I've learnt this at school but I started using them correctly after reading books and watching movies in English. And i kind of never knew why i use it like that. I tried to translate it from my native language (Armenian) but it got worse beacuse Armenian and English are very different. So i just used them correctly without knowing how. You helped me understand that completely. You explain lessons very good and you really help me with my english. Thanks a lot.

Well, thank you so much for everything. We learn so much . . . ! Please, there is a confusion, and I hope you will explain it to me! I hope it could be helpful for the others too. 1) Have you seen my keys? Present Perfect 2) Did you see my keys? Simple Past. So after my little knowledge, I will answer both like this: 1) Yes, I have seen them. 2) Yes, I did. So Ms. & Mr. Which one is correct and how can we understand the difference between them. Because, I (think) hope that the grammar is correct in both cases. Thank you so much and may our lovely God bless you!
@Oxfordonlineenglish16 жыл бұрын
Good question, Andalouz. Using the preset perfect in this situation means the keys are still lost. Using the past simple asks if at some time in the past they saw the keys. It's one, finished activity in the past and is not connected to the present. Perhaps the keys were found. Hope this is useful for you!

This topic is not easy to explain, but you have your ways of explaning the topic well which is amazing. Although there's something you're not discussing in the video which is this : - Can we use the past continous for a completed action especially with the time expression 'For hours' to emphasize that something continued / lasted for a while ? For example : "I was waiting for you for hours !" Is that possible ? We're taught to use the past simple for completed actions and the past continous for incomplete actions. But is it possible to use the past continous for completed actions ? If so, then the past continous can be used for both completed and incomplete actions This is other grammar confusion for me, Thank you!
@Oxfordonlineenglish12 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Thanks for watching. We're glad you enjoyed the lesson. For the past continuous, we express an activity that was continuous at a certain point in the past, but it is a completed action because it is not still true now. We have a few other lessons which might also be helpful for you: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/talk-about-the-past-in-english, www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/tell-a-story. Hope this is useful for you!

Hi, thanks all the tenses explained in 17 mins, that's great! Although I'm quite confused, because you said "we're usually creating points in time with these tenses" , my question is : why is the word "usually" used together with the present continuous ? As far as I know the word "usually" is linked with the present simple , but why use the word "usually" together with the present continuous in the sentence ? I would like explanations, thank you a lot

In the sentence "• By the end of the day, we’ll have been working without a break for 14 hours" which are the points that this tense connect? now and future or xx hours ago, when the activity started and the future? Thank you so much, I really enjoy all your videos!
@Oxfordonlineenglish14 жыл бұрын
Hi Claudia. We are staying that at the time the day is finished (you can imagine 6pm on Monday) the amount of work we'll be doing is 14 hours with no break (you can imagine starting at 4am on Monday). So another way to think about it, we are talking about a future day (Monday) where we will be continuously working all day from 4am to 6pm with no break. Hope this helps you!

Teacher Martin 1. I went Shopping once a week 2. She was running in the park 3. We had not seen it Commend : the first sentence conveys a habitual action why can't we modify the sentence as I used to go for the shopping once a week. The Second sentence : she was running in the park '.The past continuous park is not experiencing a complete meaning . It could be modified as she was running in the park when i saw her Third Sentence : we hadn't seen it -past simple with the word her should be replaced with word did modified sentence we didn't seen it or we haven't seen it-more corrective I go to work by bus -X I usually go to work by bus (habitual action) we hadn't thought about it -X we haven't thought about it until asked about it(better expression) past perfect sequence : when I had brushed my teeth i had breakfast Note: Earlier action is expressed in the past perfect ;the later action should be in the past simple this is the best way to teach past perfect. she had been feeling much better =this sentence can be modified as -She had been feeling much better after treatment in the hospital.

Glad you enjoy the lessons! Here are a few suggestions for you: 1) '2 years,' not, 'year'. 2) What do you mean by 'I had finished my enter middle School study'? A correct sentence would be something like: 'I had finished middle school before I started to drive'. 3) 'I will learn more English,' not, 'learning'. Hope this helps you!

I have some questions to both of you and expecting to be answered quickly. 1) House has burnt. 2) Shop has opened. 3) Show has started. 4) The document has submitted. Now tell me if the first three sentences are correct which I know are correct why the fourth one is wrong. What is the logic behind this or which rules make the first three sentences correct and make the fourth one wrong. Many other examples are following 1) Room filled with balloons. (correct in past simple.) 2) Room was filling with water. (not correct in past continuous but why?) 3) Glass broke. (correct in past simple.) 4) Glass was breaking. (not correct in past continuous but why?)

When we are narrating about something in past, which tense to be used while talking about the meaning of a phrase - simple present or simple past? For example: Two years ago, Vidya's firm made the mistake of sending her to France. Although she had studied French at school, she soon discovered that she could not remember much. She missed an important meeting because she forgot that "huit heures et demie" in French __________ half past eight in English. Options are: a) means b) meant c) had meant

Ignore me if i'm wrong but i think there are little mistakes on the video. At 10:40 the 3th sentence is "I will have finished all "by" exams by this time next year." May it be "all my exams" instead of "all by exam". What do you mean by "finished by exams"? And i think he also pronounced it as "all my exams" which is logical. And the second one; at 12:46 she pronounced the first sentence as "she's been feeling" even though correct one is "she'd been feeling".
@Oxfordonlineenglish14 жыл бұрын
Hi Leyla. 1) Good catch! Yes, it should be 'all my exams'. 2) She actually did say 'she'd been'. It's a little hard to catch because she pronounced it quickly and linked it to the next word.

The words are used more as an art form to describe the company. So you'll find many companies with incorrect spelling of words, all capital letters, no capital letters, etc. Hope this helps you!
