As a non-native but as a professional linguist and, more importantly, a teacher of English, I often work with students who ask me to tell them about the main pronunciation differences between BrE and AmE. Lucy's pronouncing simple words with the two main accents of English looks pretty much the same as the thing I do at my classes, with the explanations and descriptions of the sounds being quite similar, too.

Thank you for the helpful video. I have been living in the UK for two years now, I think in metropolitan cities of the UK the Asians, South Asian, Arabs, Eastern Europeans, and the Mediterranean who live in the UK have had adopted a different pronunciation style in addition to the Native Speakers varies in pronunciation which make it a bit confusing, sometimes. I’m a very standard, midwestern American English speaker who now lives in the south. A new phenomenon in American pronunciation is in the word “important.” For many, all pretense of the first “t” is completely lost, as the sound has been replaced by a very overt “d” sound. For some, the first “t” has become a glottal stop, as if trying to imitate Dick Van Dyke’s Cockney accent in “Mary Poppins,” (“impor-ant”).
@robertmartens78393 ай бұрын
I loved that movie

Great job with the American accent, Lucy! Your students might be confused when they hear the non-rhotic American accents like in Boston, New York, and my New Orleans. We don’t pronounce the “R’s” found in the names of our own cities, so they end up sounding like New Awlins and New Yawk. It’s impossible to write it out exactly like it’s pronounced in these accents though. Great video!
