Throughout my career it's always been so rewarding to see people go on to do amazing things just because they were able to pass the first hurdle of English. ☺️

Pronunciation and accent is such a funny thing. There are so many accents in the UK. I used to know a lady who could identify the town or region a person was from just by listening to them talk for 10 minutes. Nowadays, people move from city to city, so it's much more difficult to do this. I love the Brazilian Portuguese accent, because I find it so much easier to understand than the accent from Portugal. I remember when I went to Portugal on holiday for the first time. I was so confident I would be able to understand them....but no. It was a disaster! 😕

Years ago, I had such a wonderful student from Russia with the same name as you. Whenever you leave a comment and your name pops up, it reminds me of her! 🙂

My native language is Spanish. I speak English every day at work and with friends, but I need to improve and to become a fluent speaker. I keep forgetting some prepositions and pronunciation. Thanks

I think it's safe to say that most people would agree with you - prepositions are a nightmare. There's a great expression: 'the bane of my existence / the bane of my life' It means something (or someone) that is a constant source of irritation, annoyance, frustration. For example: [noun] + [verb be] + the bane of my life. Scammers calling 'from Microsoft' to tell me my computer has a virus and I must pay them to fix it immediately is one of the many banes of my life at the moment.

When I was at primary school, one of my best friends was from Sri Lanka. I thought she used to doodle flowers on the cover of her notebooks. Then, she explained it was her name! Sinhala has such a pretty script. 🌸

When I studied french as a child, I had a very strict teacher with a strong Parisian accent. Then, as a teenager, I moved to Ottawa, Canada. Wow the Quebecois accent shocked me. French is spoken in so many countries. What accent do you have? And what do you think of the other french accents?

I am sorry to hear you are feeling so discouraged. I always recommend the same thing to students at all levels: Think about the order of your activities. You cannot speak or write about something that you have not prepared for. Step 1: read about a topic- take your time. Look up vocabulary. Make notes. ◾ Think about this as your ‘research phase’. ◾ If you can listen and read at the same time, this will help you with pronunciation. Step 2: read the same text out loud. Practise reading slowly and quickly. ◾ Speaking requires muscle memory: your brain needs to remember the words and access them quickly. Your mouth needs to remember how to produce the sound and do it automatically. Reading out loud will help you form this muscle memory. Step 3: write! ◾ Write your opinion, or write a summary, or just write a few sentences. It doesn’t matter what you write, as long as you do it regularly. For example, after watching a video on relative clauses, you might want to try writing a few sentences using this same grammar structure. For example, “I read a news article that was about a person who…” ◾ If you don’t have an English teacher to help you correct your writing, ask ChatGPT for feedback. Prompt: “As an English teacher, please correct the grammar in my sentences. Explain the mistakes with grammar rules and more examples.” Step 4: record yourself ◾ People naturally speak to themselves in their head, but that is not going to help your muscle memory. So, imagine you are talking to a friend. Tell them about the article you read. Try to add lots of detail. Don’t make it perfect, because you will do better tomorrow. ◾ Record yourself and save the files so you will have a record of your improvement. It will be very motivational later. Optional: listen to someone talking about the same topic - it will be easier to understand because you read about the topic and have vocabulary and ideas. This is very important if you are going to do a language exam. You can follow this up with a short summary. Anisa…I don’t have time to do all this! Yes, you do. You can do this in half an hour every day. ◾ Choose a short text (5 minutes to read it and enjoy a tea/coffee at the same time) ◾ Repeat, repeat, repeat (5 minutes to read it - if it was short, this will be enough time) ◾ Don’t write a full essay (set a timer on your phone of 5 minutes. Then an extra few minutes to review with ChatGPT) ◾ Record yourself (5 minutes is a long time - you will probably only need 2 minutes for this part!) These are a couple of great sites to try: breakingnewsenglish.com/ (news articles at different levels with listening - slow, fast,UK,US - as well as vocabulary exercises) www.elllo.org/ (grammar and listening at all levels, and you can search by accent) Sorry for the long answer! Let me know if you have any questions. Anisa 😊
