you are right IF we have a horizontal force acting on the truss. Since we don't, there will be no horizontal reaction AX. Try to do summation of forces in the x direction and see what you get :) Thanks CTS Admin

The Moment to find BC is taken about Joint ( H ) which makes the rotation clockwise therefore negative. as for the moment to find HG, the rotation is about point ( C ) which makes this rotation counter clockwise, therefore positive. remember, we are rotating about two different points here. although the direction of the forces is the same, tho points we are rotating about are different. Hope that answered your question. CTSCIVIL

For the last part, an easier method is to find the angle of the triangle which is tan^-1(4/5) = 38.7 degrees, then go sum of Fx=0 , and solve for HC by using it's X component of cos(38.7) .. you're equation will be../ sum of fx = -75 + 112.5 + cos(38.7)xHC = 0 , and when you solve for HC, you get -48kN, which is 48kN in compression

to be honest, I never thought of it this way. I think if I do it the way you are suggesting, I am feeling that I am switching my assumption somewhere in the solution. I always assume positive moment counterclockwise and tension as positive as well. do it the way you proposed but for some reason I am feeling that clockwise and tension go together and clockwise and compression go together. sorry for not having a clear answer for now. i need to give it some more thoughts I guess.

I always have problems with people claiming that they are they best or among the best. Teaching is a skill that can be developed. Do not claim to be the best. Let your student decide. Do your part of crossing the idea to others and be thankful if 1 out of 10 people appreciates it. CTSCIVIL

For calculating HC we can use (sin/cos) of the angle after we calculate it by (tang) witch equal to 4/5
@CTSCIVIL

yes you can. But the question is, how many numbers after the decimal place will you use? it is always nice to use ALL of them right? However, that is impossible. That is why I use the triangular ratios

Got a quick question though, couldn't we use the equations for equilibrium in x then equilibrium in y to solve for the unknowns in the truss? this is the first time i saw moments being taken more than once, and is the reason being that you would like to not worry about those annoying reaction forces at the joint?
