In this course, I discuss varieties of English that are spoken all around the globe. This is the introduction, which presents five goals for this course. Once we are finished, you will be able to
1) identify different World Englishes
2) discuss how English has spread around the world
3) use on-line resources for the study of World Englishes
4) group World Englishes into different categories
5) understand and criticize theoretical models of how new Englishes develop.

So glad I found your channel - I am developing a curriculum proposal for my Master's TESOL program based on the need to recognise students from these countries and understanding their language in order to better meet their needs. Thank you so much.

Great video, Martin! and thanks for bringing up the Malaysian English. It is relatable here in Indonesian, as I often need to be more alert when I’m about to say something in English that includes agreement (as Indonesian doesn’t inflect for subject-verb agreement as an obvious example). Also that final consonant cluster is indeed tricky!

@Martin Hilpert Just a comment about Malaysian English. It is not quite accurate to suggest it is a localised variety of English that accounts for the peculiarities in the recording you use. The situation is complicated and evolving. Firstly, there are broadly speaking three major ethnic cultures (Malay, Chinese and Indian) with their own mother tongues which produces quite distinct effects on the English spoken, in terms of grammar and particularly the accent/pronunciation. Secondly, there is a difference between those who use English habitually, including as a home language vs those who pick up the language only for education or work. There used to be government schools up to pre-university level in the English medium where everything was taught in English. This existed for 2-3 generations before it was discontinued in the 70s. That reached only a section of the population but these people speak English as a first or co-dominant language, albeit with "Malaysian" characteristics, and it has been passed on in some families. This section will speak more or less like Singaporeans today, where English has remained the language of education. In informal contexts, a localized variant with input from local languages now called Singlish or Manglish is used. There are some differences in accents between the ethnic groups but there are also stable characteristics and vocabulary shared in common such that you might consider the informal register a pidgin or creole. A lot of the grammar is not English (e.g. "you want to go or not?" for "do you want to go?') and there will be words unrecognisable to an English speaker. However, the majority in Malaysia today have been educated in Malay and/or Mandarin/Tamil. They learn English only at a second or third language level and use it in limited contexts. The speaker in your recording is distinctly of Malay background and English is not his first language. Even if you found a different ethnic Malay speaker you might not get the same set of peculiarities. If you'd found, say a 60 year old doctor of Indian background you'd get something that will sound very different but it will be distinctly Malaysian/Singaporean.

Hi Martin! Thanks for your wonderful lectures. I just found a typo in your slide: it should be "diphthong" (rather than "dipthong", though both pronunciations are correct). Besides, I have a minor question: as for the distinction between ESL and EFL, can I say that if English is the ONLY official language apart from a country/area's native language (no matter whether it was a colonized country/area in history), then that is an ESL country/area?

What is your own variety of English? I consider myself a speaker of Southern American English that is more educated than typical. Often I find myself fighting between my fun-sounding colloquialisms and the more-standardized features of GenAm.

I had to pause when you gave the Switzerland example for EFL. Can one really get by, at least from postgrad on in academia, and in certain industries like IT or maybe aviation, if they can't speak English? I mean, I'm a native speaker of Turkish which is the native language of some 80mln people, but even if it were a larger international language like Spanish or Portuguese, wouldn't I be basically left out in the cold in the greater, global network of my colleagues and their common creation? At least in IT, as far as my observation as a semi-insider goes, there definitely _are_ social contexts wherein English is dominant or even at certain situations exclusive. Wouldn't there, then, need to be a fourth category---say, EIL: English as an Industrial/Institutional Language---that captures such a situation. I mean, isn't not knowing English today as an academic like not knowing Latin as a medieval or early Renaissance scholar? Great lecture BTW. Thanks a lot!

Sure, there are professions in which English is a must, and in those professions you can expect everyone to be fluent. The schooling system further makes sure that everyone has at least basic knowledge of English. As a tourist, you can come to Switzerland and be sure that English will take you anywhere. This does not mean, however, that there is a "Swiss English", that is, a variety that has its own conventions and norms.

@@MartinHilpert Where do we draw the line between a local variety of English having systematic features that distinguish it, and that same variety becoming conventional? Does one tend to become the other over time, or is an external phenomenon such as colonialism necessary for the transition to happen?
