i study for about 3 years msa arabic by myself it is a very difficult language and i have a feeling that nobody really master it tens of thousands of words super difficult grammar and it is really not clearly defined between classical arabic and between dialects and between media arabic and literature arabic it is like walking in huge field part of it is flat and part it is hilly and so on i feel that it does not have clear borders as formal English for example it is really not standardized but maybe i am mistaken

Steve has been such an inspiration for me along my language learning journey. I started learning Spanish 10 years ago and around that time I discovered his channel and Lingq. I am now an advanced speaker of the language and I owe my success partially to his tips and tricks that I learned from him. Now I am learning my third language (French) and I already feel like learning this language is much easier than what it was like when I first started learning Spanish (grammatically they are very similar which helps make it easier). You really do form habits and learn different tricks along the way that make it easier for you to pick up new languages.

Nice video!! I loved this collab. The one hardship I most struggle with is overanalyzing. Sometimes I got really tired of spending time with english as I can't help but stop reading or watching the stuff and try to break it down (let's say a whole sentence in there) and figure out, word by word, what's going on, it seems like I just can't turn off myself and go with the flow haha. So to me It's really accurated everything steve's has pointed out, as it could not be in any other way. Thanks for this interview!

Interesting interview. I really admire Steve and I got motivated by him. One thing I need to do to improve my English is to let myself be exposed to as much English as possible. I usually focus on vocabulary and grammar and my Academic English too much, it's pulled me far away from practical English and I've eventually got difficulties in just greetings or daily conversations.

nice vid, nice guy! incredible whats he learning after the age of 60! also I love how fresh and sharp he speaks and thinks at the age of 76! this is a dream and the language learning couldve done a great deal toward it. but: 1. all in all youve got to put in the time. so, that doesnt sound fast to me unless e.g. you move to the country and surround yourself in their language all in. otherwise at home working and living life and learning a language, chances are, wont be fast 2. 10:30-10:38, mabye you are a miracle but for everyone else works use it or loose it. of course not completely, there is a muscle memory but you dont get back into it quick after years, thats for sure try to enjoy it, its the most powerful tip

Switching between the mother tongue and a foreign language is actually difficult for me. Hearing works immediately, but speaking is difficult. The muscles in the mouth have to work differently. I always need several sentences for that. And it's frustrating when your brain knows how to pronounce it, but the tongue disagrees.

9:58 That was my issue when I was fixing my RP and preparing for IELTS. I dropped Mandarin completely. I got fluent in just 2 years, but that's because my mother tongue is Cantonese, so I can do the dictionary method of finding similarities and rules between Cantonese phonetic input (inconsistent, but I can find enough patterns) and Mandarin pinyin, then I spent 2 months relearning the speech so I don't sound so old-fashioned. I have to maintain that now, as it is my extended family's mother tongue. However: I can pick up Northern English accents quicker than I can with Northeastern Chinese accents. I still struggle to understand them, let alone maintain the accents long enough. Now, however: Because I studied about wines at university, even when I can't drink, I am picking up French, Spanish, Portuguese and German (reading) pretty much all at once, while really trying to learn Japanese and Korean (speaking).

Chinese dialects have very regular sounds and tones equivalents among all of them, especially between any 2. Dialect words are minority of each dialect, most semi formal words are common northern origin national words others are largely old or reduced usage words, only a few dialect words are unique. Tones among any 2 or more dialects usually have 1 or 2 equivalent tones. Sounds among various have similar several possible regular equivalents in other dialects. Dialect research content like above was 1st published in Mainland China in 1960

Examples----Hanyu Fangyan Gaiyao (Han Language Dialect Summary) and other works by members of Chinese Dialect Society. All these are in Beijing in fairly simple Chinese. There is a multi volume look at all sorts of dialects + maps etc from 1990s? early 2000s? (forgot title, but there are websites on this dialect atlas survey--- but topics for each are NOT on same theme, so no comparisons among all.) Hope that this helps. The above may be in libraries of universities that teach Chinese, or rarely for sale on internet. Hope that these help.

Steve masters not all those 20 languages in C level... of courde he speaks English as an American citizen, and Swedish as his parents' language. He's been in Germany, China, Japan, Hongkong and studied those languages.. he admits that he forgets Rumanian, though Rumanian is one of the 20 languages he has learned. Persian and Arabic are the last 2 languages to learn seriously, but recently he turned to Hindi ....maybe the 21st language that he learned . I'm a 53 year-old Indonesian.. I myself learned English, French, German, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, and Japanese. now I'm learning Sanskrit in YT channels... but only English and German I'm ready to speak anytime. the rest .... ehm .... well, I have to get concentrated first before speaking.. language is a matter of habit and exposure to the language ...
