Just a native speaker trolling through. Wouldn't it be more accurate to describe the "to" in "about to" as an infinitive marker? That makes the infinitive the object of the preposition "about" (which is fine because infinitives can preform noun functions), and in turn infinitives can have their own objects if necessary. It does take just a second longer to explain, but it helps explain the unifying thought that is "about"-ness in the English language.

You are a fantastic teacher!! I love you so much. I am a bit confused. It is not about to, it is about whether we can replace about to with an other phrase going to?for example, I am about to leave this country. I am going to leave this country soon. I am going to leave this country in near future. I am going to leave this country right now. Oh one more, I am on the verge of leaving this country. I am on the brink of leaving this country. Could you tell me the best alternative of about pleas?
