Hi Lucy, I'm a 62 year old Canadian Man. My Grandmother was from Wales, and I've lived and worked throughout the English speaking world. Your videos have helped me in an unexpected way. Because of my connection with all three cultures. I've changed my business vocabulary to exclude UK based words and phrases when speaking to US colleagues. I'm an American living in Alabama. We refer to burner portion of the appliance as the "stove." The "oven" is the portion below the burners behind the door. 🙂

Love the differences! I'm from Nigeria, and we call egg plants, garden eggs. That's because we mostly grow and eat the small whitish type of them. Don't know the origin of that name, but I'm guessing it's because they have the shape and look of an egg, and well... they're grown and harvested.

We do use autumn and autumnal in American English. Many people say fall but everyone would know what youre talking about if you say autumn. Its also a common name for a girl. Stove and oven have been discussed in the comments but we also call it a "range." A range is an oven and stove top that is one unit as compared to an oven and countertop cooktop sold separately.

Here in the US, Trolley refers to a type of bus that runs on a track and cable. Fall season can be called autumn here also. We use the word biscuit also,. But low in sugar more cake like and eaten during a meal. Where a cookie is high in sugar and eaten as a desert or a treat. THE oven is a enclose portion where you bake your food. The stove is the top (open portion) of the appliance where you use pots or pans to cook with.

I've lived in the USA for almost 4 years and acquired American accent, then I returned to Russia and continued study English, but the British English. Now my accent is mixed and it's only just recently did I realise that I like British English pronunciation much more than American. Have a small comment regarding stove/oven. In America, stove is the top cooking surface while oven is for baking/broiling, the larger space under the stop top... I would disagree that the word "oven" is always used to describe where pots go when cooking, frying or warning something.

In the last few days, I watched videos and searched for other content about British vs American English. It was really useful, thanks for it! As a Hungarian (so compared to the Hungarian language), I can say that American English is much more logical, understandable and easier than British - talking about meaning, spelling, and pronunciation. Over my life I have lived in various parts of the U.S.A. and have always called the appliance used to cook a stove, with the baking/broiling portion being called the oven and what the Brits call a hob being called the stovetop. I am quite dissapointed to see that you opted to collaborate with the lady that often doesn't know how to pronounce words properly, makes simple mistakes, yet dares instructing people. For example. Marina uses word 'handful' instead of 'a handful', saying that 'handful' means many, whereas 'a handful actually means ' a few', not 'many'. Neither Marina knows that ' Why HAVE NOT anyone told me' is wrong, nor she is aware of the fact people usually MAKE a bit of an effort, not 'take an effort' to polish their English before starting a KZbin channel for language learners or launching a course. Thank you Kevin and Liza from @English for Everyone with Kevin and Liza for pointing that out. There is a good dozen videos dedicated to Marina's grammatical and pronunciation mistakes. I loved this class, when I was at school I had a good English level. Then 15 years have passed and one day I wanted to start over and I didn’t understand anything. As an American, I would say a stove is something that you cook on (on the stove-top), however, you stoke it with wood, and it also heats your home. It’s rather old school compared to today’s modern homes. It’s like a furnace that you cook on top of. NOT an oven.

In American, toilet is the porcelain device only and not a room. In American houses, the toilet was traditionally in the same room with the bath. So, to use the toilet you had to go to the bathroom.

In American English, “stove” refers to cooking, usually when using a pot or a skillet, while using a burner element of some kind, either gas or electric and mounted on a horizontal surface. It generally doesn’t pertain to a particular brand of appliance. An “oven” is a box like appliance with doors that open and uses indirect heat of some sort.

I will never forget the day I was in the U.S. Navy and we were in the Virgin Islands, and a guy from either Ireland, or Scotland, I assume, asked me a question. I was with 2 of my friends when a guy walked up to us and excitedly asked us a question. I looked at my friends and they had a deer-in-the-headlights look, and I so I looked back at him and said, "Excuse me?" He happily rattled off his question again, so I looked at my friends again, and said, "What language is that?" He got mad, turned red in the face, and literally spitting, he said, "It's the Queens English, ya bloody git!" I laughed, looked at my friends and said, "That I understood." So I looked at him and said, "The Queens English you say?.......I've heard the Queen speak......She doesn't sound like thaaaaat." He rolled his eyes, while my friends were trying hard not to laugh. So then I asked him if he could ask his question again, a little slower. He rolled his eyes again, and then dramatically, slowly asked his question again...he wanted to get a tour of our ship, but called it a boat...a boat...but his accent made it sound like "booit." Like BOOT, but with an IT at the end. So I don't know if that's Ireland, or Scotland. It could be a suburb of London for all I know.

@@soumyadipbanerjee6744 Americans don't often encounter other accents as much as the rest of the first world nations, so we, as a group, don't often learn to understand them even when they're speaking English.

Up until a few years ago, I never knew there were two pronunciations of the word “Lieutenant”. I’ve known it to be pronounced as “Loo-tenant” for the longest time, and then I watched this let’s play of a video game with British voice acting and they pronounced it as “Lef-tenant”

It seems to me that it's unfair to invite Marina for such kind of lesson. It would have been more interesting to invite a native speaker. Marina is definitely good at English but she's not qualified enough to teach American English.

Lucy I learn english from your channel so much! English is not my 1st language but I still have a normal accent, although I do pronounce some words wrong and yeah! And I think its really a good way to learn english by asking people from other countries on how they speak english :D

As a translator, whenever I see 'escola pública' (public school in the US sense) I always translate it as 'state-run school', as you never know who will read the text. (I'm British by the way, so for me a public school is Eton, or Harrow)
