Thank you so much for another great lesson, Jennifer! I have to say I learned a lot. Oh, I also played with the crossword puzzle which was fun. Can you believe words like shamrock, archery, sarcastically were all new to me? I didn't know horseshoes are a symbol of luck. More surprisingly, I've never heard of "break a leg" before. Can't believe it, I would definitely misunderstand it without your explanation. Thank you Jennifer!

Jennifer,which of these sentences is grammatically correct? He had gone missing on March 24 after the weather turned bad. He went missing on March 24 after the weather had turned bad.
@Englishwithjennifer9 жыл бұрын
sagar4080 Hello. Since you have the adverb clause of time with "after," we can use the simple past "went" in the main clause because that event is not the first of two past points. 1st = the weather turned bad 2nd = he went missing He went missing after the weather had turned bad. (You can insert the date if it's important.) He went missing after the weather turned bad. (The past perfect is really unnecessary since "after" makes the time sequence clear. Some would choose to keep the past perfect in that adverb clause of time.)

ฺีBut here in Thailand, crossing fingers mean that you're not going to be consistent with your promise you're making. In many situations, this interpretation can be found in children's behavior, especially when they're forced to make a promise in a group.
@Englishwithjennifer8 жыл бұрын
Yes, but here that's only true if you cross your fingers behind your back. If you cross them openly, it's a sincere wish for good luck. :)

Good word! It's less commonly used in wishes, but you could say something like, "I wish you good fortune!" www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/fortune That sounds rather formal or old-fashioned to my ears, though.
