I'm American and when I say syrup I mean maple syrup. Never knew syrup was a drink.

As a Dutch guy knowing a good amount of English, I'd also think of the mable syrup for pancakes. However, Dutch pancakes are larger in size than American pancakes, and I think the syrup is similar to the mable syrup, but with different contents. Furthermore, syrup is 'stroop' (pronounce it like 'strope'), with which our famous stroopwafels (syrup wafles) are made. In Dutch there is also the word 'siroop' (pronounce it like 'seerope'). It can refer to the stuff like the mable syrup, but it's not commonly called that. When we hear the word 'siroop', we would most likely think of the sweet liquid base for a drink that you need to add water to. When the water is added, we call it 'limonade'.

That syrup thing must definitely be a regional thing, in California if you ask for syrup you expect syrup for pancakes like maple syrup the like the same as the Canadians lol

You can have misunderstandings going from one part of the United States to another. I grew up in Pennsylvania, and called a drink made with ice cream, milk, and a flavoring (e.g. chocolate syrup) a milkshake. The first time I went to Boston, Massachusetts (in 1974) and asked for a milkshake, I got shook milk! I asked what happened to the ice cream, and the waitress said that what I wanted was a frappe. I assume this is related to the frappe setting on a blender. Then I tried to get a frappe in Providence, Rhode Island (a mere 50 miles/ 83 km from Boston), and was told that I wanted a cabinet. I assume this is the local pronunciation of carbonate, although one doesn't put carbonated water into a milkshake. With the homogenization of culture (e.g. McDonald's all over the US), I don't know if regional variations like this are going away.

I remember when I studied in Mexico there were some Canadians who said that it got cold in Canada, and they had to wear a "Tuque". I asked what that was, and they said we call it a "Beanie". She explained to me that a beanie is really that hat with a propeller on top, and that sometimes in in American movies there will be the big tough black guy or whatever, and he'll say, "Let me go get my beanie!" and she pictures him with the little hat with a propeller on top. That visual made me laugh, too.

so my French teacher is Swiss and I go to school in America and she tried to explain ratatouille to the class and she kept saying aubergine and no one knew what she meant so she had to pull up a picture and the whole class said "oohh an eggplant" and she was very confused

hmm, nice cool fun video. But as an American I feel confused by the American in the video. Of course we say someone is attached or taken if they are in a relationship, it would be immediately recognizable. Also I have no idea what type of syrup she's talking about, if someone asked me for syrup I would bring the maple syrup just like the Canadian did. But I don't know I suppose there are quite a few regional variations within all countries. I do live in a city that has a bridge to Canada in it.

In my country we called rose cordial a syrup too. When the first time I read books from US, I thought its weird they eat pancake with syrup. Later I know there is different type of syrup which is maple syrup (they eat pancakes with that right?).

Yeah! The differences can be confusing sometimes, but really interesting! :)

Canadian English and American English are very similar. British English is farther apart. Many British people can't tell the difference between American speakers and Canadian speakers when they are using standard American and Canadian accents. (There are some American and Canadian accents that are more distinct and easier to tell apart.)
