouncing it /ði/! She is likely pronouncing it otherwise because of a dialectical deviation that I believe originally stemmed from poor overall education in the region she is from. My hometown is full of other such irksome dialectical quirks, such as pronouncing water as /wʊdr/. These sorts of minor (and technically incorrect) changes in grammar or pronunciation are common across the English-speaking world, particularly in the U.S.

Hahah. Eu consigo identificar, mas ai fiquei posha muito difícil perceber em um conversação ou até na hora de falar, ai que me toquei algo que poucos professores dizem a respeito de pronuncia, na verdade o que vai fazer mais diferença é na acentuação da vogal entende, não somente se a vogal é curta ou longa, mas sim acentuação. fica a dica

Hi Molly :) I would love to see a video in which you compare all these words: "bet", "bat", "but", "bar", and "bot". For my ear they all sound similar to each other, and thus it is difficult to pronounce them distinctively (I mean the vowel sounds).

Thiago, sou professor de inglês e percebo esta dificuldade entre os alunos brasileiros. O problema é o hábito já muito enraizado do brasileiro colocar som de "é" quando existe a letra "a"' na palavra. Por isso fica difícil perceber qualquer diferença. Acostume-se a pronunciar a letra A com o som de "a" como na língua portuguesamesmo...isso seria mais próximo da pronúncia britânica.

Roman Brazhnikov It is like the middle between our sound for a and e. I am Czech, also slavic and it is possible to recognise that, se was never learning that diffrence in english class, But you can easily hear it, it is just something which shows diference between foreign and matice speaker But i think it is not important in fact.

She got a light different pronunciation for the standard version of "æ", sounds like Michigan stuff. She says that like "ɛə". That's okay with me, but I'm sure it makes things less clear for English learners.

Rodolfo Henrique Ferreira sim meu caro é uma pronúncia clássica americana! Principalmente antes de N o A curto é pronunciado quase igual o E curto só que com um som de shwa virando um ditongo! "Man" é pronunciado "méan"! O A nesse caso depois de "é" é um schwa um som de vogal fraca que se assemelha ao "Ã" de manhã só que menos nasal e mais fraco com a boca semi-aberta
