Life Expectancy: 11 - 15 years
Known as "the moderate setter," the graceful English Setter's love of people and easygoing nature can make him a super friend for an active family as well as a fine hunting dog. He's not as rollicking as the Irish setter nor as standoffish toward strangers as the Gordon Setter. Gentle, kind, and affectionate, he's devoted to his family, sociable with strangers, and gets along just fine with kids.
While he isn't precise enough to achieve the highest scores in obedience competition, he is moderately easy to train. The English Setter is a good watchdog and will bark to alert his people that someone is approaching the house. Once he's introduced to guests, however, he happily accepts their presence. All these qualities make him a good choice for a first-time dog owner who appreciates this breed's beauty and sweetness and can provide him with the exercise he needs.
English Setters are quiet indoors, but outside they love to run and play with other dogs and people. A daily run, off-leash play in a fenced area, or an energetic hike through a nearby park or wilderness area will be just this English breed's cup of tea.
While he's generally mild-mannered and sensitive, the English Setter can be a little willful. Counter that tendency with a kind but firm training from early puppyhood, and set boundaries so he knows exactly what you expect.

My English Setter, Sophie is 13 years old. The video nailed the breeds disposition: intelligent, friendly, affectionate, athletic, mellow, attention hungry, slow learner as puppy (eventually responding to gentle persuasion, especially when the activity turned out to be fun), occasionally stubborn and strong-willed, gregarious and not well disposed to long or lonely hours. Although I am her Alpha, she has been a fantastic family dog and knows all of the childrens' names. When they were little Sophie could locate them by name. Her eyesight and hearing remain sharp. Teaching a setter to "walk" is a chore, because they are working dogs by nature.

Out of all the dogs I've had, my first dog was the smartest. It was an English Setter of exceeding quality that my dad found from a local hunting dog breeder for me when I was 8. He was smart enough to undo a carabiner consistently. He was bird obsessed, absolutely crazy about anything winged. An absolute hunting machine. He was extremely athletic, I saw him leap and grab low flying birds out of the air, mid flight. I can only imagine what an amazing dog he would've been if I had him now, with my current experience training dogs. One time on a walk he protected me from a large aggressive German Shepard that came out to attack (which he almost killed btw). RIP Rusty, you were 1 in a million dog.

I had an English setter named Finn, he was 13 years old and I got him when I was ten months old. Your video really the nails intelligence, stubbornness, and kindness of the breed. Finn was the sweetest dog and lived to the ripe old age of 13. He was always out hunting with me and my dad and was nice to all people, he loved other dogs and never barked unless there was something seriously wrong. He was my best friend and he died this September rip Finn 2008-2021

I have 5 and have found all of them to be fast learners. They can be stubborn but you can easily train them to listen and obey. Best breed I have ever had!

I have lived English Setters for 40 years. Hunters and non-hunters. The video mostly nailed it. Very much people dogs, incredibly athletic. I have 3 females currently. The best dang dogs around and so beautiful.

The video nail Buddie. my 5 yr old service helper! I go everywhere with him. I love his laid back attitude. He is wonderful with ppl, notices when something is not right, quite protective. I enjoy my friend, he's been a pleasurer to have brought him to our home. Its much his home as the rest of the family. Learning he was what I expected I didn't find him a challenge has I have with some others. Guess I have been lucky. Thank you for your video.

Our English Setter is named Eden and she's the sweetest - we adopted her when she was 8 monts old. She's now 3 years old and she's a great addition to the family ! She goes along really well with our old 3 brittanies. She's incredibly intelligent : she's able to open doors, she has once pulled a sofa to climb on it because we had hang a ham and she also opened a glass can of feta to eat. She needs a lot of attention, she barks a lot at everything and I love her 💛

My girl is an English setter. She’s a little over a year old and this hits the nail on the head. She is EXTREMELY stubborn and points at animals and birds without even being told to. Now that she’s getting older the mischievous streak has kind of ended and she has calmed down quite a bit.

I’ve had two English Setters. The first was named Tekoa. He lived to be over 13 years old before hip displacia made life too unbearable for him. I new pup, Jak, is now a little over 2 years old. He is a Lewellyn. This video pretty much fits my dogs. They are very much a gentleman’s dog. Both are predominantly inside pets but both loved to be out and about on the farm. They loved to ride. Jak loves to ride in the tractor cab while I’m working. When he steps out, the nose is up in the air.

I own one of these dogs myself but he was part of a litter that was abandoned. He is a treeing walker coonhound as well. Another excellent hunting dog. Funny story tho he doesn’t match up very well with the general description of a normal English setter. He does not like other dogs or cats. He does not like kids. Not motivated to run unless there his specific people encouraging him to exercise. Now I will say he is very stubborn!? But wasn’t a slow learner, I believe it was harder to train my recently passed dog Honeybear. Which she was a pure bred Australian Shepard. So watching a lot of these fun facts of a setter is really got me wondering what has my family done wrong in order to get a very different individual in this almost repeating type of breed. They all seem to follow this guideline and my dog is very off spectrum of a normal English setter.

I have shared life with some 20 or so setters in a professional working situation. My current bitch is in pup, aged a little over 2 1/2 years. She has been the fastest learning setter i have ever had. I love this breed but it's a breed that requires a dedicated owner with the ability to learn from the dog to be able to give them the quality of life they deserve.

Unfortunately, my english setter was already an adult when we got her and she was somewhat neglected by her prior owners, but learned quickly. However, she is more of a couch potato than any other dog I've ever had and her play is more of a little bit of carrying a toy around before laying down to watch people. When I got her, she would try to hunt animals in the yard, but then stopped after a few months when she realized we were feeding her regularly...and it took longer for her actually eat a normal amount to the point where we had to add things to bribe her to eat the food the vet recommended...and still doesn't always eat all of her meals. She also has a fear of tile, wood, and other floors with a similar texture and won't cross them unless she needs to where she finds the path with the shortest distance between them while almost crawling as she goes. Something that we've tried repeatedly to get her over and it doesn't seem to work.

I am currently trying to help homeless settters in Montenegro where people there are terrible to pets. Hunters dump them and they starve on the streets. Can these dogs survive out in the elements?? I’m worried

A very beautiful breed of dog. I have two English Setters and I love them very much. For Russia this is a rare breed. I respect people who love animals. But unfortunately, many animals today suffer at the hands of humans. But the first task that God gave to people, Adam and Eve, was to care for and monitor animals. But this disaster will not last long, soon our Creator God Jehovah will destroy all evil from the planet in Armageddon. Then the time of heaven will come, the planet will be ruled by Jesus Christ, with him disease, grief, hunger, wars and death will disappear (Revelation 21: 3,4).
