Just a native speaker trolling through. Wouldn't it be more accurate to describe the "to" in "about to" as an infinitive marker? That makes the infinitive the object of the preposition "about" (which is fine because infinitives can preform noun functions), and in turn infinitives can have their own objects if necessary. It does take just a second longer to explain, but it helps explain the unifying thought that is "about"-ness in the English language.
