Thank you for sharing your videos in English - they are absolutely fantastic. My question pertains to the stacked position. My point of view is that the foot has to be underneath the sternum in long glides to have glide and time to develop power. At higher speeds, the foot can be across the midline on the other side to give even more time to develop power. But during accelerations, the foot can be placed at shoulder width because it's less about the rate of force development and more about the speed at the point. My point of view is that you can have a stacked position without having to have your nose in line with the ski - but this argument keeps coming around. I would love to hear your view on the matter. Thanks for commenting on this. Speed and terrain decide where to put down the foot/ski. As you point out, the position depends on your time to create force and forward pulsation. However, I would be careful about crossing the midline since this often leads to an edged ski on the snow, creating too much friction. Further, this often doesn't gain the purpose because if you do not have the balance, you will fast leave the ski and end up on your inner ski. If you angle the ski in the right direction (forward) and follow the ski with the hip and shoulder (90 degrees on the ski), in balance on the ski (sideways, fourth and backwards) and have a plane ski on the snow), you will glide better and gain more speed. Great info. I was able to implement it this past weekend and already noticed a marked improvement in my one skate. I think it would be awesome for you to do an English version of offset. Klæbo believes offset is the most difficult technique to master. Thanks for all this information.

Thank you for these great analyses. I noticed that the tails of the skis cross @4:46, and I guess this is a function of the ski angle. Could you comment on what the angle should be and how it varies with speed and inclination?

Thx for this great studies! One question: where could be the mistake when after kicking the ski tip touches the snow when the foot is streched out and relaxing before getting back together? Maybe the kick is done too much from the toes? Thx Tom

Hei Thomas, and thanks for your question. It is not a preferred technical solution, especially if it creates rotations balance problems and slows down the skier. However, the kick must go through the toe because if you limit the ankle extension, you also reduce the force production in the gluteus and quadriceps muscles. They are linked together in a chain and work together in the skating movement in the feets.

When you say stretch out the foot at the end of the kick (5:44), do you mean point the toes or flex the foot towards the ankle?

Takk! Coach, you said the hanging leg should be extened completely. The arms should be extended similarly right? You push off, let go arms and poles, unload completely, same physics as you explained for legs? I understand that Emil is sking up a hill and doesn't have time to extend completely. Another problem I have, timing of pole push and foot/ski push. Do they start at the same time? It seems like ski push happens over a longer period ( fraction of seconds) of time from this video atleast. Thank you!

Hello, and thanks for your question! You are right. It is more challenging to stretch all out (and might sometimes not be necessary) when the uphill's becomes steeper. Concerning the pole and push-off, it is important to coordinate this. When you are lowering your arms and upper body on the poles, you go down at your knee angle, and when you are pushing whit your arms, you are pushing with your legs simultaneously. However, the arms and legs don't need to be finished at the same time due to different solutions in different terrain (cycle length differs a lot)

You are right and I agree. Everything changes due to terrain and speed. However, the unload are making the technique sustainable and is a curtial part of all excerlent technique

I am a little confused , isn’t that a technic used mainly on the flat by most skiers and going up-hill only by very strong skiers? Is there a better technic to use skiing up-hill if you do not have the strength to glide double polling going up-hill the way you describe on that video?

Hello Marc and thanks for your question! For most of the skiers, the G3 technique is used in flat and slight uphill's, however, the technique is also used in steeper terrain. This is due to several improved components in the skier (stronger and better endurance-trained upper body, better technique), higher speed in the track (better waxing and grinding of the skis, better preparation of the track) and as the skiers put more focus on practising the technique that gives more speed, G3 (V2) will outcompete G2 (V1) also in the uphill sections of the track both in training and competitions.

Can you also please shed some light on a weight transfer between two legs? When we are gliding on the ski should we start move our pelvis and torso slightly to the other side prior to poles push and upper body compression? Or we should concentrate all our body mass on the gliding ski all the time? And only move our torso to the other side during leg push?

My thinking is that elite XC skiers are moving on 1 and 1 ski t the time, and it is the kick that brings you form one side to the other. It is also importaint to move the body from one ski to the other in one pize, in one movment (dont move the hip frist and then upperbody and then the kick). The importaint forward fall is also becomming a smal sideways fall during the compression before the kick, but it is the start of the kick who brings starts to move the body forward upond the next ski .

Then we are landing our poles, starting bending our torso and ankle. And only after that when our ankle is bended enough we starting kick and moving our torso towards new ski? Is my understanding right?

Good question. Great job coach! Modern day skiers when they land their gliding ski, it looks like they jump on to the ski and sort of a football kicking motion by the lower part of the leg when they land. I don't think they are passive with their gliding ski and leg. I think that's what the question is, correct ? This is clearly visible in "hoppskejt" or kicking with the inner ski while taking a turn. Takk!
