I love your reaction. This is one of our national games. It's not just a sport, it runs in our blood. It totally amateur. No players are paid. You play for your local club. IE your parish, if you are good enough, your county. It predates all other modern sports, archeology confirms at least 2000 years old. It was a form of training for battle used by ancient high kings and chieftains. In those days some games would go on for days. Now it is a matter of huge pride. You should watch any all Ireland final on the internet.

Hurling, as the Wikipedia entry on it states, is older than the recorded history of Ireland. It's estimated to be at least three thousand years old, with apparent oral history going back as far as 1200 BCE. Who knows how old it really is. It's deeply ingrained in Irish culture and folkore - the Irish mythical hero Cúchulainn is known for his feats in Hurling. The players are all amateurs in that they don't get paid, as you said, they play this for the love of it, to represent their club, town and county. The organisation in charge of the sport, the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association, has clubs in almost every part of the country and children play it from a young age. It is often cited as the lifeblood of the smaller villages dotted around the country. Some counties would be more into Gaelic Football and do better there, such as Kerry. The same is true for Hurling, with Kilkenny and Cork being notably frequent winners throughout the last century.

Helmets, though around since the late 1960s were not mandatory and serious injury's, albeit infrequent, did occur. They became far more common in the 80s though their use was still optional. It wasn't until 2010 that their use became mandatory at all levels. You can't physically tackle a player but you can shoulder charge a player with the ball (or the closest opposing player competing for the ball) I had to laugh when you thought the black and white footage was old. The sport has been played for at least 3,000 years. (Yes, three thousand!)

The sport is reputed to be 3,000 years old but needed some determined men in the 1800s to revive it from a decline. The way it works is that the players are all amateurs (they are teachers, policemen, electricians etc etc) and each play for their town/village team (their club) where they grew up. Each club plays against club teams from within their own county (32 counties in Ireland). A little bit more to it than that but... The 'la crème' players of these club teams get selected to play for their county team, (you play for the county where you grew up) a huge honour (the teams you seen in the video were county teams). The people who represent the county are the brothers, cousins, friends, sons and workmates of the people in the stands. I have a young relative on the Tipperary team. I was also best friends as a child with another player's uncles from both his mother's and father's side in the town where I grew up. Blood man! *N.B* Hurling is a bit like cricket...in that a goodish team from the highest level would wallop to death, the best team from 2 levels below. There is a league competition for the top 12 teams,. 2 groups of 6 of same rank A & B, is started end of winter to a finish in spring. Playoffs and a final decide the league. But in hurling the league, which is started and all finished up beforehand, is only the precursor to the championship. Every county team would swap 10 league titles for 1 championship title. Championship is played in the summer, when the ground is harder and everything happens quicker. The ball travels faster and longer. I won't go into how they whittle it down to 2 teams (a bit complicated from a starting from zero base) except to say that there are semi-finals and then a final. Winner takes all. For example, their was a 3rd round in the league stage (the championship has a league start but a cup finish, it's complicated) of championship match held last weekend in the town of Thurles between Tipperary v Limerick in Semple stadium (the home of Tipperary which holds 44,000) with 37,800 in attendance. Thurles town has a population of 7,940 (look it up) but has this massive stadium and the population of Tipperary county is only 159,000. Limerick's population is only 203,000. That is like 1/9 of these two places were at the game. They took lumps out of each other and it was a fantastic game. Skin and hair flying and it ended in a draw. It's an all action game. If you go down injured and you need the physio??? He can come on and treat you but unless there is blood or concussion, tough shite, the game just carries on around you where you are being treated. Even when a goal is scored, the players only celebrate it for a sec or two because the opposing keeper restarts the game and does so immediately. There is no fluting around, no bullshite. It's just go go go. The greatest atmosphere you will ever experience.

You might like to know that Martin Keown grew up playing Hurling (the Hurley is the name of the bat that is used) before converting to football. Most large towns in England will have a club and some have started to play in the all Ireland as well.

Some of the comments here are brilliant and funny, yes we all played for our school or parish as was said - no monies but pride!! We didn't like helmets as it made it harder to track the ball, now possibly a requirement. I lost track once on the field then noticed a high speed blur in my line of vision, ducked but unfortunately the poor guy behind me got a messy face. Perhaps the game will catch on more now even just as a visually skilful game :)

So mate - a goal (in the net) is worth 3 points, that's the bigger number on the left. The number on the right is the number of points (worth a point you might have guessed). To move the ball you can catch it and carry it in your hand, but only for four steps. After that you need to either get rid of it by hitting the ball with your hurl/hurley (the name of the 'stick'), or by balancing the ball on your hurley (known as 'solo'ing). You can swap it back into your hands only once from the stick, which means you can only handle it once in possession. Very very fast paced sport. You can't throw the ball at all - either to pass or score - you have it hit the ball with an open palm (known as a handpass).

Plenty of hurdling here too, loads of track and field. Being from a fine hurling county like Offaly, the only hurdle we have ever met is Kilkenny, Cork, Galway, Tipp and now Limerick Clare Dublin. Laois too back in the 50's. Ok Lads, this game is the oldest and fastest field game in the world. There are comparisons with Pelote, played in Florida and the Basque region of France and Spain. The game was played to learn the skills used in battle in ancient Ireland but became a sport that has been played for 2000 years. We've so many world class golfers who learned their hand to eye skills playing hurling, Paul McGinley credited his Ryder Cup winning strategy along the values of the GAA, bringing the parish/local ethos into the team club room - empowering all the players and encouraging a community unified team ethos. The modern version of hurling has been played in an amateur organised game for over 140 years. This game is one of 4 Celtic sports that are indigenious to Ireland - Hurling (precursor to ICE HOCKEY fact, hurling played in the winter in Nova Scotia with Camans {sticks curved historically similar to a hockey stick or west of Scotland - Shinty stick (Gaelic Game similar to hurling)} by Irish imigrants that became the sport of Ice Hockey! Gaelic Football, originally the ancient game of 'Caid' ironically viewed by William Webb Ellis (pioneer of the game of rugby) in south Kerry as his father was a British dragoon stationed there in the 19th century. The game of Caid had the ball kicked in the air as part of the game and Webb Ellis brought this to rugby school allowing the game to take on new skills. Garryowen, an Irish rugby team exemplified this skill and gave the name to the rugby game. Also this game influenced AFL in Australia as ex pats who were interned or emigrated to there in the 19th century brought there game along with aspects of rugby and made Australian Rules Football. Also the game of basketball has similarities with Gaelic Football in the hand passing side of the game. Rounders was played in the ancient Tailteann Games, older than Baseball but strikingly similar rules, since there are over 100 million US citizens claiming Irish heritage you could draw conclusions as to how baseball came about from these ex pats - Boston Red Socks having an Irish American heritage and one of the oldest baseball teams! Handball, a game that played with a small rubber ball (smaller than a tennis ball) in an arena not dissimilar to a squash or raquet ball court, this game is very strong in south Leinster and Munster in Ireland and is played on 'Ball Walls' used to enhance skills for hurling players. Look it, we are a very sporting nation. All of the Gaelic sports are played in an amateur capacity under the auspices of an organisation rooted in amateurism, but crucially embraced by a huge number of clubs/teams/parishes all over Ireland that promote these values. The GAA are an organisation that encourage all forms of Celtic culture music, drama, dance open to all and include all persons/creeds in recent years (excluding the troubled years in certain parts of our country). Most Irish children play all sports - soccer/GAA/Rugby/Basketball and the skills they learn have encouraged players to excel in all these sports at a national level. Our soccer team would have had players - Roy Keane, Dennis Irwin, Robbie Keane, Liam Brady, Kevin Moran who all played GAA, you could argue that their physical put them under pressure nature was learned in the physical side of Gaelic games. Our rugby team who were number one in the world (aprox 50,000 registered rugby players in Ireland compared to 2.2 million in England!) have gotten so much talent from the GAA pool of players, learning their fielding and kicking skills from the GAA . Brian O'Driscoll (Gaelic footballer), Paul O'Connell (hurler), Keith Wood (hurler), Ronan O'Gara (Gaelic footballer) to name a few rugby greats. We are a very small country but our sports players have been enriched by so many codes that embrace amateurism and fair play, exemplified in Celtic sports, sermon over - enjoy!

so hurling is our irish sport i loved ur reaction but i’ll answer some of ur questions, the “stick” is called a hurl no you can rugby tackle them, the reason why some of the men don’t have helmets on in some of the clips is because years ago you didn’t have to wear them but now it’s mandatory to wear them yes you have to hit it into the goal if you hit it into the goal it’s worth 3 points and if you hit it over the bar it’s worth 1 point ye it’s very fast paced the county matches are on every sunday for the “sunday game” and a home town depends , i am a 12 year old and i’ve broke so many bones already but i hope these answers helped i guess?

Hi Ry. I found this video after watching your reactions to gaelic football. 7 of my uncle's play this sport. It is 3000 years old. The stick is called a "hurly" and the upright's are actually called post's and we say "over the bar". 1 goal is 3 point's over the bar is 1 point. Helmets are compulsory since 2010. The ball is called a sliotar (sliter) and the players wear shinguards. There are allot of rules. The goal posts are placed 6.5 m (21 ft) apart and are at least 7 m (23 ft) tall

I really enjoyed your reaction, Seriously though, it may surprise you that hurling has existed in Ireland in some form for perhaps 3,000 years, yes 3,000 years! It predates black and white TV quite a lot. There are ancient tales of Irish warriors training for battle by playing this game, but I would imagine in those days the games were even more brutal than they can appear today. Despite appearances, hurling when played well and within the rules set down by the Gaelic Athletic Association, serious injuries are quite rare. The helmets and face shields are compulsory now, though until recently they used to be optional or not used at all.

Yes, each community has it's own hurling team, from these teams the county team is picked by a process of elimination where the most skilled teams win through to county finals and then the best players are picked to representvtheir county. No payment to the players but they become celebrities in their own right and that brings it's own rewards.

you can’t throw it you have to hand pass where you bounce it on your hand and then throw it, you can’t push on the back or grab someone but you can shoulder, a goal is on the left hand side of the score and it is worth three points but only is written as one, and on the right hand side of the score is a point(over the bar and between the posts), you can take 4 steps with the ball without tapping on your hurl or soloing(keeping the ball on the hurl) but you can only catch it twice overall before hitting or passing, helmets must be worn but in older times they were optional

It has evolved quite a bit particularly in the past 100 years. Prior to that it was much closer to Scottish Shinty which is stoll played there and is almost entirely on the Ground. Ice Hockey is a direct decendant but again looks more like Shinty or Hurling pre the last century. Hurling has gone increasingly airborne with the shape of the Hurley evolving to suit

Cannot throw the ball have to strike it from hand ...cannot throw ball into net or over the bar ..cannot pick the ball from the ground ...the stick is a caman ( or hurley) . When you catch the ball you can take 4 steps before you either pass the ball strike it with the hurley or run with it balanced on the end ( bas) of the stick ..cannot handle the ball twice . No offside but you cannot be in the square in front of goal ( if you are attacking player) before the ball ( sliotar) comes in ..

Helmets were made mandatory in the late 00s-there were unfortunately a few people who died due to being hit on the side of the head. The “paddle” is called a hurl. You can solo “carry the ball (called a sliotar pronounced shlitar) as long as you want on your hurl. You can only catch the ball twice before having to play the ball or continue soloing. A goal is worth three points and over the bar is one point-so the score 1-13 is actually the equivalent to 16 points. And yes these guys are amateur.

You don't have to have headgear, but it is advisable to wear it esp playing this game, you can smacked in the head by the hurley which is the stick they are holding in their hands, you can't hit on purpose. You can tackle someone who has the ball, but you can't smack them with the hurley.

Yep. YOU can only palm pass NOT THROW. You realise the sliothar from your hand and pass it with your palm. All native Irish sports are amateur. Croke Park of (HQ) is something like the 3rd biggest stadium in Europe, 80 0000 plus spectators

@@jgg59 I figured by the name you know the history. Id feel weird calling myself Irish but my ancestry includes Sir Robert Talbot. His brother was Richard Talbot, Earl Tyrconnell who commanded the Irish Royal Army at the Battle of the Boyne. Another brother was Peter Talbot, Catholic Archbishop of Dublin who died in an English prison, a victim of the Popish Plot conspiracy. My ancestor, Robert Talbot married Grace Calvert, daughter of the founder of the Catholic Maryland Colony. I hope to see Ireland united but dont exactly have a dog in that fight. My grandfather on the other hand gave more than he could afford to "The Cause". More than anything i hope the violence remains in the past.

Hurling or Hurley was invented hundreds of years ago to keep the young men battle fit between wars , for over 800 years Ireland experienced almost continuous war , generation after generation were raised with the expectation that at sometime in their lives they’d be called to go to war , it’s now one of the most skillful and entertaining sports on the planet , no quarter asked for and none given 😂
