I really like that a lot of the English names were thought of in the same way as the Japanese names were, like ekans “snake” and abo “boa (like the constricter)”. Charmander was another one of my favorites.

A lot of anime from the early 90s that came over from Japan were Americanized. Some examples are Renaming the show’s title Tokyo Mew Mew was renamed to Mew Mew Power Cardcaptor Sakura was renamed to Cardcaptor‘s (episodes in different order, story arcs changed & character Dynamics changed as well) Detective Conan is called case closed (only five seasons were translated into English) As well as majority of any anime that came over all the characters were also renamed

In French we also had translated names. For example, Satoshi was « Sacha » サシア, his friend was Pierre (very common name - actually means Rock/Stone as he is specialized in rock pokemon) , and the girl is Ondine オンヂーン which means Wave in Latin (she has water type Pokémon).

This video was so informative. You two are such a cute couple too. I grew up on the English Pokémon, so it's hard to get into the Japanese names now that I'm older but for someone who is trying to learn the language, it is perfect. My husband and I watch a lot of subbed anime and I've learned so much about why things are named the way they are in other animes from this video (like the main character in Fumetsu no Anata E (To Your Eternity), Fushi, which I now know means Strange. Thank you so much!

Jessie and James are named after the notorious outlaw in the Old West (cowboys lol,) Jessie James. I heard the Japanese names are also a combination of a first and last name but I can't remember whose (other than him being Japanese) That said, those two have engrained the words "Jessie! James!" into my mind along with the entire rest of their mantra ever since I was a kid, so I'm attached to those names in particular out of all of the other ones lol

It's neither Ash or Satoshi, it's Sasha 😏. I really love to know how the name of thing was chosen ! In French the name are : Ash Ketchum/Satoshi > Sasha du Bourg-Palette (Ketchum) (I guess it was more common for French people to heard Sasha than Ash or Satoshi and closer from the sound in "Satoshi" too. They used the english choice for Ketchum but it is rarely told in the anime. Mostly Sasha is called "Sasha du Bourg-Palette" which means Sasha from the Pallet town/Masara Town.) Misty/Kasumi > Ondine (it refers to germanic mythology, Ondines were water nymphs) Brock/ Takoshi > Pierre (Pierre means "Rock" and is a common name in France) Jessie and James/ Musashi to Kojiro > Jessie et James, just like the english version. I think is because it's fluent to heard. Professor Samuel Oak/Dr Yukinari Okido > Professeur Chen (but I really don't know why xD) Gary Oak/ Shigeru > Regis Chen (Same, don't know why) Pikachu > still Pikachu Pidget/Popo > Roucool ("rourou" is the noice make by pidgets in french and "cool" was chosen in the meaning of "chill" because it's an undangerous pokemon unlike his evolutions.) Charmander/Hitokage > Salamèche (Sala comes from Salamandre (Salamander) and "mèche" means "wick" (For canddle) or "Fuss" (for bomb). Fun fact: there is a play on words with the 3 forms of this pokemon because Salamèche is a wick salamander (can be light on), Reptincel (Chamaleon/Rizadom)(rep for reptile and tincel for étincelle (spark)) is the reptile who "can makes sparks" and Dracaufeu (Charizard/Rizadon) (Dra from Dragon, "au" in french can means "to" but in this case it's refer to the expression "Au Feu !!" that we say when a fire start and we need to prevent people. Well "feu" means fire obviously. So it's litteraly means the Fire Dragon) in the joke version means "Help ! There is a Dragon ! Fire is coming !" XD. Because fire is what happen when spark light a wick haha. Translator had fun as he can😅) Squirtle/Zenigame > Carapuce (Cara for "Carapace", the turtle's shell. And "puce" means flea. The translator chose this one because Zeni in japanese refers to a little piece, he wanted to find something which allude to something small but could be cute and in French we call children that we are fond of "ma puce" (mostly for little girls but I already heard it for little boys time to time) (It has the same use as "sweetheart" in English). So Carapuce is a cute little turtle 😊 Bulbasaur/Fushigidane > Bulbizarre (Bulb from Bulbe (kind of seed) and bizarre which means "strange/weird"). So, it's closer of the japanese meaning. Ekans/Abo > Abo just like the original one. "Boa" is known from french children. Vulpix/Rokon > Goupix (Goup is from "Goupil" which was the medieval french term for renard (the actual french term, meaning "fox") and the ix is for six (6). So the translator tried to save the meanning of Rokon) Jigglypuff/Purin > Rondoudou (the translator tried to save the meaning of Purin here too but adapted it with something sweet french children can have known. Roudoudou is an old famous french candy so he turned it on Rondoudou because Rond means "ring/round" in french and Purin is a kind of round sweet dessert. Oddish/Nazonokusa > Mystherb (Here again, the japanese meaning is safe. Myst is for mystérieux (mysterious) and herb for Herbe (grass) Mr. Mime/ Bariyado > Monsieur Mime (the english translation was chosen because Mime artists were well known and loved by french people, so it was easier to associate it with the pokemon) Ditto/Metamon > Metamorphe (Litteral translation) Snorlax/ Kabigon > Ronflex (Closer of the english translation. Ron is from Ronflement (snoring) because it is a pokemon who sleeps everytime haha and flex is from flexible (flexible/adaptable) which was chose because when you tap on his belly, it's bounce and the belly return in its original form.

When I was little I used to watch Pokemon in english, but when I started to watch more anime and came back to watching pokemon again I was watching it only in Japanese language, from Diamond and Pearl series. (Can't find Japanese ver to first 10 seasons -.-") I find few episodes of previous 10 seasons and I realised that the english ver was censored. And the second thing I find out was that original Pokemon is more funny, the original Japanese jokes are totally lost in translation -.-". So for me lot of years there is no Ash, there is only Satoshi, Kasumi, Takeshi, Musashi and Kojiro. (when I was learning hiragana and tried to remember "KO" symbol I accidentally attached it to KOjiro, and now when I'm reading "KO" I always remember Kojiro from Pokemon :D)
