Awesome lesson, Adam! I teach English to Brazilians, and I appreciate the way you teach. I'm currently teaching the structures "I would like..." and "I will have..." to be used in a restaurant setting, so this lesson will be a good addition to my explanation about the usage of "will" and "would" in the future, after they feel comfortable using those other structures. They'll get there, slowly but surely. 😊 We don't want to overwhelm them, right?😉☺️

Hi Adam. I'm a non native speaker but I'm not sure this video is comprehensive at all. I believe would can be used in factual contexts as well, eg, I would like some tea. I want to sound courteous (and this is what makes the would in this context formal), but I have used would in a factual context. The reason I'm even writing to you now is because I'm an ESL teacher and I have a fairly good understanding of the language, so, I had difficulty delivering the lesson because of some usages of would. In my opinion, even as a non native speaker, this video video needs to cover much ground if it should give a fair understanding of the usage of the word. And I think non natives do have a thorough understanding that where would comes with a past perfect tense, that's an indication of failure - that an undesirable outcome has come to pass. (maybe I'm speaking for myself) But I do know that while I seldom use will, I do strictly use it for certain outcomes. By the way, will can also be used with a conditional clause. Unless you want to tell me that that is grammatically incorrect. Please tell me what you think of these 2; 1. I will go to the bank if I have time 2.I would go to the bank if I had time I would use 1 for both strong and weak possibilities. Are you saying would would be more appropriate in the case of the 2nd possibility? And there I go with my exaggerated usage of "would". Would would be more... Or I should have said would will be more? For me, this context allows me to use both, but because would is a bit more polite, I am going for it!!! I honestly seldom use will in my conversational English, and it's purely because, generally, it's a more courteous form of expressing ideas. Would you like to come watch a movie with over the weekend? This is an invitation, and I am expressing this invitation in this manner to up my chances of my invitation being accepted. In other words, I am making it more certain than will would have been in this particular context. Yes, I'm a non native speaker, but I don't agree with this video completely. By the way, I had a problem delivering this lesson in class in the presence of my employer because while grammar does have rules, SOMETIMES, it makes learning and speaking as a native harder than ignoring them, and I honestly felt that way about my lesson. I was failing to connect with it the same way I'm failing to connect with this video. Which ideas have I expressed wrongly. I would greatly appreciate your response. (again, I want to sound more courteous, and have used would here for that purpose) Enough on that!
