Important note: languages DO get "the" if they have the word "language" after it. For example "Russian" vs "the russian language" or "English" vs "the english language"

I have a question about the presence of "the" in a defining noun phrase. I have Googled a lot of websites about grammar, but none can answer my question, when do we need a "the" in a defining noun phrase? My confusion arises from the exercise in my grammar book, my homework. I see model answers like : (1) THE famous attraction Sydney Opera House is there. (2) ___ Famous chef Joe Cheung will open a restaurant. (3) Lily studies in THE international school East Island School. (4) He works for ____ mobile service provider Orange Co. (5) ___ Head prefect Amy received an award from the teacher. (6) ___ Singer Eason Chan was born in HK. (7) THE late composer Beethoven wrote this song. (8) ___ Famous landmark the Eiffel Tower was my first stop. (9) I saw THE famous London Bridge. (10) I went to THE suburban town Taipo. (11) THE pop song Let It Go is my favourite. (12) A beautiful place Stanley is near us. (13) A young engineer Sam Wong is a hard-working man. ------------------------------------ Even after a lot of searching and thinking, I don't understand... why in 2, 4, 5-7, 8, we don't need "the" in those examples ? Why is "the" needed (in 1, 3, 7, 9, 11-12) ? Why is "a" needed (in 12-13) ?

Wait.. You don't know why "the" is used in conjunction with "of" as an article in nouns? In other Germanic languages such as German, this is also the case. For example: “Die Universität zu Köln (The university of Cologne)”. It's like "The car of Peter". You describe or name a thing that has an affiliation. That's why.

Hello, TeacherI read the following text in a school English book but I think the definite article must not be used with the uncountable noun 'creativity': (last sentence) "Failure is not the end. Rather, it may be the first step to tge world of success. This is proven by the experiences of many geniuses abd inventors. Although failure interefered with their way in the early days of their lives, it didn't discourage them from reaching the top. Effort and creativity make their success stories a mark in the human creativity." Thanks for your guidance. Best regards Antoine Ghannoum

I'm rather surprised no one already pointed this out .. well, at least not in the top comments I'm seeing, lol. however, I did live in Canada and while there, I also always used to say, "the Hudson Bay" .. no one ever corrected me. but that doesn't mean much (English isn't my first language, so what do I know anyways, lol). bygone; my point is, to me it sounds like he's saying, "the Hudson Bay in Canada doesn't take an article." (I rephrased that one, but something along it). or am I just plainly wrong?

I did a very brief research on the Internet and to me it looks like as if, "the Hudson Bay" would take an article, though. that's also what Adam (accidentally, as it seems) said. imma thinking, when you put the, umm, "descriptive word" first, then you don't need an article. just like he mentioned with Mount Fuji or let's say, "Lake Ontario." in those cases, you forego of the article, but since it's not, "Bay Hudson," one still needs the, "the" .. or is it just, "the?" hey, does the article take an article? help, lol

Adam is kinda confirming my gut feeling when he says for instance, "the Mediterranean (Sea)" .. see, there the "descriptor" of the geographical feature in question is positioned at the end .. that's why I'm thinking, that's why the article is needed in that case .. but this then would also be true for my aforementioned, "the Hudson Bay." what you guys thinking .. am I right or right, or what?

It seems to me that the most of English speakers use these rules VERY loosely. I mean, even Adam here said, at 7:15, "so, Lake Baikal in Russia or THE Lake Hudson in Canada - no article", but he just used it. I wouldn't say that he made a mistake, but I do think that native speakers often drop it or put it where it doesn't technically go in order to make a better flow to the sentence. Kind of "the flow of the sentence trumps the strict grammar rules". I also see it on forums and boards often. Does that make sense to the native speakers reading this ?

"English teacher"may also mean nationality - teacher from England.

Hi there, as far as I know , English teacher means you are "native " . That is, English is your mother tongue .. while teacher of English means that you are not native , but you teach English as foreign or second language ..

@@ilhambed1711 I prefer to say Teacher of English. This more accurately determines which subject the teacher teaches.

@@ilhambed1711 that is not correct actually. Because you can say “math teacher” but there is no “native” math teacher. English teacher and teacher of English are equal when talking about the profession.
