Hi Ronnie! I lived in USA for 20 years, but I am a grandmother, and I never go to school to learn proper English, I accidently found your video on you Tube, a week ago. I'm a French speaker, and pronouncing the "r" is also difficult. At the beginning, I couldn't even notice that my "r" was different, even when my friend would tell me that. But I can't pronounce the word "roast" correctly, I need to repeat myself, or follow it by "standoff" so that people will understand that I was saying roast.

when you say W, point your tongue at the roof of your mouth (but don't touch the roof of your mouth!). This should help!
@missmarpleiam8 жыл бұрын
+emjay de infinite blaze It's all in the lips. With /w/, the lips are rounded and tight, like you're about to kiss someone. However, with /r/, the lips are much more open and rounded. When you say /r/, you can see inside your mouth a little. With /w/, you cannot.

My native advice would be to practice the words "rarely" and "Larry". They help expose not only the "R" at the front of the mouth but the "R" at the back. Also "rerun", "leer", "core", "lore", "porous" "portrait", "Forrest fire". "R" can be "very" throaty, like in the word "very". It's (r)eally only p(r)onounced when p(r)esent in the first few consonants. But in words like "first" the "R" is all throat. And the "R" in "throat" is pronounced like the "R" in "wrote", though it is a leading consonant is not p(r)onounced so.

As a native English speaker who has been self-studying Japanese (日本語) for about 2.5 years and recently started some Korean (한국어) and Simplified Chinese (汉语) as well, I must say that this is pretty impressive. I wouldn't have thought of this method since pronouncing all English sounds obviously comes quite naturally to me, but I think it could definitely work as a technique for CJK speakers. And yes, the characters you used for the 'u' (like the 'oo' of 'zoo' in English) are correct. う and ㅜ make nearly the identical vowel sound (although for the Korean one to be a proper character it should be 우). And 吴 is a bit different, but quite close (the 'w' before the 'ú' is extremely soft); 唔 would also work.

It's funny because in the part of England I'm from we don't pronounce r's at the end of a word if it ends in "er". We don't even say the "e". We change both into an "a". like the German "a", flat. ruler would be roola. with a short flat A at the end

Chinese actually has an "R" sound. in Zhuyin it is written ㄖ and pronounced "rì". Korean has an R phoneme as well written ᄅ. Korean doesn't have tones so it is easier. I don't know about japanese, but Japanese phonetics are quite strong, so it wouldn't surprise me if it has as well. hope these help you. Problem about using the "u" is the position of the tongue. From a U to an R there is quite a way.

in other words, I could have never guessed that there was a hidden "U" in the phonetics of the letter "R", so that made it more difficult to find the right vocal movement to achieve the R sound more naturally & genuinely, especially when it was in the middle or end of the word.
@davidkrcil93265 жыл бұрын
I am from a country with basically the opposite problem. We have "r" and it is the full vibrant "r" so it is kinda hard to guess how much "lax" the english "r" should be as we are used to getting our tongue really close to the alveolar ridge and making the air vibrate.

Hi professor, thank you so much 🥰💞 I have a single question ; I am a native Arabic speaker, in my native language there are two types of rhotic sounds ; hard one and soft’s :- The hard one is like the spanish at the beginning of a word such as (Risa, Rojo), its symbol is [r], but this is not important for the american (R,r), the important type is the soft, and I can make it when I am approached my tongue tip towards the post-alveolar point with no contact between the active articulator (tongue tip) and the passive one (post-alveolar) and in American is so similar but only the tongue tip is approached the alveolar ridge and this technique is hard for me because when I pronounce, it makes no sound as the American accent people, so this video is facilitated the pronunciation of this sound for me ; My question is:- When I merge :- w + ɯ (Japanese) + soft (R,r) in my native language Can make the (R, r) sound, or I do not need the soft (R, r), only w + ɯ?
