Ellipsis is one to add to our vocabulary as we use it in our speech and writing regularly. It is usually used to avoid saying unnecessary words and from 'sounding like a parrot. Speech and writing can sound more natural when using ellipsis, especially when we don't repeat a question in our answer. I try to omit 'that' from that-clauses. However, 'that' can't always be omitted. Cue Jennifer's adjective clauses series. Ellipsis in proverbs: When one door closes... All things that glitter... In for a penny... Plenty more fish... A problem shared... The day is always darkest... I'm starting to stray into cliches now. LOL :>)

Thank you for the support, Hamza. KZbin has a potentially big audience. KZbin allows you to upload long videos and build a community. I can also monetize my videos and build a membership program. I enjoy live streaming on Hallo now because I can invite students on camera. For me, one drawback is having my older videos recommended, but not my newer ones. My older videos have more views. It's harder to get views on my newer lessons. I rely on help from my viewers to recommend my channel and share my videos. :)

Well explained Jennifer. Ellipsis are of great value in spoken English. Recently I came across to a structure similar to tag questions. Example: Mary cooked as a Chef yesterday. Or did she? I haven't seen this kind of sentences before and they don't appear in grammar books. Any chance you makes a video about it?
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
You may be thinking about tag questions and negative questions: 1. Mary cooked yesterday, didn't she? 2. Mary didn't cook yesterday, did she? / Mary didn't cook yesterday. Or did she? (The second is a just a conversational variation.) 3. Mary is a chef, isn't she? 4. Mary isn't a chef, is she?/ Mary isn't a chef. Or is she?
@hintergarten
@hintergarten 4 жыл бұрын
@@Englishwithjennifer Not really. I understand the rules to build Tag questions and the meaning is like saying ...right? On the other hand this other structure is to create doubt or suspense. Example: The Earth is the only planet that has life. Or is it? I found this form kind of weird because doesn't follow the rules of tag questions. Apparently it appears only after positive statements. Is that true?
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that follow-up question can be used to pique interest, but it could also be used to voice doubt. There's some overlap. You'll find the follow-up questions after negative statements, too. By the way, some would argue that "only" creates a negative meaning because it's a restriction, so the use of the affirmative (Or is it?) actually follows the -/+ rules of tag questions. Christopher Columbus didn't discover anything new. Or did he?

Hi, i have a question, i saw in many songs they say a sentence omitting the subject and auxiliary (usually "I have") followed by a verb in the past participle, that is, they said like "been here" instead of "i have been here" or sometimes use only the subject like "I" for example "i seen that" instead of "i have seen that", Can you explain me that pls?
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 2 жыл бұрын
In informal conversation, the subject and verb BE can be dropped if it's understood. - (It's) so boring. - Really? I like the movie. Some shortened phrases have become standard: - (I've) been there, (and I've) done that. As for a sentence like, "I seen that," it's not standard grammar, but some people use it and find it acceptable. I don't recommend that pattern in a professional or academic setting. Use the simple past (I saw that) or include the helping verb (I've seen that).

Good question, but no. "You looking nice" is not standard grammar. I don't recommend this wording. You might hear, "Looking nice!" or "Looking good!" as a compliment.

Yes mam, I heard( looking nice )as a compliment so we can just say (looking nice.) Right? Mam I have also heard a sentence- I hope you okay with it. Here we omit (are).we say( you okay) instead of( you are okay). Is it right or not.

Is it alright if i say ( haven't an extra copy, but Derick has. ) ? Or ( don't have an extra copy, yet Derick does )
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
In American English, we'd use "don't have" rather than "haven't." To shorten the exchange, we use the auxiliary verb DO/DOES/DID. >> Do you have an extra copy? I don't, but Derick does. >>Did you get the copy? I didn't, but Derick did.

JenniferESL Thank you. However you didn't tell me whether the sentences are grammatically right or wrong!?
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
In American English, we don't use "haven't" as the negative of "have." We also use auxiliary verbs to refer back to the main verb (I don't have one but, but he DOES. = He has one.) We can drop the subject in yes-no questions with the subject "you." (You have a copy? = Do you have a copy?) However, we don't usually drop the subject in statement as you did: Don't have a copy, yet Derick does. "Yet" is not used in conversation as much as "but." For all these reasons, your variations don't sound as standard or as natural to my American ears. Hope that helps!

@Englishwithjennifer

No. You need to use the helping verb: does. Similar examples: I didn't buy one, but maybe Derrick did. I won't do that, but maybe Derrick will. I can't help, but maybe Derrick can. I haven't been following the news, but maybe Derrick has. Note: I often post grammar tasks for my YT members. They get written practice tasks two times a week.
