@englishspeaking3603 ай бұрын
Hahaha! 😄 Yes, it's correct to use "scent" in that sentence. "Scent" refers to a pleasant or distinct smell, and it can also be used metaphorically, as in your sentence, to imply that you sense or perceive something positive, like success. So, "I smell the scent of success" is a valid and expressive sentence.

Sir, it's really helpful for learning right ways to describe smells of all kinds of situations. I appreciate it. When you were talking about body odor, something occurred to me. Once, while I was at a supermarket to do grocery shopping, there was a man wearing sleeveless clothes standing next to me. At that time, I wanted to get a product higher than me, and he said he was able to do so. He raised his hand, unfortunately, my head was just under his armpit. Suddenly, a heavy smell burst into my nose, oh my, I seemed to be unconscious. Luckily, I survived. 😂 Oh, by the way, I started to work with a foreigner from the Philippines. Today, I made a mistake. I asked her the absent student's number should be write? As the words came out, I knew my fault immediately. Shame on me. 😅

There is any other word for the bad smell??? Thanks for the excellent explanation 👍 🎉
@englishspeaking3603 ай бұрын
Yes, you can also use stink. Here’s how you can use "stink" both as a noun and as a verb: As a noun: "Stink" refers to a very unpleasant or foul smell. Example: There was a terrible stink coming from the garbage can. It can also be used informally to describe a fuss or controversy. Example: He made a big stink about the unfair treatment. As a verb: "Stink" means to have a bad smell or to smell unpleasant. Example: The kitchen stinks because of the rotten food. It can also be used figuratively to mean something is bad or unsatisfactory. Example: This movie stinks! It’s not worth watching. Both uses are common and context-dependent.

My daughter hates it when I use "a big stink" in conversation😂. The other day I said something like "If they don't remove the late charge, I'm going to make a big stink about it!". I guess it's too evocative for her 🤣🤣🤣

Sir, after such, can we use plural nouns? For example, it is such a good movie, however, I seem rarely see a sentence like they are such good movies.
@englishspeaking3602 ай бұрын
Hello Mandy! Yes, you can use plural nouns after "such." Your example, "They are such good movies," is correct. "Such" can be used to emphasize the quality or degree of something, and it can be followed by both singular and plural nouns depending on the context. For instance: Singular: "It is such a beautiful painting." Plural: "They are such beautiful paintings." The key is to use "a" before a singular noun and omit it with plural nouns.

Thanks for the video. But the word PERFUME. Does it have another meaning? I mean isn't it related to the word SMELL?
@englishspeaking3602 ай бұрын
Yes, "perfume" can also refer to the pleasant smell itself, not just the liquid product. It can describe a natural or pleasing fragrance, like the "perfume of flowers". Here, it’s used to highlight a pleasant scent rather than an artificial fragrance.
@squoctopus22 күн бұрын
"Perfume" also has the definition of dispersing a scent. You can use it as in "The scent of the roses perfumed my office", but you can't say "I was able to perfume the roses as soon as I walked in the door". Instead you would say "I smelled the roses' perfume as soon as I walked in the door."
@mandychiu73192 ай бұрын
Sir, I have gotta go or I gotta go? I saw a sentence was he has gotta go, so how about the subject is I?
@englishspeaking3602 ай бұрын
Hello Mandy! The correct informal expression is "I gotta go." While "gotta" is a contraction of "got to," adding "have" before it is unnecessary and ungrammatical. You could say "I've got to go" in more formal speech, but in casual conversation, "I gotta go" is commonly used.

what about "fragrance"?
@fredylopez24773 ай бұрын
I think it's synonym for "scent" and "aroma" but I think it's a french word and it's not used very often.
@englishspeaking3603 ай бұрын
"Fragrance" is typically used to describe a pleasant or sweet smell, often associated with perfumes, flowers, or luxury products. It's more formal or refined compared to words like "scent" or "smell." As a result, it is not used very often. Examples: Literal use: The fragrance of roses filled the garden. Commercial use: She bought a new fragrance from the perfume shop. It's not commonly used for neutral or unpleasant smells. Instead, it's reserved for pleasant scents.
