Your simplicity and authenticity in the way you teach are truly commendable. Your ability to explain complex words and topics in a clear and understandable manner makes learning enjoyable and enriching. I particularly admire the way you incorporate beautiful topics and cultural traits into your lessons, providing us with a deeper understanding of the English language and British culture. Your slang videos are an absolute delight! They not only enhance our vocabulary but also give us a glimpse into the vibrant and diverse world of colloquial British English. Your efforts in presenting students with such wonderful English lessons are truly invaluable and greatly appreciated. Your passion for teaching shines through in every lesson. I feel blessed to have you as my British English teacher. Thank you Katharine❤

I always wonder if talking fast isn't something that comes naturally, if one starts with standard English, be it American or British English, or English in any other English speaking country. I can't imagine myself trying to learn lessons that prescribe, to me, how to speak fast. I figure that I'll just let that happen by itself. I've been amazed by hearing people telling me, sometimes, to slow down, please, whereas English isn't, supposedly, my native language. The first time I heard someone tell me "Slow down, please!" was in my last year of secondary school, when I was reading aloud a text in a school book, something about philosophy, or in a philosophy book, meaning that it wasn't anything as simple as pears and apples (which I decreed, long ago, to be my favorite fruit, apples), and, the text was in French, my personal native language. I explained my speed, to myself, by knowing that I had decided to look at the words ahead, before reading them, and by the fact that phiosophy is a subject that highly interests me. It's as if, to me, it were an exact science with nothing confusing in it. So, I mean, I was reading a text, in a language that I was quite at ease with, and about a subject that ignited my thoughts. That's how I gathered that I was reading too fast for the teacher, who surprised me, by stopping me, since he was known for his ardent way of speech. Now, transfer that to English, and, I'm at a loss for an explanation, when a native English speaker tells me "Slow down, please!", when I speak. That happened to me in Haitian Creole, too. It's not always easy for me to put a lock on excessive speed, when I get caught in it. So, you see, I'll just let my language speed happen by itself. It's a good thing that writing can't be subjected to excessive speed. I guess that that would be called "short hand".

Excellent lecture again Katharine. Fast formal British English is a bit easier than fast accent/dialect English I think. I went to visit a friend of mine in Cork once. At a grocery store an old gentleman approach me and asked me something in a dialect I didn't understand AT all. Later I learned he was asking for help since he was not able to easily reach the top shelf. What an embarrassing moment...☺

I got them all except Number 4. We do use most of these hacks in the States, with variations of course; this is due to the different regional accents. Try using this Scottish hack: Sae wha dae ye hae a fancy fur? It means 'So who do you have a fancy for?'.

Great lesson, tips, and sense of humour, Katherine! Weak forms are arguably the biggest hurdle in getting to grips with connected speech, especially for students whose first language is typically syllable-timed. A practical lesson on English rhythm would be most beneficial in this respect. 🙂

You know, British accent is very popular in China, and your English accent is very nice, and your voice is touching. Your video also shows many unique cultural differences between England and China, as well as popularize many UK culture and interesting traditions. Someone's moving your video from KZbin to Blibli (A Chinese Video Net like KZbin) I don't know if you know this? I suggest you also register an account on Blibli and upload your videos, so that there will be more Chinese English learners watching your videos.
