Yes, it's hard when slowing down speech to make it sound exactly as it should when it's at a faster, normal pace!! :)

Yes, that would be a nice linking ending consonant to beginning vowel example.

When I say your two examples, my lips lightly make both positions. Remember that B is a stop consonant, and doesn't have to be released. Hope this helps!

That works. You will also hear natives reduce the vowel in 'do' to the schwa sound: Wuh-duh-yuh want?

Hi Bobbie, remember, it's always a choice. So there isn't just one right way. I think I would always link THAT to ACCENT. So for #2, yes, I would link that, but some people might make a more clear CH, which would separate it somewhat from 'accents'. Usually in a thought group we do link. So, I think it would be very natural to link OF and ENGLISH. (I recently did a video on the reduction of 'of' and linking. Did you see it?) Best, Rachel

Yes, you will sometimes hear -ing pronounced as -in'. It's ok in some cases, but if you do it all the time it will not sound like the standard American accent.

Really well done. I'm recommending these to my students at all different levels. I love that you have such a neutral (American) accent. I've listened to so many others who are great teachers, but have pronounced regional accents.

Hi, native American speaker here :P Not that I'm trying to steal Rachel's job, but I think I can help answer your question! 1. "That" and "accent" put together would sound like "thadaccent", because in American English, when a "t" is between two vowel sounds it becomes a "d". 2. Yes, it'd sound like "frenchaccents" when spoken. 3. It would sound like "uhveenglish", with a "v", since "of" is actually pronounced with a "v" at the end instead of an "f". I usually say "lotta" (lahdduh) for lot of :P
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 12 жыл бұрын
@arthurrr2006 In "what's up" -- the T is not between two vowels (it is part of the TS consonant cluster). In "what's it" it's the same, at TS sound. But in "what is it" -- without the contraction, the T in what is now between two vowel sounds, so it will most likely be flapped by a native speaker.

Thank you! I think you are one of the best English teacher on youtube. I speak Swedish and moved to America 9 months ago, at first it was so hard for me to speak English at all, but thanks to you and being around native speakers it is getting easier for me every day! But I have still big troubles to pronounce some words.. Like near, fear, girl, really, horror, mirror. It is like it is not possible for my my mouth to make those sounds. Help!

Just a note - turning a final t into a d when linking is not English - it's American. When linkiing those sentences in english English, the 't' stays a 't' sound. It is one of the key differences between the two dialects.

My heartiest coigratulations Rachel for all the detailed explanations you always give to your students. I always have enjoyed a lot your lessons. However, there is a failure, according to my point of view: the closed caption has been changed to Spanish and it is a mistake because what we need is English everywhere. Closed caption in English makes you think and understand in English while Spanish C.C. makes you slow down your progress and speed of answering and understanding. Would there be a chance to go back to English C.C., please?

@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I actually didn't contract "what is" into "what's" in "what is it" - because I did pronounce the 'is' I used the Flap T to link 'what' and 'is' together. In "What's up?", I'm contracting 'what' and 'is' together and eliminating the vowel sound. Because of that I will use a Stop T.
