In this film, English is just a means to convey the real moral of the story. Indian housewives are more capable and deserving of respect than they are accorded. The daughter is a typical teenager who thinks everything her mom does is uncool. The husband is another typical Indian character that thinks the marriage revolves around him and that his needs are more important than hers. The struggles with English just made this more relatable to the male audience too and that is all they are focussing on in the comments.
@UKpowerunleashed2 жыл бұрын
Yeah exactly. All these colonial slave mentality comments are cringe. My parents certainly didn't put me in an english medium school because they were suffering from slave mentality. They put me there so that I can be well equipped in this competitive world. This movie was more of an ode to Indian housewives who are warriors but are either shamed in the modern society or not given the importance that they deserve.

I understand that there is a colonial influence when it comes to speaking English and looking down on those who can't. The same goes for those who can't speak Hindi too. You shouldn't laugh at someone not speaking Hindi either because we cant have double standards right?
@heisenberg17982 жыл бұрын
If you want to know how English became societal stature in India, and Hindi is frowned upon, you can read about Macaulay's Minutes and Wood's Dispatch... And after independence that policy continued with poor and lower middle class people in India. Independence for uneducated people was another slavery by rich brown people...

Yes but hindi is one of national official language along with English , I don't know why south indian have much hate , may be they are insecure , because I only see them hating others culture and promoting their culture still they say that they are not getting representation , I mean south has only 5 states out of 29 and few union territories ,and after punjabi culture south indian are most represented ,but still hate , specially from Kerela and Tamilnadu. And before I say something I will tell u that iny region hindi is also not first language any older gen can't speak it properly but we don't showed any anti india statement or disrespect other states
@ghazalrehsi59532 жыл бұрын
@@Anmolnegi-yw7hg a lot of things you're saying seem to be stereotyping the south a little. The fact is Hindi is one of the official languages of India. Upto a point even urdu was very common in the northern part of India before the government actively sought to remove it due to the feeling toward muslims.. similar to what's happening now a days too. The hindi movies trying to represent South have been playing on the stereotypes that North Indians have of the south. So of course the south will have a problem with that. And also the fact that south has soooo many amazing actors and actresses but the north knows nothing about them, not even their names.. But if no-one knows SRK or Salman or Aishwarya, that becomes a "how do you not know THIS!!" also in the hall of fame for actors and actresses.. there is little mention of South film and actors.. and NO mention at all of the north east film and music industry. On top of that.. the north is always defending their stance of being ignorant about things. But just trying to learn a few words of the language of the south or listening to music from the north east.. I think that would help in bridging the gap that others feel.. and if the people of the north take the first step in that.. what's wrong in that.? Plus the south DO know hindi.. just not very fluently. Saying 'please' or 'hello' or 'thank you' in another indian language is not very difficult. It's all indian anyway. XD Learning about our own people shouldn't be a thing to resist.
@beautydebnath70822 жыл бұрын
This is one of my favorite films. English is not just a language in India, it's defines your class sadly. Let me give you one common example Whenever a person started losing an argument he or she will start speak in english to suppress the opposite one[ if the person is not good at english] This is how it is 🤷♀️
@ghazalrehsi59532 жыл бұрын
Not all the time though. I generally used to switch to English coz that was easier for me to speak. If I wanted to make some good points.. my brain would automatically work in English since I was way more comfortable in that language. I got alot of hate for not having an argument or debate in hindi or switching midway.. but the truth is in hindi I couldn't express my points very well. I didn't want to make the other person feel uncomfortable talking in hindi..so I would start a conversation that way. But if we're move to more debate type situations I had to shift to English. It's not to win an argument or anything, it's just that I say my points better in English. But people always took it negatively and actively made fun of me saying "yes , very good. Be an english persons daughter. " And "the English left and left you here ". I was very isolated because of that. The problem is people always just jump to conclusions and make statements like that.

No Bollywood actress could have done the role better (including those acting today). She portrayed a typical Indian housewife in a no less beautiful than I could ever expect. And I would be bold enough to opine that, most actresses in Bollywood today can’t even go pass the expressions bit alone, left alone other intricacies/subtleties. I barely watch movies. But I loved and would recommend it to all.

Also she has the ability to captivate almost all the attention so far so that everyone else becomes invisible. That’s how a hero should be as in Aristotle’s Poetics. It should be as if you are as empathetic to the character as if all his/her happiness and sadness become yours too. You smile when she smiles, and you cry when she’s hurt, whatever the situation may be. Her acting is both artistically and emotionally a piece of gem. And I guess it was comeback after pretty much a decade of not acting. (Can’t speak enough)

The reason this movie touched a chord is because it actually shows the reality of many housewives. Many men are missing those finer points because the English point is more relatable to them - but the main point of this is how housewives in India have usually been less educated ones (due to women's education not being prioritized for a long time and now it's changing) Many Women of Shashi's age have been to school till 4th or 7th grade. Then they are kept home and taught home skills. So they get left behind when conversations on English happen, they are considered uncool, naive or incompetent even though they are quite competent and can be savvy and business minded. She learns English but with that her family change their perception of her - they respect her more, not because of English but because she showcases that she can do anything she wants if she puts her mind to it. They assumed that just because she can't speak English she was supposed to be made fun of. That's what many housewives in India go through. Their own families think "You don't know anything". English is just a tool to show this.
