The word “earth” has germanic roots and not semitic ones. Cave has latin origins. Asthma comes from greek and latin. The Arabic “كوب” was adapted from English (or any other indo-europan language) and not the other way around. The rest of the words just sound the same and don’t have the same meaning.

Well! Having conducted a hasty appraisal of my copy of The Wordsworth Dictionary of Foreign Words in English, by John Ayto (1991), I didn't find words such as 'algebra' and 'alchemy', and certainly nothing related to coffee or sugar; except I did find the following two words in English 'derived' from Arabic, namely "inshallah" and "jihad"! That's all! Perhaps the title of the book should have been: A Dictionary of SOME Foreign Words in English? Perhaps it is an indication how the significance and relative cultural importance of words changes with time.

Nice. This applies to the name of some countries too. For example; Gibraltar was originally Jabal Tariq ( the mountain of Tariq ), named after the conquerer Tariq ibn Zyad. But they couldnt pronounce that so they turned it into "Gibraltar". Mozambique is another example, it was named after the Muslim ruler Musa bin Bique. But when the invaders came they couldnt pronounce that, so Musa bin Bique became Mozambique. Just some interesting facts.

Coffee was actually a thing of great debate among early Muslim scholars; reason being that many scholars drank coffee to stay awake at night and do zikr, but then some scholars noted that it could become addictive. Eventually, it was not branded as a haraam intoxicant (as it did not drive the person into a state where he/she had no control of him/herself as does alcohol). A few more words from the Muslim world: yogurt, cheque, algorithm and cipher

When you mentioned America I thought you were going to cover the word California, which has an intriguing etymology and originates from the Arabic word Khalifah! I believe it came through Spanish.

There far more English words in the Arabic language today than there are Arabic words in the English language. And if we look at the Cathedrals built in the "Dark Ages" then they could not have been so dark after all. What a strange perception we have of our world when the words for sugar and coffee are posed as some sort of great invention.

Hello Paul, I've enjoyed your channel. I will say, though, that I think you should know historians more or less agree that the "Dark Ages" never really existed, and that they're the historiographical invention of Enlightenment-era progressive historians like Edward Gibbon who were dissatisfied with the departure in literature from the classical Latin style of the early Roman Empire, which contained more secular histories and poetry, towards the religious writing of Late Antiquity.
