I'm a native speaker of English, but I can't speak any other language at all. If you can speak your own language, plus English, no matter how imperfectly, you are way, way ahead of most native English speakers, who speak English only. So don't put yourself down --- you're doing great! If you make a mistake, so what? Just smile and say, "Sorry, my English isn't perfect yet, but I'm working on it."

The Joyful Eye Agreed! I work at a place with loads of foreign students. They all have at least two languages sometimes more. English people tend to have only English. So don't ever be intimidated by English people because we are bad language learners. Also, don't worry about 100% perfect pronunciation. I know students (for example a Russian guy) who speaks with a super heavy accent but his vocabulary range and grammatical complexity is more advanced than the average English speaker. I told him this and he was very pleased!!

but (most of the) native speakers dont give a shit... they re full of arrogance and judging you as 'not being able to speak properly'. this is why i quitted learning english and kicked off this horrible ''linguistic imperialism''.
@franksimmons90925 жыл бұрын
Or, you can say, "sorry, my English is not perfect and neither is yours." Besides, what does the teacher mean by "native speakers"? This question has been bothering me for years, and so far nobody has given me a convincing answer. I have met native speakers who speak English horribly and I think no foreign speaker should be willing to imitate them.

Oh God, when I'm around native English speakers, my brain shuts down and I forgot the entire language and I start to panic! I can understand everything that they are saying but I just can't respond. This guy walked up to me in Tesco the other day, he wanted my help to find coffee but I couldn't really help him even though I knew exactly where he can find what he's looking for. I wanted to tell him to turn right at the end of the aisle we were in and then look for the sign that says "tea" and he can find coffee in that aisle as well. But I forgot the words "aisle", "sign","right" and even "tea" which sounds almost the same in my language as it does in English! So in the end I just pointed to the general direction of the tea/coffee aisle and didn't say a word. Not a single word! I felt so embarrassed! And I was afraid he might come back and ask more questions so I left the store as fast as I could!

wow, not a nice situation to find yourself in. maybe you could try to talk to yourself in your mind in English just before you go into the store to get your subconscious mind to "think" in English. Hi, Jade. Thanks for making this video. From my experience, native English speakers are quite kind and patient when I talk to them. Just like you said, they are not analyzing my language but try to communicate with me. On the contrary, I feel much more nervous when I talk in front of my colleagues who are non-native English speakers because they do judge your accent, word choice or grammar lol
@Hunter73388 жыл бұрын
Wow, I listened to you on this video and thought you were describing exactly what happens to me when I'm in front of native speakers, in my case, I'm believe I'm too hard on myself most of the time and that makes me try to be perfect, which leads to me anxiety and feeling of paranoia that I'm forgetting the language or some absurd thing like that. I think the root of the problem is that I'm insecure and I tend to idealise native speakers to the point of thinking, like you said, they are way above my level. Thank you for your videos. Keep up the good work.

When I speak with one native speaker everything is fine. My accent is quite good, usually everybody understands what I am talking about, if something isn't clear for me I just ask. The problem is when I'm among few native speakers. I can't understand anything then. They speak to fast, use some slang expressions, to many phrasal verbs etc. I thing most of them are aware that they have to speak different way when they talk to somebody who is not an English speaker. When they are in a group they just forget it. I don't judge them, that's just the way it is, but in that kind of situations I lose my confidence.

I understand your struggle. I have native level fluency in English, however it’s not my first language. It’s my 3rd language, albeit the one I’ve mastered most. I make it a point to never use slang in my speech and try to keep the language as standard as possible. People don’t understand how hard it is for non natives to keep up and it’s just basic politeness and consideration to slow it down around them.
@ignaciorigon19098 жыл бұрын
This actually happened to me. I once met a Welsh guy at a hostel and he started speaking with me in a super fast, slangish native english, and I was absolutely lost for the first hour or so. Then I got used to it and could in some way match him. But I do usually get this feeling of nervousness with native speakers. Jade could you do a video explaining some words to use as synonyms or words that are more complex and show a better knowledge of the language, so as not to be always coming down to simple short quick words? As to make our speech sound more complete and "full", with longer and stronger words, rather than simple primary school words. Words that are used by native english speakers and that portray a cultured way of speech. Thank you! Great as usual!

Thanks a lot for the advices, teacher Jade. Though I´m not nervous anymore to do it, I remember I really was, which reminds me of my first time. I was eighteen and worked as a toll booth agent when this car made a wrong turn and ended up on a lane for special vehicles. I was asked to go talk to the driver. The more I was approaching the car, the more nervous I was getting. They were American and looked more nervous than me because they were lost, which made me take a deep breath and ask them to speak slowly (they spoke too fast!). It was such an amazing experience, because as soon as they knew that someone there spoke their language, they were all okay and calm. Then I knew where they were headed to and gave them directions. It was an unforgettable experience! I love, love, love English ;)

Thanks Jade for this video. It's a real step to pass when you learn a foreign language that talking with native-speakers. And I think that, because english is so present all around the world, it's even more stressing to speak to en English native-speaker. If I could give a little tip, as a not English native-speaker myself who had to pass this step, it's to keep in mind that you are not and will never be a native-speaker. So, somewhere, trying to sound like a native-speaker is a lost cause. Instead, it could be better to introduce yourself as a foreigner, trying to speak this wonderful foreign language that you're currently learning. I personnaly experienced this : when you're honest, people are usually willing to help you. So, not try to hide your accent, ask for help if you need and go ahead : try. I'd even say that some foreign accents are really classy. For example, I'm a French native-speaker myself and, a lot of times, I met English people who were like "oh my god, French accent is so classy" (while I was thinking : "oh my go, I adore your british / irish / scottish accent"). So, be proud of who you are, where you're from and of your birth language.

I used to share a house with two Polish lesbians. One of them wanted me to correct her on ANY mistake that she made in English communication. The problem with that is that although her English was very good, it wasn't fluent (as if that's possible anyway) and she was making some sort of mistake every minute or so. It might be a grammar mistake, or a pronunciation, incorrect use of slang, sentence construction, or all sorts of things. So, I just used to correct her on the really important stuff. The trouble with that is that if I didn't correct her on something, then she'd assume that she must have said it correctly. She once told me that she'd told her male boss that she wanted to have it off as much as possible. She thought that she was referring to days off work and holiday time. Her native speaking English boss thought something very different!! I realised that the only way to correct her on absolutely everything was to be with her 24/7. Naturally, that wasn't possible. It was an awkward situation, and alas, there's no answer.

So I've felt if I ask too many times, they'll be bored and tired for answering too much. I also feel it would be easier when taking with non-native speakers because they often use sth more simple like me. People that are not used to speak, fells that native speakers are focusing in mistakes but when your are a native in any language, of course you will notice any change in pronunciation or dialects haha strangers trying brazilian portuguese are so fun hahahaha greetings from south america ✌✌✌

I used to have this issue, years ago, I founded harder to understand natives then other foreigners and felt a bit intimidated even because I've always been quite articulate in Italian and used my speaking skills as a business card, therefore it was difficult to speak English with natives for fear of losing one of my "strongest points". It takes humility: knowing that, as good as you can get, it'll never be enough and cope with that. Let's just go on improving because English is such a universal language that will come handy even if one doesn't travel at all.

Hello everybody. I have a nice tip for you while learning English. Last week an American girl told me that the most important thing during speaking English is to be understood by people.... It is not possible, or very difficult, to speak English like native speaker when you are not native speaker. Learner will never speak Polish, German or French like you do if it is your native language. Best regards for all of you :)

I had a fun interaction with a younger woman some 20 years ago. We met when we were both at the same boarding school (for young adults). Both of us are native Swedes, and the school was in Sweden, but she liked showing off her skill in English, because she had spent a year as an au-pair in London. I can't say anything other than that she was good at English, even very good. But one day when we were talking she corrected my Swedish grammar. I saw nothing wrong with this, since I had actually made a mistake. However, I pointed out to her that she may correct my Swedish grammar, but I will correct her English grammar. And a few days later, I had the chance: she said something along the lines of "... he am...". For a native Swede, this is a very simple mistake to make, since all persons take the same form of the verb (ie I am, you am, he/she/it am, we am, you am, they am and similar for any verb and tense). But sine I noticed it and just days before had claimed that I would correct her English grammar, I had to point it out to her, and we both had a good laugh. Well... I had, she was a bit upset at herself for making such a simple mistake when talking to me. She found out minutes later that although I am a Swede, my primary education was at a school with only British teachers, and all education was in English...

This all applies to anyone learning a foreign language. I'm currently learning a foreign (Brazilian portuguese) language and the struggle is real.

RandomPersonette I am Brazilian, may I ask you why did you choose PT-BR as your second (or third, etc) language?

Omg!!! I'm learning Brazilian Portuguese and the struggle is very real. Sometimes I feel like throwing in the towel and stick to my native language, English. But I do have one friend who speaks Brazilian Portuguese and another friend who speaks European Portuguese and they correct me when I'm wrong but I also feel like an idiot when I speak it.

Thanks, Jade, for this video! Speaking to and understanding a native speaker of English really comes down to your attitude to your mistakes, which you'd rather not make in front of them. But it's not that challenging compared to English spoken by your, let's say, fellow citizens. The thing is, it is sometimes impossible to understand what the say because of their accent. I met a group a Chinese guys on my way to the office the other day... They were looking for, as it turned out, a cash point. I asked them to repeat a question 5 times, still I couldn't hear English in their response. I was about to ask them to write the question down on a piece of paper when it dawned on me that I definitely heard the word 'money'. I felt so let down and embarrassed. Later, I made up for that disappointment by speaking to my British teachers and a random American visitor who got lost in the city center...

Unfortnately i don't have any native English speakers to talk to. i am in Brazil. i think i will still learning a language forever. i will never think that i already learn English. It is not just non native speaker that loose confidence when talk with native people, i mean, i had a teacher of English at school who would loose his confidence when i was at class, because i would know much more than he. It is very funny this kinda thing. i never loose my confidence when i speak English with Brazilian people for more that they know the language. although i never have any confidence to talk with native English people, i am sure about this. thanks for this wonderful video!

Douglas Leandro oh, yes! that is great! I have a indian friend who call me sometimes and we talk each other for a long time, but it is difficult for me. He says that is easy to understand me, but for me is pretty hard to understand him. His indian accent is tough to get!!!!

Try omegle friend, it is great to talk to natives and a lotta fun. You will build confidence. Besides, what is the worst that can happen, they are behind a screen far far away. I am from colombia and this has helped me a great deal. However, you will happen to stumble over some men jerking their parts; just dont mind those, there are nice people in omegle too
